Popcafe is located on a square called Santo Spirito. We had read in Time Out that this was quite a cool piazza where the young and arty frequent and that it gives you an opportunity to escape from the tourists as it is lesser known.
So we decided to go for a drink in the mid afternoon sun. The square was pretty calm and peaceful and there was a lady at the end of it singing some jazz style music which was pretty pleasant.
I had a glass of prosecco and Adam had a beer. My prosecco was ?5 which I thought was reasonable.
There were only a few groups of people in the bar. Three english art students studying in Florence, the owner and his friends and an artist from Canada who had a base in Florence.
We got chatting to the man who recommended that we came back in the evening. This was because it was a Thursday and as such Florence night. As the weekends are for tourists, Thursday is for the people of Florence. And, apparently all the bars serve aperitivo which is free snacks with whatever drink you order. He told us that the different bars in the square served different styles of food from rustic italian pasta and risotto to canapes and breads.
Apparently Popcafe did more vegetarian style snacks. And that basically you could come down, have a few drinks and eat for free! Sounded fantastic to us.
Would have been five star but there were quite a few flies which we hadn't really encountered elsewhere in Florence. And there was also this mental woman standing in the middle of the square drinking beer and screaming profanities at everyone! We were told she came to the square the same time every day! Added to the boho atmosphere I suppose!
