5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2011

I would sincerely recommend take into consideration this small, but extremely nice hotel. It is located closely to the Central Station. It really took me 2 minutes to find it after the train.
Starting with neatly-furnished rooms, attractive rates, free Wi-Fi access, perfect location and finishing with very welcoming, helpful staff, it seems to be a wise choice when enjoying Florence. The owner is a very elegant, always smiling, really caring about her guests lady - Ms. Patrizia.

And thank you, Patrizia, for your hospitality and wisdom;)
I will return)
BR,
Ellen

The hotel is in such a great location, couple of minutes walk from the main train/ bus station, the staff are simply wonderful and super friendly, you would adore Patricia, she speaks English the best, and such a helpful wonderful person, price is not expensive at all, and very clean room, very stable and fast internet connection ( free of charge), all in all, this should be your destination hotel !

Room Tip: Ask for rooms 1 or 2, closest to the wireless !

The location is just 10 mins walk from the main train station. It was perfect for us as we arrived by train. It is a small hotel without elevator and therefore we had to drag the luggage all the way up. It is pretty normal in B&Bs and small hotels in Italy anyway. Patricia, as many others mentioned, was very friendly in giving us tips on where to go. The size of the room was unexpectedly spacious. The small TV was installed quite high up (under their tall celing) and we almost missed finding it. The bathroom towels they provided are quite different - 100% cotton towel that are similar to our tea towels. Interesting. However they are very clean and new... like their bedsheets.

The breakfast was simple: a great cappuccino, toasted bun with jam; yogurt and a package of store-bought cake.

The only issue for us was about the noise. We could hear people coming in and going out; opening and shutting their doors. Their portable AC unit was strong however was also very noisy too.

Overall our stay at the hotel Hermes was a good one. It is across the street from the main train station and within walking distance of all the main things to see in Florence. The rooms was quite basic. Our room was on the street and therefore was very noisy with the window open which was needed as it was quite hot otherwise. The hosts were awesome, making great suggestions of things to see and places to eat (all without commercial bias). The prices were very affordable

Patricia, the owner, as others have said is absolutely wonderful. Even before we went to stay there, she offered lots of advice on sightseeing options and made reservations for us to the main attractions (saving us waiting in huge queues). When we arrived, she gave suggestions for different restaurants to try (including a fantastic pizza place) and where to go to pick up provisions for simple picnic lunches (to save some money) and other essentials (a close by small supermarket).

Breakfast, although simple, was freshly toasted bread and made-to-order coffee/tea/hot chocolate.

Although basic, the room we stayed in was clean and had an attached bathroom, which although small, did the job. A perfect base to go exploring Florence, very easily achieved on foot. Great place to stay, made absolutely fantastic by Patricia.

This hotel is next to the railway station and close to all the wonderful stuff in Florence, which is within walking distance. The road it is located on is a busy thoroughfare with a lot of (boisterous) pedestrian traffic at night and a tram service. The building itself does not have any special soundproofing and in any case, there's no air-con so in very hot weather you need to have the window open in summer. The street noise does die down by about 1am. The room I stayed in was by the reception and in fact it was noise from the early-rising guests having breakfast and talking loudly at reception that woke me up rather than street noise.

On the plus side, the staff that run this place are very co-operative and friendly. The breakfast is very good and the communal bathroom was fine. I take issue with other people's accounts of its cleanliness; I found it to be quite clean enough.

If you are on a tour of Italy and are only in Florence for a couple of days - and on a tight budget, this is a good place to consider given the high demand and general high price of other conveniently-located places. The location makes it all worth while. If you arrive with the expectation that you are staying in a lively area and make allowances for that (and factor in a bit of extra rest after you move on) you will get the best from this place, but if you want quiet, you will have to go to a more expensive place, or stay out of town.

We spent two nights at Hotel Hermes. I would recommend it to others for a few important reasons: the excellent personal service, the morning cappuccinos, and the great location. Florence is very walkable from this hotel, and staying here avoids hauling luggage through the streets of Florence. There's a little bit of street noise in Florence (true everywhere), but just turn on the AC to "fan" and it's completely fine. It didn't have all the elements of American hotels -- but that's not why we go to Italy! This place has great Florentine character.

This hotel is perfect for those looking to explore Florence -- Patricia is truly amazing and is so helpful with planning side trips and recommending unique things to do in the city. We had a private bathroom -- I see other negative reviews about bathrooms, but this is how traditional Italian bathrooms are (none are big, and many don't have the ledges/tubs that Americans are used to). The hotel is staffed 24/7 -- I don't think Florence is a dangerous place, but it's definitely comforting to know someone is always around.

If you're looking for a great Italian experience, I highly recommend this place!
