“Great Food and Wine in a historic 14C Mansion”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

Cantinetta Antinori is a small boutique restaurant located on the ground and 1st floors of the Antinori Mansion in the historic center of Florence. The architecture is a great example of the mid-14C. A bulk of the seating is on the ground floor has a variety of tables and a dark wood bar. Upstairs is a small balcony seating possibly 20 people. Service is professional, friendly and punctual.

For wine, think about every wine from every Antinori estate worldwide. These can be ordered by the glass or by the bottle. We enjoyed one.

The food emphasized Tuscan dishes. We started with two primo piatto (carpaccio and pici pasta). The carpaccio had pistachios and combined with the beef had a wonderful taste.

For secondo piatto, we shared the Controfilletto di Bue Toscano alla Griglia con Patate Arrosto (Tuscan Entrecôte of beef from the grill with roast potatoes) and a local pork special. Both were very tasty and ample.

We finished with two desserts: classical Tiramisu and Castagnaccio (chestnut flour cake with ricotta cheese). My wife is still waxing poetic about the castagnaccio. It was wonderful.

Photos, though not being tasty, are attached to this review so the visual appeal of each of these dishes is realized.

This was our first time here and it was a wonderful experience. We will go back and look forward to it.

“Nice wine, ok food but service was lacking!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

We ate here after it was recommended by friends who live outside Lucca. The interior is nothing exciting, one could even say boring, add to that a waiter who wasn't the least bit interested in his job and you end up with an average experience. The wine list is good, as you would expect from Antinori. The pasta dishes were lovely (tuscan ragu and fusilli with broccoli) but each of our main courses left something to be desired. Sometimes an average meal can be saved by dessert - no such luck. Zuppa Cantinetta (Cantinetta Trifle) was tiramisu with some red dye on the bottom of the sponge. The chestnut torte was horrible. It tasted like someone forgot to add the sugar and if it was supposed to have no sugar and be a savoury course like cheese then it should be listed as such. I kept trying it to figure out what it was supposed to be and in one of the last bites I could manage, I got a hit of rosemary which seemed to pull it together - too little too late.

Our biggest problem was the waiter. He seemed like he couldn't be bothered with any of it. Unacceptable from someone making a living from customer service!

I wouldn't waste my time here, there more interesting places to eat in Florence.

“Great Wine, Not So Great Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

Without any exception the wine is what one would expect from house of Antinori. The wine was first rate with each glass poured. After a number of glasses the bar tender gave us some cheese and crusty bread. Very nice. The food on the other hand was not up to par with the wine. Skip the food and go for the wine. There are other great restaurants at affordable prices.

“Great wine as you'd expect”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

Friends hosted us for a dinner here and we loved it. Location is in a palazzo which that alone makes it special. The restaurant was buzzy without being too much of a scene. Wait staff was attentive and helpful. You have the opportunity to try some incredible wines that are difficult/impossible to get in the US which was fun. The food was also fantastic. I would go back.

“Horrible Experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

This was our second visit to Cantinetta Antinori, and our expectations were high, at best. Also, we just had the great pleasure of dining at Cantinetta Antinori in Zurich, and were hoping the truffle menu would be available, however, it was not. The ambience seems to have changed, from brighter lighting to being extremeley rushed through our meal. Also, we were seated upstairs, which is not as cozy. However, the menu was the most disappointing aspect of the meal. We were hard pressed to find something interesting. The majority of men around us were having the bistecca (steak), however, we didn't want that. My husband chose the pasta with ragut, which was okay, but my pork and potatoes, which was brought to my table about two minutes after we placed our order, was bland looking on the plate, dry, overcooked and absolutely horrible. From the moment we walked in, we almost wished we had decided to leave, however, we had ordered a bottle of wine, so decided to stay. We were very disappointed and will never dine there again. However, we'd return to the restaurant in Zurich in a heartbeat!
