“The best trip ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

16 of us stayed at Riva Lofts in Florence and it was the best. We had the entire place to ourselves for 7 wonderful days. It was everything I imagined it to be and more. It was one of the best trips we've ever taken and it had a lot to do with the great staff, wonderful service, chic rooms, great location. It was about as perfect as it can get. Of all the trips we've taken, we missed being there the most weeks after we've come home. We highly recommend it to any group thinking about going to Italy and making Florence the home base which we did.

My daughter and I recently had the pleasure of staying at Riva Lofts in Florence and can honestly say it was one of the highlights of our trip to Italy. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcome and the architecture and design of the hotel was gorgeous in a beautiful garden setting by the river. Alice and her staff were so helpful and engaging answering every question with their warmth and honesty. Eventhough it is a short walk to the centre we appreciated it after all the pasta and gelato!! We will be back for sure!!! Highly recommended.

Riva Lofts has bucket-loads of designer chic and it's a real oasis away from the frantic tourism of Florence. Rooms ('studios') are relatively expensive and there's sometimes a feeling of design over function. We stayed in #9, which looked like an attractive proposition as it's split-level and has an entrance from the garden. Although the upstairs sleeping area was excellent and the bed itself very comfortable, the small sitting area on the same level was barely adequate, and to get to the bathroom one had to go down rather slippery half-open stairs, which were hazardous at any time of the day but particularly in the middle of the night. The kitchenette sounded good on paper, but it was really a waste of space in practice. The bathroom had a shower but no bath and suffered from poor lighting and a toilet with an over-enthusiastic flush.

The best part of the hotel in terms of design is the sitting/breakfast room, which was seriously impressive with its vaulted ceiling, decor and sumptuous furnishings. In fact, just the sort of space that we hanker after for our 'home in the country'. An honesty bar is provided although there was quite a mark-up on wines, with the cheapest bottle at 19 euro. Each room also has a minbar but with the usual hotel mark-up. Soft drinks and water are free, though. A jar of biscotti was also provided and this was topped up daily. WiFi is free and worked well in our room.

Breakfasts are of the Italian type, so there's an emphasis on pastries and cake. But there were also cereals, freshly-squeezed orange juice, breads, yoghurt, jams and boiled eggs, so most tastes are covered. It was certainly adequate for us and we didn't find a lack of variety.

The outside space is also excellent, with a long but narrow pool, a decked area and plenty of space for sunbathing. Just beyond the Riva Lofts grounds, there's a park and the river running alongside. If you're into running, you'll find this ideal. Across the bridge, there's another extensive stretch of greenery, so the overall impression is quite unlike being in a city.

Riva Lofts has three parking spaces out front and there's an apparently un-policed car park just up the road. If you're not travelling on from Florence then there's probably little to be gained from hiring a car. Driving in and around Florence is also pretty tricky on account of the quality of driving in general and very confusing signposting. Bikes are provided for guests but we didn't fancy our chances on them!

Of all the excellent staff at Riva Lofts, Carlotta was particularly helpful and took great pains to reserve us tables in restaurants. Walking into the centre takes about 20 minutes and there's also the tram which takes you to the central station for just one euro and is both efficient and quick.

It's worth getting a Firenze Card (50 euro) which provides 72 hours of access to all the museums and galleries plus free transport on the tram. Although this worked to some extent to bypass queues at the Uffizi Gallery, it carried no weight at the Galleria Accademia where Michelangelo's 'David' is to be found, and we were advised to return in the evening - we didn't.

Of the restaurants we tried, we thought Brac and Vivanda were the best, but being mainly vegetarian, we're obviously biased. We also had really excellent pizzas at the pub-like Punch & Judy Taverna, which is right near the Paulo Uccello (you'll find his work in the Uffizi) tram station, but you won't find Punch & Judy on TripAdvisor!

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our week in Firenze and Riva Lofts was an excellent base.

My partner and I stayed for 3 nights and just loved the Riva Lofts. We will absolutely stay there the next time we're in Florence and will recommnend it to all of our friends.

Don't be concerned about the location. True - its not in the center of town, but that's one of the best things about it! The tram stop is literally a 5 minute walk (maybe 4) and the tram runs from 6am to midnight - we never waited more than 6 minutes for a train. Once on the tram, you're in the center of town in 10 minutes, where you can then walk to everything. We never took a taxi the entire time we were in Florence - day or night.

The property is beautiful, very peaceful and calm which was perfect after having just spent time in the center of Rome. The rooms are large and interesting and have all of the amenities you want or need. The "living room" was a great place to relax and the breakfast service is great - coffee, tea, juice, yoghurt, pastries, hard-cooked eggs, bread, etc. It was so nice not to have to find a place for breakfast every morning - great way to start the day.

The staff was incredible - they were so nice and welcoming and had plenty of recommendations for restaurants and sights to see. We took their recommendations for lunch and dinner most days and each time, they were excellent.

This place is a great find - I'm just worried that the word will get out and we won't be able to get a room next time we're in Florence!

A short cycle or tram ride from the centre of bustling Florence. This place feels like a calm oasis. We had two interconnecting suites for 5 of us and the children were made very welcome. The decoration is comfortable, thoughtful and chic and a real contrast to renaissance Florence. The staff is extremely helpful and friendly. There is no restaurant but a wonderful morning room with freshly laid out breakfast where you can help yourself to drinks throughout the day via an honesty bar. There is a lovely pool and garden. The staff provided excellent suggestions (and made the bookings) for dining.

We'd flown into Pisa and taken the train to Florence. The tram is 3 stops away or a 10 minute taxi ride. Excellent....we're definitely be back and good value for money.

We stayed for three nights at the Riva Lofts at the start of our honeymoon and from the word go we felt really welcomed. The staff were really friendly and helpful at all times. They recommended a range of great places to eat and visit in and around Florence. We liked how the Riva team had thought of the nice little touches such as the free flip flops, the fruit bowel, the free soft drinks in the room, the bikes which you could borrow for free for the day to cycle around the city. The garden was lovely which had a few funky sculptures in it and a nice clean pool. Sadly the weather was not that great during our stay so we were unable to go for a swim. A really nice stay - thank you!

As a rule we never travel during high season, so this recent trip was a big exception. I was fortunate to be invited to stay at Riva Lofts at the end of a very busy week in and around Florence. Although the weather was unseasonably hot, this place was cool from the get go. Serene and artful grounds and rooms were a refreshing alternative to the too-often historically decorated more traditional accomodations. While not in the center of tourist central, it is an easy tram ride into town. I love traveling and feelng like I am a bit closer to an authentic experience, and simply walking in the neighborhood accomplishes this. The rooms are tastefully spare, but lacking none of the requisite amenities, and the service is friendly, accomodating, but only as much as one wants or needs. Great recommendations of restaurants, markets, shops, and museum exhibitions satisfied all the touristic needs, but I must say given the extreme heat, and a level of exhaustion, I fell fast asleep and had a most restful stay. I had a great dinner, booked by the hotel at a place that my cousin, a Florentine, had not yet visited.

The grounds and common areas are similarly lovely with great artwork perfectly placed. One of the coolest details were the glowing shells that illuminated the lawn upon my return Riva Lofts was the perfect ending to a perfect week in the Florence area, and I appreciate Alice and her staff's great hospitality. I am looking forward to a return visit I hope in the not too distant future.
