“You Can Do Better In Florence”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2013

Hotel Consigli, April/May 2013.

We were in two minds about choosing this hotel as the reviews on TA were mixed. In addition the managers responses on T/A were reminiscent of Basil Fawlty. In short, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Our criteria for this hotel were based on location, price, parking, breakfast included, and ideally an outdoor area with views. While this hotel ticked all the boxes, it fell short in most areas. The location itself could not be faulted, fronting Arno River with great views. And although many might be put off by older character-style hotels, we were not.

We opted for a junior suite, believing that a better room in a hotel with fewer stars would make good sense. The room allegedly led on to a private outdoor terrace, which was a big draw card for us. However, some of the photos and details were ambiguous, which led us to email and phone the hotel for confirmation. On both occasions, despite the language difficulties, we were assured it had a private outdoor terrace. Suffice to say, as our attached photos show, it is only private to the extent that some dead twigs separate you from both your neighbor and the public outdoor area. Luckily, the public area was not heavily used late at night while we there, which was our biggest concern.

The room itself while reasonably spacious, was sparsely decorated, uninteresting, and not entirely clean. The bedding was also quite old and grubby. The bathroom, while huge, was very dated, with several minor but irritating faults.

The standard of the breakfast was relatively poor, with few options, and not particularly fresh. On our last morning, there were even fewer options, which we were advised was due to the public holiday the previous day. Despite the fact that this could easily be overcome with a fridge, our experience was that most shops were open that day anyway.

Overall, it was a disappointing experience, and we’d recommend you’d spend your money elsewhere.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

We stayed here in for two nights in November 2013. Our room was on the ground floor just off of the main reception. The room was clean and tidy, reasonably decorated, with a large comfy bed. The bathroom was well equipped although the shower door was broken. The hotel is around a 10-15 minute walk along the picturesque river to main squares and streets of Florence (which, I must add, is one of the most beautiful cities I have been lucky enough to visit). It is around a 10 minute walk from the train station, so the location is pretty good all round. Breakfast was good - boiled eggs, toast, cereal, croissants, fruit juice etc. The wi-fi didn't work in our room unfortunately - it did work out in the hotel reception, however. I can't fault this hotel - it was certainly well above average, but I can't quite give it the four stars that are required for very good.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review!!

We are happy that you liked our hotel,we are sorry for the shower's door broken by the previous guest (we need specific parts to repair it that need 2 days to arrive), wi-fi in the rooms should work but we have very big walls, in the reception area always works or you can use also our computer.
We hope to see you again in the future!

Best regards,
Alessandro and Sarah

This was a small, almost bed and breakfast like hotel on a quiet street running parallel to the Arno River and next to the American Embassy. It is about a 10-15 minute walk to the del Vecchio bridge. The breakfast was included with the room rate and was very nice with a coffee/cappuccino/espresso machine and is on the second floor. We stayed in the annex room 15 which was through the courtyard and upstairs. We didn't mind since we have no problems walking up stairs. If you do, you might need to stay somewhere else. There is a beautiful spiral staircase leading up to the roof where we watched a beautiful sunset. The staff was very friendly and arranged a cab to pick us up to take us to the train station which is not very far. I'm a very light sleeper and this is a beautiful old building and I could hear when others would come in at night. The rooms were clean and the bed was comfortable. For the price, I would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: There is a main building and an annex building through the courtyard and upstairs. (no elevator) I...

This is a perfectly nice hotel. We slept well there, ate a standard-for-this-type-of-hotel breakfast, and really enjoyed the walks along the Arno. It has a convenient (once you find it) parking lot in back. The staff are helpful and friendly. We don't give it an "excellent" rating because it is just a little far from the center of action (but still easily walkable), and because it is near the tipping point for needing some renovations.

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for your good review!

We are so happy that you enjoyed your stay here, the hotel is located along the river 15 minutes max from Ponte Vecchio and the area here is so quiet, we are far from the noise but close to the action. The hotel was totally restaurated 2 years ago, each year we have to re-paint everything (in the law season) but the structure is new.

Best regards,
Alessandro

My husband and I just got back from our trip to Italy. The Hotel Consigli and their staff treated us like family. The room was spacious ( we were in room 21). It had a nice, quiet, private terrace overlooking the river where we spent evenings watching the sunset with a nice glass of wine. We walked from there to everything we wanted to see in Florence. The hotel is next to the consulate, so no traffic going past the hotel makes it a quiet place to come home to after a day of sightseeing. Allesandro and the team gave us great recommendations for restaurants and were always available to answer our questions. They have a nice European breakfast in a wonderful room with frescoes on the ceiling that overlooks the river. It has hotel in the name, but really feels like a cozy bed and breakfast. We will definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: I would definitely recommend room 21

Our second stay, this time for 6 nights. The rooms are spacious, and have all you need. The breakfast just wasn't quite as it should have been. The juice machine had only one option, the tea tastes of coffee coming from the same machine, and depending on the service, what supplies were available, ie rolls, eggs ham etc. The cereals on offer were all sweet and very processed. The location is great, away from madding crowds, and with the US Embassy close by, not any passing traffic, as the roads are closed off.

Dear guest,

Thank you for your review and your second time here!

I think our breakfast is enough for our hotel's category, the machine usually has 2 types of juice (orange and mixed fruit), probably the second was exhausted and was put only orange, it's impossible that tea taste of coffee because it is true that comes from the same machine but the liquids are never in contact and they come out from two different holes, about cereals i do not know types of breakfast cereals that are not sweet. All of have our buffet (pastries, eggs, ham, etc. ) is always available and replenished and if something at a given time is finished JUST ASK for it! (it seems funny that in 6 days you didn't say anything to me or my staff and then you do the reviews from home when it would be much easier to talk about it immediately here in order to improve something that you think does not work).

Best regards,
Alessandro

I was so excited to stay here, based on the reviews and the pictures I saw. However, the place just doesn't merit the price.

The bathroom door wouldn't even close, the toilet sometimes takes a few tries before it flushes - other times the flusher gets stuck and the toilet runs unless you manually have to pop it out. A couple of the walls in the bathroom looks like they've seen better days. The shower, sink, toilet and bidet seem pretty new - although the toilet is installed at a slant, which makes it strange to use.

The pillows are a bit too thick and hard. There's a spare pillow in the wardrobe that's actually soft - my boyfriend and I had to share it so we could sleep. We booked the room more than 30 days in advance yet got stuck with a room on the ground floor that faces the parking lot. It started to get hot in the middle of the night so we opened the window only to get attacked by mosquitos.

Service-wise, we were treated well by Alessandro via email but not by the attendant who checked us in.

Alessandro helped me reserve a table at a very popular restaurant. However, on the day of our arrival we suffered many unlucky travel delays. We were supposed to have dinner at 9pm, but had just arrived at the train station at 8:55pm. We called the front desk to let them know we were coming to check in and to ask if they could alert the restaurant so we don't lose our table - and also because the place closes its doors at 9:45pm. The man who answered wasn't Alessandro and also hadn't heard of the restaurant - it's a well-known place, and I feel someone working in hospitality should know these things. I spelled the place and asked him to call them.

When my boyfriend and I arrived at the hotel at around 9:15pm, the front desk attendant gave us the key, but while he was in the middle of telling us where our room was and what the Wifi was, a phone calls came in and he answered, talked at length, and kept us standing there. I waved to ask where our room was but he ignored me. When he got off the phone I asked where our room was, then asked if he called the restaurant - he told me restaurants don't mind if you arrive 10-15 minutes late - so I had to re-explain that we would actually be a half hour to 40 minutes late and that they have a closing time...AND him keeping us waiting was making us even more late. To top it off we had such a harrowing day of transit - and he did nothing to make us feel relief from finally arriving at the hotel.

He didn't even show us to our room, which I feel a 3-star hotel should. When we got in we saw a damp, dirty towel in our bathroom sink. On our way out of the hotel I gave it to him - surprisingly, he actually seemed embarrassed about that.

Thanks to his delays we had 10 minutes to get to the restaurant before they'd close the doors and so we had to run to make it.

Overall, the hotel just doesn't live up to its claims. The breakfast room is lovely, but who cares when the service and rooms are mediocre. A few years ago, I stayed at a budget hotel in Florence for half the price. It was also a bit run down and not so comfortable - but Hotel Consigli isn't that much better. What a shame

Room Tip: don't stay on the ground floor

It's sad to see that if something went wrong you have to write bad of a hotel and a guy who works there and that only does his duty trying to help all guests. Talking bad for free it is not fair nor correct especially with people who have been very kind and have also been able to book for the same evening one of the most visited restaurants in florence, but this is not even that important, I just think we have to think for a moment before writing anything publicly.
