“Clean, comfortable and great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

My husband and I planned our wedding in Tuscany and needed to wrap up final pre-ceremony documents at the US Consulate. Hotel Consigli was not only convenient walking distance to the consulate but is ideally situated on the Arno River where we enjoyed an evening concert, close to Ponte Vecchio shops and all the magnificence of Florence. When we return to Italy for our anniversary, we plan on staying there again!

3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

We stayed in this hotel in early July 2013 and had high expectations having read a number of great reviews of Tripadvisor and seen photographs of the property on its website.

We had a superior room on the first floor of the hotel which was pretty enormous. The room had varnished parquet flooring throughout and large pieces of antique furniture which were themselves dwarfed in the room given its size. The exposed electrical wiring hanging from the ceiling and evidently broken smoke alarm sadly detracted from the rest of the room.

The bathroom was equally large with a bath/shower at one end and a full height sash window at the other overlooking the gardens. It was disappointing that the room didn't have a free-standing shower but the lack of shower curtain over the bath also meant the water went everywhere.

The hotel is right on the river front and is next door to the American Consulate so security certainly wasn't a concern (!). It was a short walk into the centre of Florence from the hotel and the main train station is close by too.

The double doors to our room were off the first floor landing and looked to be original wooden doors, standing 10-15ft in height. Whilst aesthetically these were very beautiful, in practical terms they did a poor job in preventing sound being carried between the landing and the room. Our room was also next door to the breakfast room so any possibility of a lie-in was scuppered by the sound of other guests chatting as they walked up the main staircase and then stood over the coffee machine as it noiseley ground coffee beans. I perfectly accept that sound carries in older buildings but bedroom doors in hotels should be equipped to deal with this better.

The breakfast room itself was beautiful, overlooking the river and with a painted ceiling in the style of a Renaissance fresco. Breakfast itself was very disappointing, largely just white bread rolls, cold pre-boiled eggs and two or three types of cereal. The coffee was, as mentioned above, dispensed from a machine - the sort you might expect in an office or local swimming baths.

Despite the ornate surroundings and indisputable beauty of the building, this hotel was generally lacking in atmosphere. Once breakfast was over the hotel was deserted, and locating the one member of staff that covered reception was quite difficult. At one point I considered that Scooby-Doo might be required.

I'm sorry to say that on balance our stay here was disappointing, particularly given how much we had been looking forward to staying here. The hotel looks and is beautiful, and the location is fantastic but, dare I say it, is more of a grand B&B than the hotel it aspires to be.

Dear Guest,

We are sad that you left disappointed but sincerely this review it is a bit exaggerated and it makes me smile.

The smoke alarm in the middle of the room ceiling is not broken but it is new, they have just to finish the work after summer,we have to change a lot of things here when we bought this place becouse was made like a private home and we have to change it in a hotel with modern services.

We made new bathrooms in all the rooms and this is a hard and expensive work,we use high quality materials,it is correct that in your bathroom there is no curtain on the buthtub for the moment but we want to put glass walls.

I want to be clear in this question, this is an old building and we want to preserve its original soul and architecture like the doors, they are not sound proofed but like you say they are original and beautiful,if we put new doors we will loose something of the building's style. This hotel is like a big home and everyone have to feel like home,if you choose a place like this you have to consider some aspects.

Breakfast it's very good and complete for our hotel's category,we have a lot of things and we give always the best we can give (breakfast it's always included in our rates). We have a coffee machine because it is more practical and offers a fast service, this machine grinds the coffee beans at the time as those of the bars.

There is always a person here (24 hours) and it is more than enough for 16 rooms, next time we will find a football team for you at the reception!

Regards,
Alessandro

This has been the third time my wife booked this hotel through the past 10 years. Each time we felt very happy being able to stay in this typical Florence hotel. It's located along the Arno river, a 10 min walk to Ognissanto place. As it is located next to the American Council the street allows no traffic just residents which ensures you a good night sleep! Ask for room 22: located on the second floor it offers you a great view on the Arno (you can practically see the Ponte Vecchio). From your room you have acces to a huge terrace. It feels great sitting there with a glas of wine! The room was recently renovated and gives you immediately a home coming feeling. The bathroom is like a ballroom! Even the staff is super. Allessandro is very helpfull. The closest shop is two blocks away called Il Centro, and is like a little supermercato. The breakfast is a bit basic but good. If you plan a city trip to Florence, this hotel is superb! No doubt for us, we would surely return!

Room Tip: Room 22 is spacious, has a big terrace and offers you a great view.

A group of 9 friends stayed here in Oct. 2012 for our first and last night in Italy. It was a great place and we all really loved it. I would recommend this hotel for it's view, location and pricing. We had a room upstairs with a terrace overlooking the Arno river. The room was big, clean and we loved having the French doors open to our terrace. It was close enough to walk to everything and felt very safe. If I were to go to Florence again I would stay here!

The hotel is situated right on the Arno, with no traffic on the roads around it, so it was a great break from the hussle of Firenze itself. Ponte Vecchio is only 10 minutes walk away. There is a lovely terrace on e second floor, some of which any resident can access with lovely views up river to the centre of Firenze. The service was great, even before we arrived. The hotel reserved timed access to the Ufizzi and Il Accedemia. They had left a bottle of Chianti for us as well. We stayed in the junior suite, which opened out onto the terrace and was fantastically spacious, enormously wide bed and some of the best views over the Arno. The only frustration is that it could really have done with a shower curtain for the bath. Overall we had a lovely time, aided by having a great hotel (the English of all the staff was great, compensating for our very poor Italian).

Dear Martyn,

Thank you so much for your great review!!!

We are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay here and we hope to see you again in the future! We always try to help our guests with museum reservations and for any suggestions, the Junior Suite is one of our best rooms with direct access into the terrace overlooking the river,i understand the problem of the shower curtain,we ordered some glass walls for the bath tubs.

Our best regards!

This lovely hotel just outside the heart of Florence was perfect for our short stay in Florence. Views of the Arno just outside the front windows; a beautiful breakfast room to start the day out right; and friendly helpful front desk personnel. Would certainly recommend.

Room Tip: Room # 4 on the first floor is really spacious with a great bathroom!

Great quiet location next to the Embassy, but easy access to main areas. Our room was the largest room we have every had in an Italian hotel, on the ground floor, with a big walk in shower. It was beautifully clean, the staff were friendly, breakfast was plentiful in the usual Italian style. Florence is such a lovely place and this was the ideal base. There are some great deals on this hotel and even though we got it for a great proce, it was great accomodation. Highly recommended!
