We had a confirmed internet reservation, and just to be sure, called 2 weeks prior to again confirm our reservation. The woman on the phone laughed and said "dont worry! yes we have your reservation!"
On arrival we were told, so sorry, they had made a human error and had no room available. Please take the map, she told us, and go over to Hotel California instead. The woman at reception was extremely insensitive to the language barrier, and it was only by telling her that I work in the travel industry, that she got someone to speak to us in English. Again, we were told there is no room available in spite of the doubly confirmed reservations.
From asking around, I discovered it is not at all uncommon for Relais Campanile to "overbook" and transfer their guests to the Hotel California. If you want to stay at Relais Campanile, also check any reviews for Hotel California, because you may well end up there instead.
