“Great location, excellent breakfast, clean room and comfortable bed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

Hotel Columba is an excellent value. Room was very clean and comfortable. The staff were great and but out an excellent breakfaste every morning. The hotel is in an excellent location within a short walk of everything you likely want to see in Florence. My only complaint was that the room was a little noisy at night. Some sort of machinery was running somewhere nearby. It wasn't so loud that it would wake you up, but it did make it a tiny bit difficult to fall asleep at times.

It is a family-run B&B and it has a great location with 5m walk to the centre, 2m to the Museo Academia (Statue of David-however i highly doubt if it is woth to give 11 euros for just to see one statue) and 10m to the train station. We had a warm and informative welcome and we were given a room upstairs in the apartment of the family. The room was facing backyard so we didnt suffer from any noise from the Street. The room was very clean. There was a variety of toileteries and they were put in abundance. The breakfast was continental and sufficient. The staff would even anticipate your need (new coffee, new plate) before you ask.
However, the stone floor was left bare without any carpet so it was too cold to step on it bare feet and it made the room quite cold as well. It would be better to have more than one electricity outlet too. The bathroom was a bit tiny and i didnt like the towels made from piece of cloth, I would prefer regular towels.
I would recommend it but i am not sure if i would visit again. The staff and location were great but they could invest a bit more in the rooms i think

Room Tip: A room facing backyard would save you from the noise of the street

Based on the other reviews on tripadvisor, we decided to book this hotel and we are very happy that we did. We were there for more than a week and it felt like home away from home. Thanks to Rosanna, Sabina and Michael for making our stay a memorable one. As already reviewed by others, the hotel is situated in a central location - a few minutes walk from the Dumo. We miss the morning cappucino very much! All in all, we had a very pleasant stay in Florence.

Disappointing
We chose this hotel based on reviews read here. Although clean, and the staff was friendly the room was stuffy and loud, the bed horrible and it just wasn’t a great deal. I have been to Florence before and although the location was fine the hotel itself just so-so. You can find better.

Room Tip: ask for a room away from the street

My wife and I stayed here for two nights last week and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The staff, with Sabina in particular, spoke excellent English, were charming and invariably helpful and provided a map, directions to the major sights and recommendations for restaurants. The hotel's location could hardly be faulted, being close to most of the major attractions. Our room was a reasonable size and the bathroom was more than adequate. The TV system is one of the best I have seen in a non-English speaking country hotel with Sky Italia programming providing many English language programmes. Furthermore, if watching an English language programme (film or series)dubbed into Italian, in most cases you could access the original soundtrack by using the remote control. Breakfast was good with a choice of coffee types. The one drawback was the noise from the street. With our room facing the main street, to have the window open resulted in loud traffic noise, particularly in the early morning. My only other down side was parking the car. This was left, on arrival, to be collected from the roadside and taken to a remotely located garage at a cost of €23 per night and returned on departure. A car for use while in Florence is superfluous and walking is the best option. However, these minor moans did not detract from a thoroughly enjoyable stay and I would heartily recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to stay in Florence.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing away from Via Cavour

This hotel is ideally situated. Most of the main tourist spots are within walking distance, and the railway station is only a 10 to 15 minute walk. It is a family run hotel, and the staff are exceptionally kind and helpful. The rooms are reasonably large with bathrooms, air conditioning, TV, mini bar and an electronic safe. The guest area of the hotel is limited, but there is a small sitting area with an adjoining dining room where breakfast is served.

The hotel is easy to find, and the upstairs lobby is accessed by a tiny ancient lift (or by the stairs). Bear in mind that the hotel is within the ZTL (limited traffic access zone), so beware if you are driving. The hotel staff can advise you if you need to drive. Because of the lack of vehicles, the hotel is quiet and peaceful.

Overall this is a very good hotel considering how expensive it is to stay in Florence. The friendly and helpful staff are charming, and its excellent location would persuade me to stay again. Well done Hotel Colomba!

Room Tip: Rooms probably all about the same

This hotel is on the second floor, yes the lift is small, but honestly, what do you expect? You're in Italy, the buildings are old and you're lucky that some places even have lifts! The stairs are not that difficult to climb, my partner and I had no trouble walking up and down the stairs with our luggage.

My partner and I stayed for three nights. The staff were very friendly and we were escorted to our room and given a map on checking in. We were in a double room with a very large bathroom away from the street, so city noises were not a concern. The walls are quite thin however and you will be able to hear your neighbor and anyone walking past the room having conversations.

Some downsides to the experience include leaving our key at reception on leaving. While I appreciate this does assist staff in knowing when a room can be cleaned and to know when guests are in or out, I have also found "do not disturb" signs to be just as effective in other hotels. The 01,30AM lock-out was also a concern, as it does restrict you somewhat if you want to go out on the town.

For the room itself, our 'double' bed was actually two singles pushed together with the double linen on it. I had thought it strange that the bedside lamps were so far apart but once I realised the beds had been pushed together it made sense. Clearly the hotel was totally full if they needed to take such measures to accommodate our booking, so we did not waste anyone's time by raising this issue with staff.

The bathroom was easy to flood as the shower only had a little bi-fold partition on one side, which was not able to close in anyway to form a space. The floor around the shower, and the toilet, was soaked after each shower despite our best efforts. The tap for the shower protrudes into the shower space, and if you aren't careful you may knock it and scald yourself. In addition to this, the bathroom light is on a sensor, which will shut off after a certain amount of time, even if you are still in the room. It would be easier to have a light switch as opposed to the sensor.

The satellite TV boasted around 30 channels, however after flicking through all options we could only get about 5 of these to appear and the rest of the options displayed just a blue screen. The main channels we could pick up were CNN and BBC but they would drop signal all the time and so the best option for me was to take advantage of the communal bookshelf near the computer, which is stocked full of interesting reads.

Breakfast was each morning between 08,00-10,00 and we did not partake, so I cannot comment on the quality.

All in all, an average experience. This hotel, while charming and run by a lovely family did not meet my specific needs as a traveler, and I was quite put out by the concerns I outlined above. The hotel is in a great location, however, it is a safe area during the day and the night with the popular sights a very short walk away.
