“A great stay in Florence”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2012

My wife and I stayed here for two nights last week and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The staff, with Sabina in particular, spoke excellent English, were charming and invariably helpful and provided a map, directions to the major sights and recommendations for restaurants. The hotel's location could hardly be faulted, being close to most of the major attractions. Our room was a reasonable size and the bathroom was more than adequate. The TV system is one of the best I have seen in a non-English speaking country hotel with Sky Italia programming providing many English language programmes. Furthermore, if watching an English language programme (film or series)dubbed into Italian, in most cases you could access the original soundtrack by using the remote control. Breakfast was good with a choice of coffee types. The one drawback was the noise from the street. With our room facing the main street, to have the window open resulted in loud traffic noise, particularly in the early morning. My only other down side was parking the car. This was left, on arrival, to be collected from the roadside and taken to a remotely located garage at a cost of €23 per night and returned on departure. A car for use while in Florence is superfluous and walking is the best option. However, these minor moans did not detract from a thoroughly enjoyable stay and I would heartily recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to stay in Florence.

This hotel is ideally situated. Most of the main tourist spots are within walking distance, and the railway station is only a 10 to 15 minute walk. It is a family run hotel, and the staff are exceptionally kind and helpful. The rooms are reasonably large with bathrooms, air conditioning, TV, mini bar and an electronic safe. The guest area of the hotel is limited, but there is a small sitting area with an adjoining dining room where breakfast is served.

The hotel is easy to find, and the upstairs lobby is accessed by a tiny ancient lift (or by the stairs). Bear in mind that the hotel is within the ZTL (limited traffic access zone), so beware if you are driving. The hotel staff can advise you if you need to drive. Because of the lack of vehicles, the hotel is quiet and peaceful.

Overall this is a very good hotel considering how expensive it is to stay in Florence. The friendly and helpful staff are charming, and its excellent location would persuade me to stay again. Well done Hotel Colomba!

This hotel is on the second floor, yes the lift is small, but honestly, what do you expect? You're in Italy, the buildings are old and you're lucky that some places even have lifts! The stairs are not that difficult to climb, my partner and I had no trouble walking up and down the stairs with our luggage.

My partner and I stayed for three nights. The staff were very friendly and we were escorted to our room and given a map on checking in. We were in a double room with a very large bathroom away from the street, so city noises were not a concern. The walls are quite thin however and you will be able to hear your neighbor and anyone walking past the room having conversations.

Some downsides to the experience include leaving our key at reception on leaving. While I appreciate this does assist staff in knowing when a room can be cleaned and to know when guests are in or out, I have also found "do not disturb" signs to be just as effective in other hotels. The 01,30AM lock-out was also a concern, as it does restrict you somewhat if you want to go out on the town.

For the room itself, our 'double' bed was actually two singles pushed together with the double linen on it. I had thought it strange that the bedside lamps were so far apart but once I realised the beds had been pushed together it made sense. Clearly the hotel was totally full if they needed to take such measures to accommodate our booking, so we did not waste anyone's time by raising this issue with staff.

The bathroom was easy to flood as the shower only had a little bi-fold partition on one side, which was not able to close in anyway to form a space. The floor around the shower, and the toilet, was soaked after each shower despite our best efforts. The tap for the shower protrudes into the shower space, and if you aren't careful you may knock it and scald yourself. In addition to this, the bathroom light is on a sensor, which will shut off after a certain amount of time, even if you are still in the room. It would be easier to have a light switch as opposed to the sensor.

The satellite TV boasted around 30 channels, however after flicking through all options we could only get about 5 of these to appear and the rest of the options displayed just a blue screen. The main channels we could pick up were CNN and BBC but they would drop signal all the time and so the best option for me was to take advantage of the communal bookshelf near the computer, which is stocked full of interesting reads.

Breakfast was each morning between 08,00-10,00 and we did not partake, so I cannot comment on the quality.

All in all, an average experience. This hotel, while charming and run by a lovely family did not meet my specific needs as a traveler, and I was quite put out by the concerns I outlined above. The hotel is in a great location, however, it is a safe area during the day and the night with the popular sights a very short walk away.

You only have to read previous reviews to know that this really is a very special Hotel. As a team, Roseanna, Michele with Sabina and rest of the staff/family have mastered the art of giving quality service in every aspect of the Hotel business. They are perceptive to their guests needs with out being condescending or calculated. There is a refreshing sense of being a guest but also a friend. The Hotel Colomba truly will make your stay memorable, whether it is business or pleasure, long or short, the staff are skilled, polite and genuinely hospitable in their conduct, The location is undoubtedly perfect for the culture of Florence, the actual Hotel is immaculate in every detail along with providing in house needs. We can only confirm all the positive comments already written about this amazing Hotel. Well done to all at Hotel Colomba for making our stay so absolutely wonderful.............only wish we had had one of those recommended smiley Cappuccino for breakfast !, one of many reasons to make a return journey to see you all.

Our favorite, why? Charm, clean, location, breakfast, but most of all staff. Can you believe they made us an Academia reservation and stayed on hold for 20 minutes to do it. Now that's service. And a nice friendly family run place. Thank YOU hotel Colomba.

We booked this hotel online and were not sure of what to expect, but we were very pleasantly surprised! It is in an excellent location in the centre of everything. Roseanna and her team were very friendly and helpful and gave us lots of good local information. The room was the largest we had in Italy with ample room for the four of us. The bathroom was tight but adequate and the shower was good! Everything was spotlessly clean. Breakfast was good with a lot of variety and the coffees were excellent! The only negative from our perspective was that on the Saturday night there was a lot of noise from the street below and we didn't get a lot of sleep. Maybe when finances permit they could invest in some double glazing which would insulate the noise out. That being said, we would definitely stay here again.

After a long drive getting to the hotel, we were very disappointed with the front lobby on the main level. Even though the hotel lobby is on the second level, the main lobby is not inviting and is not typical of any hotels. We seriously thought of checking out the next day. On the positive side, the staff is very friendly and helpful. The room was clean. The breakfast buffet was satisfactory.

I am sorry if the first impression was not the best for you! I would like to point out that in the Centro Storico it is actually typical and rather common to share entrances to buildings. In fact in our building there are 3 hotels as well as an exhibition of Leonardo's machines.

As to the remark about seriously thinking about checking out, it may not have been a bad idea, given that in the end, the room rate did not cover the bills we had for calling the technician to open the safe, with the key broken in the lock and to replace it!!
