“Home away from Home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2011

We just returned from our wedding in Florence, and it was made even more special by the staff at Hotel Colomba. Planning our wedding from Dallas was no easy feat, but having Sabina and Rosanna help coordinate all our rooms made it so much easier. My family and I have stayed here an number of times and every time is even more special. Could not recommend a better place, the personality of the staff, the family feel is what makes it so memorable.

Stayed here for 3 nights in July (was recommended by friends to do so). Hotel was fantastic! Location was perfect, only 3 minutes walk to the duomo and city centre. Rooms were large, comfortable bed, very clean, very secure, air conditioned and even had free Wifi!!
There was even a lift to take luggage up which was a bonus not many hotels have in Italy. Our stay was made even more pleasant with hotel owner Rosanna and her friendly staff. Breakfasts were a treat and were the best we had in all our hotels throughout Italy (bfast included fresh fruit, selection of freshly made coffee + other fresh continental foods). I will be returning to Hotel Colomba without hesitation and could not recommend it more to anyone staying in Florence.

We spent the better part of our Italian holiday based out of this lovely little hotel just 2 blocks from the Duomo. Spending 5 nights in a place really gives you an opportunity to get a feel for the people who work there, and every day, these people just got nicer and nicer (except for one little exchange, described below.) Our room was not in the main part of the hotel, but was a converted room in the couple's upstairs apartment. At first, it seemed a little odd going through a computer room and a living room to get to our room, but we never felt like we were intruding and always had a sense of privacy.

The first thing to note about this hotel is it's location. It is perfectly located just to the north of the Duomo, one block to the west of the Academia. Because you are to the north of the Duomo, you are not smack in the middle of heavy tourist traffic. We were still able to get just about anywhere of importance within 15 minutes walking.

Our room had a lovely view of the domes of the Medici chapel. And being able to look down from our window onto what I imagine is typical Florentine daily life (think little back patios, clotheslines, and people watering potted gardens) was just lovely.

One thing to be aware of: just like most hotels, they ask you to leave your key when you leave. I normally have no problem with this, and expect it when traveling. The only problem is that there is no night door guy, and one of the owners (the older gentleman) stays up waiting for you to get in so that he can give you back the key. We did not realize this, and we have a bit of a penchant for staying out very late during vacations. Our first night, we stayed out until 4 am, and came back stumbling. I didn't think anything of it, since this is a hotel and we are adults. The next morning, however, the wife was a little snippy to us about it. I had mentioned, "yeah, we had a late night last night," to which she replied, "yeah. I heard all about it" with a slight roll of eyes. I understand that he had to stay up to let us in, but that's part of what owning a hotel means. If you're unwilling to hire a night clerk, then you'll occasionally have to deal with the drunken Americans who come back way too late. I just would have expected less attitude on this one occasion.

Other than that one little exchange, this was a great place to stay. Especially if you are "early to bed" people, this would probably be your best value for your Florentine getaway!

Room Tip: If you want more of a B and B feel, ask for the upstairs room. As an added bonus, the nightly tax ra...

The main draw to this hotel is definitely the location. It is literally a 1 minute walk to the Duomo! We had a very limited amount of time in Florence so I wanted to stay as close to the main sites as possible and this hotel was perfect in that regard. Also the staff upon check in, check out was very helpful, efficient, and polite. I know hotels in Florence are genrally quite expensive so even though our room felt like a college dorm room, I suppose considering the location the value was still relatively fair. The towels were a bit worn and the bathroom is very small. Everything was very clean though and I would stay here again for the convenience of the location. Just don't think that just because you're paying $200 USD per night that you will be in anything near a "fancy" hotel.

We walked from the rail station to the hotel on a very hot & humid day. The street signs were a little confusing because they change names between blocks. But we found the hotel and checked in and they had the AC unit on from early that morning to greet us with some cool air. This was so much appreciated. The staff was friendly and helped us book a tour outside of Florence which was very enjoyable. The hotel location is great for sightseeing in Florence. Easy walk to restaurants and entertainment. Hotel is clean and an excellent value for the city. The breakfast was very generous and the cappaccino was awesome and I'm not usually a big fan of them! This hotel was recommended to me and it did not let me down. I would recommend a stay at this hotel to anyone.

Website of hotel says that it is at 600 meters from train , which is not correct. It is more than 1km and not easy to walk if you have luggage with you. It is better to take taxi.

dead insects were there in two pots of juice during morning breakfast, can't commit anymore about the cleanliness of hotel

It is always interesting to read what our guests write about the hotel and sometimes about its' staff, we take pride in our job and our hotel, and we thank them very much, being in high summer it happened that a 'bug' met its' end in the juice jar! Brought to our notice we threw it all away, rinsed out the jars and put in fresh juices!!

The SMN train station is about a 10minute walk from the hotel.

I also want to thank Sabina from Colomba Hotel in Florence who was very nice and comprehensive.
Hope I can make this trip soon and write a "real" review.
