I stayed for 3 nights in November, 2007. I really wanted to like this place. In fact, I did. That is what makes this review difficult but I feel that I must be accurate to let fellow travelers know about my experience.
What I liked: Within a block of the Florence train station so very convenient. Has two elevators. Has wireless internet in the rooms (although I couldn't get it to work on my laptop for some reason). Also has 5 computers in the lobby area which are available for guests free of charge. Has a wonderful hot and cold breakfast in the mornings. I had a single room (twin bed) and it was small but still had sufficient room. Bathroom was average size. Had 3 English tv stations if that matters to you. Within walking distance of all the sites. In fact, rooms facing the station will have great views of the duomo dome. Staff were friendly and helpful. Has a storage area for bags if you need to check out and leave your bags for awhile.
The negative: The hair dryer was old in my room and didn't work very well. Walls are thin so if you get loud neighbors you might want to have some ear plugs with. Rooms were a little dated but nothing too bad. Again...I did really like this place. Until the day after I checked out and bed bug bites started showing up all over my body. While I was in the room, I killed a bug. At the time, I didn't think a lot of it because bugs occasionally get into hotel rooms. However, a day after vacating the property, I started developing bumps on my arms, legs and back. Initially, I thought I might be having an allergic reaction to something at the property I was then staying at (although I wasn't aware to be allergic to anything); however, the next day the bumps started turning into welts and looked like insect bites. Not understanding what was going on since the extent of insect bites in my life have been the mosquito and occasional bumble bee, I started doing some internet research. I was completely distressed upon seeing a photo of a bed bug that looked exactly like the bug I had killed in the room at this hotel. My bites were also consistent in looks with bed bug bites (which typically take a couple days to appear). Afterwards, I also read about other signs of bed bugs which at the time I had missed. Having never experienced something like this in my life given the amount of traveling I have done, I did not know the signs to look for in regard to bed bugs and suspect others will not. I spent the last two days of my vacation, the long flight home and some days at home uncomfortable, covered in calomine lotion, and otherwise looking hideous from the over 150 bites I counted on my body. I did email the hotel about what had occurred and requested they take action. I did receive a response from them. They stated that they took my email seriously and would do everything possible to solve the problem as soon as possible.
I hope that mine was an isolated problem. If it weren't for my bites, I would have rated this property a 4.
