“Great Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2013

We found every aspect of this hotel to be wonderful. This includes the gorgeous breakfast room with its generous and delicious food, beautiful lounge rooms, lovely roof top terrace bar, beautifully designed bathroom and large accomodations. Wonderful housekeeping service. The location cannot be beat and the staff were very accomodating. We would be happy to stay here again.

We have just completed a wonderful three night stay. The location is superb, right next to the Uffizi Gallery and one hundred metres from the Ponte Vecchio. Room 403 was excellent and the view of the river and the bridge was so glorious, I almost didn't want to leave the room. I can't commend the staff enough for their helpfulness and the welcoming sparkling Spumante and peanuts were a nice touch. Enjoyed the complimentary drink in the roof top bar too. Great view of the Duomo over the terra cotta rooftops. I don't expect European hotel rooms to be a great size (have experienced some very, very small ones) but this one had plenty of room and an absolutely beautiful bathroom. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Get a room on the 4th floor overlooking the river and Ponte Vecchio

My husband and I have just returned from a wonderful stay in the hotel Degli Orafi. Our room was lovely, overlooking the Arno river and the hotel couldn't be better positioned, it is literally right by the Ufizzi gallery and all other major sights. The staff were very attentive and the breakfast was fantastic and in a room which was positively palatial. Thank you for making our week in Florence positively memorable.

This hotel is on the river orno and next to the Uffizzi gallery. Wonderful breakfast included in an elegant room and happy hour on the roof was beautiful with a view of the Duomo and a nice plate of apps. The only negative was the slow elevator but the trick is to watch when the light is out push the button. It takes several tries. Easy walk to the shops on the only bridge that survived WWII.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013

My wife and I stayed here in June 2013. The hotel has an excellent location on the River Arno next to the Uffizi Gallery and the Ponte Vecchio. It is in an old monastery restored to a nice looking hotel. In places the owners have exposed the old bricks and painted walls to very nice effect. The rooftop bar/restaurant has good views of the top of the Duomo and is great on sunny breezy afternoons and evenings. The waiter in the bar, Saverio, is great. His English is excellent and he is unfailingly friendly, helpful, and polite. Most people were using him as a combination waiter and tour guide.

We asked for a quiet room and were assured by the girl at check in that we were getting one. However, we were given a room on the second floor facing the Arno that was far from quiet. Although the street below is closed to all private cars except taxis, people strolling along the Arno are often loud until late hours. Street cleaning trucks and garbage trucks ply the street starting relatively early in the morning. There was also some noise from within the hotel. So unless you're a heavy sleeper, you may want to ask for a high floor, change rooms if you get a noisy one, or just pick a different hotel. We were staying only three nights, and after discovering the noise the first night decided it wasn't worth switching rooms.

The elevators are perhaps the most infuriating feature of this hotel. There are two. One is so confusing to operate it's unusable (guests, including us, talk with each other about how bad it is and how people only attempt it once before just using the other). Unfortunately, the other cannot be "called" unless there is no one using it. So if the elevator is moving, it does no good to push the button on your floor. You need to wait until the elevator is empty and sitting at some floor. Then you can press the button and call it to your floor. I took the stairs probably 10 times out of frustration waiting for the elevator.

Breakfast was included in our rate and was good. There is a good selection of cold food plus hot bacon and scrambled eggs. The waitresses don't speak a word of English, so you just muddle through if you have no Italian (we don't). The breakfast room is lovely, with a painted ceiling. While good, though, and far better than you will find at American hotels, the breakfast doesn't compare to top-notch (and similarly or lower-priced) hotels in Europe and Asia (think Hotel Bristol Berlin, Renaissance Munich, Langham Kowloon, Hotel Nikko Tokyo).

Like many hotels in Europe, either the heat or the air conditioning is on. Not both. When we arrived, the air conditioning had been set to 21C and the high temperature that day was 22C. The low was about 14C. We asked for a space heater, but the hotel does not keep them in stock. That is not the sign of a good hotel. The best they could do was turn off the air conditioning. The room never got warm and we froze that night. As in many European hotels, the temperature control system on the wall is partially fake. All you can do is set the temperature of whatever unit is on, in this case the air conditioning, and you could not turn off the air conditioning yourself (the hotel staff had to do it at the front desk). All in all, it was quite annoying. We never had the AC turned back on during our visit and the temperature was passable although rarely warm enough for us.

We paid "only" €300 ($400) per night for an executive double room, which was one of the hotel's larger rooms. The room was average size for a European hotel and small for an American hotel. A Holiday Inn Express will give you a larger room in the U.S. The problem with Florence is that demand apparently overwhelms supply, at least for hotels. The incentive to provide top quality lodging at decent prices is missing. It's a similar problem to London. So you just can't get what you would in places like Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam, Vienna, etc.

Staff at the hotel is friendly, competent, and seems to be trying hard. Would we stay here again? I spent 10-12 hours deciding on this hotel because the choices in the mid-range (yes, €300 per night is "mid-range" in Florence) are so limited. We might stay here again, but I would also look some more.

Tip: If you buy the Firenze Card before you come, you will save yourself hours in line for the museums. We went to 5-6 museums and waited between 0-2 minutes for each one. The lines for people without the card generally snaked around endlessly and must have taken an hour or two for entrance. The card is available online and you get what amounts to an e-ticket. You go to one of many places (e.g., Palazzo Vecchio) to pick up your card (it took us exactly 1 minute for that transaction) and then you use special entrances to all the museums that never have anyone in line.

Tip: Carry your valuables in a money belt under your clothing. We wore money belts for our valuables and carried an external fanny pack that contained nothing but water and facial tissues and occasionally a snack. We had two pickpocketing attempts on the fanny pack near the Duomo, and I am not a vulnerable looking person. The first pickpocket I actually caught in the act because my wife felt him try to unzip the fanny pack. I gave him one of the all-time ferocious stares but (wisely) decided against any further action as he was apparently professing his innocence in Italian. The second one managed to go undetected and got half a ham and cheese sandwich from the fanny pack. It had been in there a while on a hot day, so I hope he got food poisoning. But the point is to be wary and careful, especially near the Duomo, and even if you think you look athletic enough that pickpockets will avoid you.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for sharing your experience with us and other travelers on Tripadvisor.
We thank you for your kind comments about our staff, location and breakfast, it was nice to hear that you overall enjoyed your time with us.
I'd like to apologize if you encountered complicated and slow elevators during your stay, somehing we will take in consideration for the future.
Florence is a very popular place to visit and we are in the city centre so the normal city flow should be expected. For light sleepers we are more than happy to offer a inner court room.
Regarding the A/C we inform you that the temperature can be set by the client himself, so I am sorry for this misunderstanding. In June, as a common procedure we do not keep heating on. The A/C can be regulated and turned off as per any need. And obviously we offer extra blankets in every guest room. For safety reasons we cannot keep electric devices as Space heaters in stock. As the opposite most of our clients are very warm-blooded and with the hot summer temperatures in Florence we do not encounter this kind of a problem very often. Hopefully you will give us another chance to proof our efficiency.
For your question if you should come back and stay with us again we would answer:
- Of course! Due to numerous facts; Our fantastic location, especially after a long stroll out in the hectic city were you can immediately immerse yourself into our small and comfortable hotel. Take a relaxing drink ( welcome soft drink offered for free) in our gorgeous roof terrace bar were you can admire the views of both the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio. We furthermore , as you already know have a excellent multilingual staff that take care of every guest in a very proffessional but friendly way. Furthermore, breakfast in many hotels is paid apart and not included in the rate so in our opinion our abundant breakfast buffet, in a beautiful ancient ballroom is a nice experience itself. We hope you will take us in consideration for your next trip to Florence!

Warm regards

We stayed here for the first 3 nights of our honeymoon in June 2013. The front desk staff were excellent, really friendly and helpful, and as everywhere we have been in Italy, spoke excellent English. We had a lovely room on the second floor, although the number of flights of stairs would suggest it was higher! There was a lift if you needed it though.
We were taken up to our room by a lovely couple of trainee staff who showed us the room and bathroom etc. The room itself was a decent size and the bathroom was lovely with a great shower and bath. The bed was very comfortable, especially for a continental hotel.
For our honeymoon the hotel had left us a bottle of pink champagne on ice and a little bowl of nuts with a 'happy honeymoon' card, which was a lovely touch.

We visited the rooftop bar every evening before we want out to dinner and it really is a beautiful view, Duomo one side and the Ponte Vecchio the other. The bar staff are great and the cocktails were excellent, as were the regularly replenished snacks. Only problem were the evil pigeons, but the bar staff do their best to try and scare them off!

Breakfast was fabulous, a great selection of options, both healthy and more treaty, served in the most stunning breakfast room - who doesn't want to breakfast under chandeliers!

The location couldn't be beaten, so close to the heart of everything and some great restaurants for dinner.

We loved Florence and this hotel had a lot to do with that. Would love to return one day.
