“Look no further!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2010

Spent two nights in this small, clean, quiet and modern hotel deceptively tucked away, literally two minutes walk from the wonderful Duomo. The street entrance is unprepossessing, leading to the lift shaft which whisks you up to the hotel, but do not be put off. The rooms are modern, the reception friendly and helpful. One reception lady is Aussie (or NZ?) in origin so no problems with English, though the Italian receptionist speaks excellent English too.Location is superb. An easy 10 minute wheel of the cases from the main station, if you wish, Duomo on the doorstep, Galleria dell'Accademia (for David) a short stroll away. Everything within walking distance. At booking, the hotel offered to pre-book our ticket to the Galleria, meaning that we simply walked in without queueing when the day arrived. Helpful advice on places to eat from reception. If we were to return to Florence, we would wish to return to Il Perseo.

This was a great hotel. The room was quite big by European standards we had two twin beds and then another area with a couch/bed. It was around a 5 minute walk from the main train station. Only a few minutes walk away from Duomo. We came by train and we were able to walk everywhere from this location. The rooms were clean and neat. Internet was free but you need a wire which the hotel provided for me. The staff was great, all spoke English and were very helpful. If I every made it back to Florence I would stay there again. As with most European hotels although it had a/c it wasn't as cool as I would have liked it but it was a/c so I was happy. Lots of the hotels do not have any a/c or fans.

We stayed at Il Perseo with our 2 teenaged boys. The location was terrific, very close to the Duomo. We walked everywhere. Rooms were clean and nice. We had booked a suite which was not available and we ended up with 2 rooms which was great. Breakfast was ok. The staff was very helpful.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2010

We were a family of four and could only be accommodated in a “family suite”due to our numbers. From all the reviews on TA, I assumed this was a great place and booked. We were very underwhelmed and felt we had made a bad decision. Our family stayed in 5 hotels on our 2 week stay throughout Italy. We stayed at 3 (3 star hotels) and 2 (4 star hotels). This was a 3 star and we felt it was more like staying at a nice Motel 6 in the USA or a nice 2 star at the most. Of the 3 Italian (3 star hotels) we stayed in, this one was the poorest and most disappointing. Normally TA doesn’t steer me wrong.

FAMILY ROOM SUITE: I think if you are 2 people, the regular rooms are wonderful, at least that is what I have to assume from the reviews. I saw another family there so I know they have 2 family suites in the hotel. Apparently the family suite we got was horrible. Our family suite was at the very back of the building. It was the last room at the end of super dark hall. I believe the other family room was closer to the lobby (hopefully their room was nicer).

Our room was dark, dark dark and had a funny smell. They had a plug in air freshener in the bedroom the entire time to try and alleviate the stinky smell. The smell was most overwhelming in the morning. and smelled dirty clothing. The bedroom had a tiny balcony but on the balcony was a huge ugly generator/waterheater. We tried to keep the curtains closed so we didn’t have to see it, but then very little light.

In the family room there was only one window which looked out to the other 3 buildings and the hanging laundry of the hotel. It was awful. The family room had a 2 single beds but so little light. It just felt like a dungeon and was a bit depressing. There wasn’t any art on the wall except for a painting that was leaning up against the wall. The hall light in front of the bathroom was burned out, so it was very very dark.

The floors are tile, but there were food stains from previous occupants on the two chairs in the living room. Dust was also a problem accumulating on the floors. So twice during our stay, I took a towel and wiped the floor in the living room down and the area around the floor of the nightstand.

BATHROOM: Although very very dark, the bathroom was fine. The towel warmer stopped working on day 3 of our stay, but we were leaving after 4 nights, so we didn’t bother. There is only shampoo so good thing I brought my own conditioner. But the bathrooms are very clean.

LOCATION: The location cannot be beat. You are literally at the center of everything. It is a 3 min walk to the Duomo (right around the corner) and only about a 7 minute walk down the road from the train station. We walked everywhere, to the Uffizi (less than 10 minutes) , Academia etc. We also rented a car at the end of our Florence trip and the Avis pickup was only a 7 Euro taxi ride. I have to say that the location can’t be beat.

SERVICE: The people at the front desk are always helpful. They are happy to make an appointment for you at the Academia or Uffizi.

FREE WIFI: They do have free WIFI. Perhaps it was our bad room or its location in the back of the hotel. But we could not get the WIFI in our bedroom on the desk. The WIFI was so weak in our room that we could only get it by sitting in this one position on a chair in the living room. We didn’t use it much for this reason.

BREAKFAST: Like I said, we ate breakfast each morning as it was included in our package. Of all the breakfasts at all a 5 hotels we stayed at in Italy, this breakfast was the least impressive. I am diabetic, so I always need to have some protein. They had yogurt, dry cereals and a few breads. They have a tiny bowl of boiled eggs, but one day there were none. The room they serve breakfast in is very very tiny and cramped.

LOBBY: I realize that it is common for the main hotel lobby to be upstairs. In our hotel in Rome this was the same. But I have to admit when you first get to the Il Perseo l and see the lobby on the ground floor (street level) we were all worried. It is dirty, old and unkept. The elevator is small, but this is normal for all Italian hotels. When we took the elevator to the 3rd floor actual hotel lobby, it was better, but not as nice as our Rome hotel which also had a lobby on the 3rd floor.

The hotel is located very close to the Duomo and is a short walk to all the major attractions, shops and the main train station. Rooms were very clean but a little basic. Service was excellent and the included breakfast was more than adequate. The staff were very helpful and friendly and I would highly recommend this hotel as a base when visiting Florence.

This very centrally located hotel is walking distance to the train station, though quiet and adjacent to the Duomo. Its staff are friendly and helpful. The room was modern with traditional notes, with internet and a/c. I recommend it highly.

We were in Florence from July 5 - 11, and decided to use "Il Perseo" as our home base. It was a wise decision! We picked this hotel for 3 reasons: 1) advertised gluten-free options for breakfast 2) central location and proximity to many of Florence's sights 3) Tripadvisor recommendations. Louise and her staff were wonderful and the tour she booked for us to San Gimignano, Siena and a Chianti vineyard was fantastic. Our room (416) was spacious, clean and comfortable, and had a great view of the Duomo over the adjoining rooftops from one of the windows. A great experience, we would definitey return to this hotel.
