After being rushed all over Europe for several days, it was so pleasant ditching my group for a few hours, taking a few deep, badly needed breaths, and spending time with Manuela doing 2 things I love to do most... cook and eat. First let me say that it wasn't held where it normally is. There was a problem with the kitchen and Manuela sent me an e-mail asking me to come to her home instead. I appreciated her excellent communicating because otherwise, I could have wound up somewhere else. Her kitchen and home were so warm and inviting! There were only 4 of us in the class, so it was very intimate and hands on. For people looking for a professional cooking class, this may not be for you. Manuela's food is simple, basic, tasty and authentic Italian. There's no fuss and there's nothing complicated, and that's the way she wants it to be. I consider myself to be an accomplished cook and I've taken classes all over, including Cordon Bleu, yet I had a wonderful time and I learned all kinds of new things. Manuela makes it real. Furthermore, other classes I had looked into were very expensive or had 20 participants. I didn't feel it was necessary to pay $200 for a 4-5 hour class, and I didn't want to be part of large, impersonal group where there would be little opportunity to participate. We made simple, homemade tomato sauce, a couple of side dishes of vegetables, meat rolls, and tiramisu, and there was wine. Manuela sat with us around her kitchen table where we all ate the wonderful meal, got acquainted, and of course, talked about food. It was a pleasant way to spend time in Florence, and an experience well worth repeating.
