I climbed Giotto's Bell Tower today and I was very proud of myself! I'm in my 60's, have had 2 hip replacements but have tried to keep myself reasonably fit. I was astounded as the climb was much easier than I expected. The view from the top is really spectacular but even if you don't manage to go right up, the view from each level is well worth the effort. The stairs wind around, and at times it is narrow, but even at midday, it was not crowded and everyone politely allowed people to pass / squeeze by, and encouraged others on! It's actually quite airy, with little "windows" along the way, and the breeze between levels was very welcome. I went up on my own as It is probably not suitable for people with mobility issues, and the steps are quite narrow at times, so it pays to be careful when descending the tower. Climb at a sensible pace and take a bottle of water. A great experience!
