“Fascinating diversion”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012 via mobile

This is a terrific and slightly eccentric museum combining a huge number of stuffed animals, a stunning display of crystals and truly masterful anatomical waxworks - the latter proving a little too graphic for our 9 and 12 year olds. Great for a rainy day or when a break is needed from such a rich diet of art. Suggest a couple of hours in the morning and then lunch at the nearby trattoria casalinga - be sure to book the restaurant though.

“WOW! Creepy but educational and artistic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2012

Take a break from looking at Renaissance artwork and stuffing your face with pasta and go to this museum. The exhibits are excellent. The anatomical wax sculptures that they used for educational purposes to show dissections of the body are incredible, a little creepy but also really fascinating. The bird exhibit is really quite comprehensive and well organized. Great place to bring kids to educate them about nature and extinction. There was a special exhibit on crystals on the lower level that was quite breath taking. It's a truly magical place for adults and children.

“A great diversion from all that art....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2012

We thoroughly enjoyed "The Specola." The hours advertised are not the hours it is actually open, so don't go early in the morning.....We loved seeing how the animals were "preserved" in past centuries and the wax anatomy models were gruesome and so interesting. There was hardly anyone there, which was a nice change from all the touristy places that were jammed while we were in Florence.

“Sort of cool”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2012 via mobile

I am a biologist so I liked the wax demos of human anatomy from 1750 ish to 1820s. My daughter was not as thrilled with the body parts although she thought the stuffed animals were neat.
