“Mosquitos vs Location and View: what to do?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

I have stayed at Villa Belvedere at least four times. It is frustrating because it approaches a 10:10 but fails in such simple ways. Good points: Just up the hill on the south side of town. A short cab ride from the old city - a 20 minute walk in a relatively straight line. The rooms with balconies have a FABULOUS view of the Duomo at sun set. Beautiful gardens around. Truly is park like setting. I used to race back just to get there in time to have a glass of prosecco out on the balcony (and the balconies are large enough to sit on comfortably). The downside is management are, well, cheap. They have AC, but don't turn it on unless they feel like it. And they don't feel like it unless the outside temp. is above a level. Even that would be fine - big windows, hilltop location, cool breezes...BUT MOSQUITOS. The place is crawling with them after dark and the postage-stamp sized "swimming pool" that I have never seen open except in pictures appears to be the prime breeding ground of them. They have yet to hear of screen doors or windows in most of Italy and Villa Belvedere is no exception. Your options are thus to get eaten alive with fresh air and windows open or broil in stuffy non-air conditioned rooms with windows closed. No amount of pleading will change that dynamic. Pray for a heat wave. Please note - while I stayed there over a year ago, current reviews suggest no change.

We arrived from Cinque Terre to the hotel in the afternoon. The room costs us 140 euros (breakfast included) plus 8 euros (cash only) city tax. It wasn't very hard to find. The free parking space was half empty so it was pretty easy for us. When we arrived, they couldn't quite find our hotel booking, so they put us to the lift with the staff (seems that they have lot of available room) but the lift door wasn't closed until 5 minutes coz they were still confirming our reservation. The receptionist was lost for a moment but then they have found it and the staff showed us the room. Our Identification Card was left in the reception (for them to make a copy). The room was big enough with a big balcony with an amazing view especially at night. The room and bathroom was very clean. The air-conditioning was working very well. The wifi connection (password was at the bedroom) was great. The staff wasn't rude nor friendly expect from the staff (man) during breakfast who were very funny and friendly. The location of the hotel is good for those who are arriving by car. They have a free sparking space. (Parking space in Florence can be very expensive.) There is also a bus stop nearby but the waiting time can take a while so you have to ask the reception so that you can manage your time very well. We walked from the hotel to the city-center. It took us 20 minutes and with a nice weather, you wouldn't really mind since it is a nice neighborhood. At night, we took a cab which costs us 10 euros and fair enough, I would say. Overall experience was good enough. I wouldn't recommend it to those who wants to be in the center. This is a nice hotel in a quiet side of Florence. We were traveling around Tuscany by car so our choices of accommodation depends on many things such as parking space and so on. The hotel is good enough and 4 star for European standards.

Great hotel in a quiet, suburban area on the hills in the southern part of Florence. We spent three days there in hot July and enjoyed every minute, including the pool. The hotel is about 20 - 30 minutes away from the historical centre of Florence and does not offer dinner. Very good breakfast and friendly service. The only drawback was the fairly poor internet connection - not an unusual feature in Italy.

Just checked out of Villa Belvedere after 1 week in Florences 40 degrees. The 6 of us were given 3 rooms in the annexe, having it all to ourselves and all in all we were happy with our stay at the hotel.

On the plus side the pool and the hotel bar to accompany it are the hotels shining stars - especially in 40 degrees as well as the spacious rooms, their balcony and view over the city of Florence!

On the downside is the breakfast that simply isn't good enough, the lack of minibar in the rooms, the dark and old inventory and the fact that you feel a little monitored by the many members of the family that run the hotel and are present at the hotel almost all day.

PS. Bring your mosquito repellent

PPS. When its 40 degrees outside, the walk to the city is closer to 40 min. than 30:)

If you plan to stay a couple of days in Firenze I will recommend Hotel Villa Belvedere.
The hotel is located in a beautiful and well-kept garden with swimming pool, sun loungers and seating areas. It was nice to relax there with a cappuccino after a long day inside Firenze.
We stayed in room 36, which must be the best room. It is spacious and has beautiful furniture and a stunning terrace with an equally stunning view of Florence. The breakfast was nice with friendly and attentive service.
It is possible to walk down to the city center from the hotel but home it's harder when it's up. There was, however, a bus every half hour throughout the day and evening, so it was no problem to ride the bus.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a terrace area, it's worth the extra money.

I spent four nights with my two teenage children, and it really was wonderful to end up the extremely hot and busy day visiting Florence in their swimming pool, and enjoying the most beautiful view from our private terrace.
It's obvious from the minute you walk into the hotel that it's run by the family who are there all the time checking every detail.
The staff is very friendly too.
The hotel is slightly out of Florence, but there's a bus stop within 500 yards.

Unfortunately, we stayed there for only two nights as it was one of the best hotels I’ve been to. The hotel from one of the two rooms I booked was wonderful and we were able to take many magnificent pictures of Florence from there, as it has a amazing view over the city. The surrounding is very attractive and quiet. The breakfast was good; it has fruits, honey, fresh coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, croissants, and if you want more, the waiter is ready to prepare eggs or omelet. In addition to all this, there is fresh desserts. There was a pool and a garden near the entrance of the hotel and area was very peaceful. Of course, it was a bit cold and if you are in need of an extra blanket, there are a few in the cupboard. The staff were very friendly and the bathroom was very clean too. There is a free parking in the hotel, where you can park your car (if you have one), although they are very few. The hotel provides free wireless internet, after asking for the password. There is a marvelous fountain near the garden. It is a hotel I would certainly return to.

Room Tip: Ask for the room with view to the city
