“Good location near train station, definitely ask for the back rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2014

Convenient and cheap hotel right opposite train station, we arrived late (midnight) and was perfect for us. Florence is easy to get around so was a pleasant stroll to all major sites. Breakfast was decent and rooms to a high standard, appears to have been recently renovated. Following previous tripadvisor advice took the back rooms which were definitely quieter although our room (451) just happened to be directly under the kitchen so was woken to noises and chats of the staff setting up breakfast, an early wake up call but not excessively loud and if you are a light sleeper would avoid. Asked to change rooms which they were v.happy to do but ended up staying in the room to save unpacking and wasn't as bad the 2nd night. Helpful staff and booked a tour the following day which met at central station (most appear to) so is v.Convenient for any early starts.

The hotel is advertised as a 4-star, however, we would not consider this a 4 star hotel at all but rather a 3 star. The staff are ok but at the front desk they are not very helpful. We had a leak from the ceiling that was wetting our bed and it took ages to get it looked at. We changed rooms, we never got an apology. Breakfast was average. Not the best introduction to such a beautiful city. The hotel itself is good but its is poorly and carelessly managed. We won't come back and we wouldn't recommend this hotel. In comparison to other hotels we stayed at across Italy, where we had been delighted by the charming staff and the friendliness and help offered to us, this has not been a nice experience.

What we liked was location, close to S. Maria Novella Stazione; and Liana at the front desk was very helpful and friendly. All the rest of the staff were indifferent or bothered by us or too busy. Our room was very cramped and noisy. The aroma of the bathroom made me sneeze the entire time. The breakfast room was not good plus they would clear things 15 mins before it was finished so we felt rushed all the time. If we purchased a 3 star hotel then it would have been fine but we purchased a 4 star hotel so it was actually not good value. Would not recommend, sorry.

Beware - this hotel runs a scam!! We booked and pre-paid to stay at the "Hotel Club." Upon arrival we were told that we would actually be staying at a separate residence around the corner. We were taken to the "Hotel Diplomat." Obviously this was a sister hotel, however still a completely different hotel to what we had actually booked and PAID for! I booked the "Hotel Cub" based on ratings and reviews from Trip Advisor and Expedia. I would never have booked the "Hotel Diplomat" based on their same reviews. I was not informed at any point that I would be staying in a different hotel to what I had actually booked. Im not sure how they can get away with this??? Although I was unhappy, I didn't complain at this point as I simply did not want to dampen the mood of my holiday. The room at the Hotel Diplomat was an absolute disgrace! For starters the lift was very jolty and actually felt unsafe. The room had a really strong odd musty smell. The room was like an oven - unbearably HOT! When I complained to reception I was told that the air conditioning does not work in the rooms at this time of year. I was told to open the window but turn off all the lights so I didn't get bitten by mosquito's. The only problem with this was, because we were on the first floor, the noise from the street was unbearable. I then asked to be moved to a higher floor to try and escape some of the street noise only to be told that they were completely booked out so that was not possible. However upon returning to my room I had a look at Expedia and I could actually book a room at this same hotel for this particular night! We endured a completely sleepless night, we had to keep the window open, as it was that stuffy we could hardly breath. The mosquito's still came in even though all the lights were off. This would have to be the worst hotel I have personally EVER stayed in. The customer service is non-existent and the facilities poor. I would certainly never recommend this hotel group to anyone.

Right next to the train station, where you can take a high speed train to other destinations for the day (Venice) or catch the Hop On/Hop Off bus for city tours or get on any of the My Tours buses for Tuscany or Cinque Terre, etc. The hotel is clean, beds comfortable, air conditioning works well and the breakfast was very good. Close to 3 really good restaurants: Ristorante La Dantesca (for pizza), Ristorante Amici Florence and Ristorante dall'Oste for fantastic t-bone steak and is located just meters away from the Diplomat.

Room Tip: My room faced the train station but once I closed the dark out blind and set the air conditioning wh...
