“Friendly staff and very central.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2011

The ever friendly welcome and the central location makes this hotel a great choice for exploring Florence. Situated in an ancient historic building, the rooms benefit from high ceilings and are comfortable and quiet. Bathrooms are on the small side but tolerable. Good breakfast was included. Will stay again.

The Alessandra is what you would expect from a good two start hotel, not much in way of amenities. The rooms are small and clean, the beds are comfortable, a descent continental breakfast (love their Cappuccino), and it is on a very quiet street walking distance to most of the important sites. What makes it exceptional is the staff. These are people who really like what they are doing and treat their guest like guest. From giving advice to what tours to take and were to go, to welcoming you back at night like a close friend.

I normally do not bother to write a review, because a hotel is normally a hotel. But this hotel is different. If you have diffulty walking, the stairs could be a problem, but everything is so much as perfect. The location is absolutely faboulous. Right in the hart of the centre. We had the 4-persons room, which even had a little view on the river. The room was so big, even 5 stars hotels we stayed in, couldn't come close. The children loved it, because they could play there after a day of walking and being still in the museum. The breakfast is good, simple, but clean and of everything is something. For a two star hotel..couldn't ask for more. The cappuccino is dillicious. The friendliness of the people working is outstanding. Not too much, but it's clear that they will help you with everything if you want to and they always smile, not fake, but really smile. They love the hotel and they love their city. The rooms are clean every single day.
We will definitely come back, because three days were too little for this city and we will definitely book here again!
We were also not aware that the shopping is great, maybe even better then Milan, besides the magnificent sightseeing. Great city to go to!

There is a big tip for everyone with kids. The hotel is just a few steps away from the big Uffizi and the Piazza Di S. Firenze. On the corner there is a chocolate factory Rivoire. For the kids, you have to order the hot chocolate (witch is more like a chocolate soup, but nothing you ever tasted before) and for the grownups, you have to take the Spritz. With that Spritz, you get a lot of small bites, which are delicious.
If the kids are too tired to sit in a restaurant in the evening. Go to The Vesuvius on the Via Dante (which is also close). They have very fresh real ovenbaked pizza's and they are quick to take away.
Also great for kids, go to the Boboli gardens behind the Palazzo Pitti (also a short walk from the hotel). Great view of the city, more than impressive, and they can run!

I can't say enough wonderful things about our stay at this hotel. We have just finished 3 months of travel and our stay at Hotel Alessandra is one that will stay with me as our best experience due largely to the warm and friendly service we received. Plus, the location is perfect, right in the centre of the old city. We fell in love with the charm of Florence and this hotel.

Our room was simple, spacious and comfortable, so you couldn't ask for much more. Also, I think our room number was 26, which is supposed to be the best room. You open the window to a view of the river. Made me feel like I was living EM Forster's A Room With a View.

But above all the staff were all lovely and friendly. Because it's not a large hotel you really get the extra care and attention that you don't get from a larger chain. It had real character.

There is no restaurant other than for breakfast, which is included in the price of the room, but this is no issue in the slightest as you have so many wonderful restaurants on your doorstep to discover.

If you stay in Florence you must stay here!

Pros: I don't think you could find a better location to all the major sites. 2 minutes walk to the Ponte Vecchio and direct lines to almost everything else from there. Our room was a Jr. Suite which was huge and nicely appointed even by US standards, but we did not see the other rooms, so I can’t comment on them. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Montie was one of the highlights of our stay in Italy. He is enthusiastic , funny and very helpful. His recommendations for local restaurants with good food for a reasonable price were great.
Cons: The hotel is not on the ground floor. Two flights of stairs to the elevator was a bit challenging with luggage. No onsite parking which is pretty typical for this area. Driving from Lake Como, we returned our rental car after dropping off our luggage at the hotel. You don’t need a car in Florence and the buses to Siena and other places are easy and frequent.
Overall we were very pleased with Hotel Alessandra and would definitely stay again the location can't be beat.

Hotel Alessandra was fabulous. The hotel was quaint and had a unique atmosphere that really felt more like what you'd expect someone's home in Florence to likely look like, especially versus a standard hotel where everything is built and decorated the same. Florence is a smaller city but regardless the location was rather central.

Of utmost importance was the service. Before arriving they sent us information about excursions my mom and I could do, like a cooking class and trips to Pisa, etc. Monti (not sure about the spelling!) at the front desk woke up early on the day of our arrival to allow us to use his room as a place to change and freshen up after we arrived on an extremely early AM train and the current tenants of our room had yet to check out. On the last day of our trip, I accidentally left some shoes I'd bought in another store. By the time I realized the shopkeepers had left for the day and our flight home was at 7am the next morning. Monti helped me write an e-mail in Italian to the shopkeeper and personally shipped the shoes to my house in the US the next day. All of the staff was very friendly and helpful. They told you things to do, places to see, and ensured every day had been enjoyable. From the decor and location to the service it felt like being welcomed into someone's home.

yet again hotel alessandra has delivered a fabulous stay in firenze. this is the 8th time i have stayed here. on every occasion it has been superb. the location is perfect close to everything, easy walk to santa maria novella and yet not too noisey. interesting views out the windows of the rooftops of florence or of the little church next door. clean well climatised. unbelievablly great service and helpful friendly staff what ever time of day or night. this is a family business and it shows in the attention to detail and the warmth of the stay. the rooms are all good even the single no bath room which has a great view and a big seat in the window to curl up in.
i would never consider staying anywhere else in florence and always am excited to be going back.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Our family run hotel is right in the heart of Florence old town - near to the Uffizi Gallery and Ponte Vecchio. Without doubt, Hotel Alessandra is one of the most centrally located hotels in Florence. In this privileged position, Hotel Alessandra offers a home away from home, with our friendly team and extensive knowledge of the local area. The hotel entrance is situated on the second floor of the building. You can reach the reception floor using the lift, small but working fine (in the 1400s buildings hadn't been designed with this in mind!) But please note that there are around 30 steps from the entrance on the street level to the departure of the lift. We very much look forward to seeing you! Andrea and Anna ... more   less
