“Ephiphany ..”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2013

I travelled to Florence for the magical Ephiphany parade/celebrations - excellent and well worth the trip. The hotel is close to the main station (my preference) as it's then easy to walk everywhere as Florence is flat and there's SO much to see. Bus services just around the other side of the block - opposite the station. Walking to all the major attractions is easy tho' Florence isn't a small area - you have to walk. The hotel (traditional Firenze styling) loc'n is quiet tho' safe if you are walking back at night - well lit. The room wasn't overly large but the bed was big and comfortable so that made up for it plus you are out most of the time, however, there's no English on TV services. Bathroom a good size, very clean, and with all the amenities - good linen throughout. Breakfast was a good choice and plentiful; hotel common areas are small tho' comfortable. Reception desk staff were friendly and helpful. Good restaurants nearby. Close to the main Market to see how the Florentines live. I had a good connection to the Net with my own modem. Price good and I would happily recommend to personal friends.

I stayed at Porta Faenza from the 9th through the 12th of december. The hotel common areas were great and well decorated. The staff were extremely helpful. The issues I had were that the bed was extremely uncomfortable. My back was hurting the rest of the trip. Also, I had an extremely small bad of laundry (3 shirts, one pair of pants and a few pairs of socks). I was charged 30 euros or $42.00 to have my items washed. Ridiculous!

Porta Faenza was more than we possibly could imagine by looking on the internet when we were planning our Christmas vacation in Italy! It's located in the centre of Firenze with only a short walk into the city centre. The location is a perfect match between quiet street, and close to the attractions. The room we got made us feel as if we were royal, with hand decorated roof at least 4 meter above the great bed!!! The staff at the hotel was positive and answered all our requests quickly and in a great way, yet they were staying in the background so that we could experience Firenze in a free and positive way. And to you at Porta Faenza: We will come back!!! Definately!!!

Room Tip: Do as we did: Ask the staff! :-)

We went to Florence for 5 days in Christmas and We chose the Hotel because of the price, the internet conexion with NO extra-charges, and that it´s located close to the train station. The breakfast ist good, the rooms for us 4 was big enough and the bathroom clean and in good conditions. There are plenty of restaurants around the hotel and you can reach all turistic places walking. I would come back.

Room Tip: This is the only bad point, since the room was noisy but not from outside, but for the air condition...

I've been to Florence four times, and the Porta Faenza is the only hotel I would stay at. And here is why I keep coming back:

I love the European quaintness of the hotel located on a narrow cobblestone street.
I do a lot of one day side trips via train, and with the hotel that's two blocks from the train station, it's a perfect location. That's convenient especially if you have luggage in tow.
The hotel desk is managed by two of the friendliest, most helpful and charming young English speaking ladies you could ever hope for in your traveling experiences - Francesca and Beatrice - you are the best. And they always remember me!
The rooms are larger compared to other European hotels I've stayed at especially with those high ceilings. And everything is clean and well taken care of.
All of the Florence sites are within easy walking distances.
Use of a free computer.
And the hotel is but a few steps from my most favorite restaurant in Florence - Enzo and Piero.

What's not to like!! You bet I'm coming back!

Room Tip: Top floor facing Faenza

Location was pretty good, about 5 minutes walk to the train station and probably 10 minutes walk to the nearby shops and restaurants. The first room that we were given was however bad because there was a bad damp smell and when I turned on the tap, yellow water came out! I then approached the counter lady for a change of room and she warmly helped me to switch to another room. We were then given another bigger room. Ceiling was high thus it felt even bigger. Toilet was clean too. Overall, it was good. So if you aren't happy with the room for a good reason, ask for a change!

Florence is a small city with no metros... so it is important to be close to the major sites as well as the train station Santa maria. This hotel does both and more! The rooms are clean and quiet, the bathrooms are well equipped. The best part is their service to borrow english movies - the collection is not the best but it is handy with no english channels on TV. Also the breakfast is large and well laid out - the perfect thing to start off a day of walking.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Hotel Porta Faenza is situated in Via Faenza - one of the earliest medieval streets in Florence - near Porta Faenza, a gate in the fifteenth-century city walls. It was created in 1997 through the restoration and conversion of Palazzo Pegna, the old residence of a family of merchants, whose original structure has been kept intact. Porta Faenza was part of the city walls and was situated at the end of what is up till now called Via Faenza. It has been so called not for being placed towards the town in Emilia, but from the name of the Nuns from Faenza, who had their convent in the neighbourhood once. Between 1534 and 1537 Porta Faenza was joined to the Fortezza da Basso without being demolished: by watching attentively you can still distinguish its squared profile in the central bastion towards the city or its arch from the inside of the fortress. The Hotel will make you savour the warm atmosphere of the old-time Florentine houses: the tile floor, the exposed beams, the old tools scattered everywhere, together with all the comforts will make it your ideal home in the old Florence. The Hotel Porta Faenza is centrally located, very close to the main railway station (Santa Maria Novella), to Palazzo dei Congressi (the Conference Centre) and to the Fortezza da Basso. The most interesting monuments and museums in Florence are within easy walking distance. For being situated in a pedestrian precinct, the Hotel is a quiet and pleasant place, the ideal point of departure for you to discover Florence and its artistic and cultural life. ... more   less
