“Good location; Nice, but a bit small”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

Read several reviews before booking this hotel for our 2-night stay in Florence for our honeymoon. The front desk staff was pretty friendly. The first woman that greeted us didn't speak much English, but she helped us get situated for our short stay. The room itself was kind of tiny. Had to push 2 double beds together to make a full size. The bathroom was a bit tight on space and the shower leaked. Very strange shower door and shower head arrangement. Not a big deal, just more of a nuisance. Breakfast was included. Pretty basic selection, but served it's purpose. Overall, I would recommend this hotel if you're looking for a short stay (3 days or less) and one that's close to the train station, but in somewhat close proximity to the main attractions (i.e. The Duomo).

Room Tip: If you're booked for a 'Leisure Double' room, ask for an upgrade.

We stayed in this hotel for two nights and were incredibly pleased with our stay. The location was great, within easy walking distance of the Duomo and through authentic Florence. However, the biggest positive was the desk staff, they were super helpful in making reservations, giving us recommendations and organising logistics for us which made our stay in Florence much better. The hotel isn't super fancy and doesn't have the high end facilities if that is what you are looking for but had everything we needed for truly exploring Florence and next time we are in town this is the first place we will look up. Big thumbs up to the staff at Porta Faenza.

Very pleasant hotel in a great location -close to the train station and the open markets and a short walk to the duomo and other attractions on a lane which caters for pedestrians mainly. The room was a good size and was very clean and comfortable with good decor for an older building. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was fine by Italian standards. Very reasonable price for a hotel on a quiet street in such a beautiful city.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floors are best.

My wife and I spent four wonderful days here at Porta Faenza. The acccomodations were great. Most of our time was not spent in the hotel but rather blanketing the city. However, the time we spent here was very pleasant. They offered a computer in the lobby for checking email and free internet in which reception in the room was great. Breakfast was a normal spread of pastries, ham, cheese, coffee, juices, cereal and cookies. Nonetheless if you want this type of breakfast you can easily find it in the city. The atmosphere and staff here were excellent and accomodating to our needs.
The external noise level really did not bother us and was kept low. However, the comfortable bed provided us to sleep sound. If you are not a sound sleeper, understand you are staying in the city so expect alittle noise. If this bothers you, stay out of town. I am from a rural area and this did not bother me.The hotel was only about a 5 minute walk from the train staion and within 10 minutes if that from the Duomo.
Also near was a 99 euro store in which one could purchase water, chips, sodas and adaptors for your plug in's in case you leave yours at home.

Dislikes- Eggs and bacon would be nice, but not necessary. Otherwise this place was great for us. Limited TV channels. (However, we don't travel to sit in a hotel and watch TV.)

My wife and I would stay here again with this friendly staff.

Room Tip: We stayed on the second floor which was very nice.

We booked Porta Faenza through Citali and were lucky enough to have room 303 which has its own small rooftop terrance - a nice place to either prepare for walking the streets of Florence or winding down from having done so - though no real view other than other rooftops (presumably the tower crane a few streets away is not permanent). Large bathroom and huge shower cubicle. The beds are on the hard side but very comfortable and we had no trouble sleeping. Despite what the room information says there a loads more channels on the TV just none of them in English. There was no bottle opener in the mini bar and disappointingly reception couldn't supply one (dont worry lateral thinking saved the day). Excellent WiFi quality making it well worth bringing a tablet or PC to support your travels. Staff friendly and welcoming. Plenty to eat at breakfast with good choice.

Hotel is a short walk from the main Station and the Duomo. There are two good restaurants up the street on the way into the centre and left out of the entrance is a small shop selling drinks (including water) and a little further a small cafe.

The hotel is 350m for the train station and close to the historic center. It is quiet and the room was clean. The wifi connexion worked well and the breakfast was perfect. It has a good price/quality ratio. People at the desk were not to speechy but they were very helpful (the airline lost our luggage and they called them until we received them) and they speak both french and english very well. If I ever return to Florence I will certainly stay there again and I would easily recommend it!

This is an economical hotel for the location and price. The rooms are small but clean. The front desk is quiet but friendly. The beds are hard as rock and our shower couldn't be used on the wall as it flooded the bathroom. You had at hold in your hand, turn off to soap or shampoo and turn off again. Not ideal.
The Gelato place on the corner was fantastic though. And great to visit the market down the street. You can walk from the train station. Another plus.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Hotel Porta Faenza is situated in Via Faenza - one of the earliest medieval streets in Florence - near Porta Faenza, a gate in the fifteenth-century city walls. It was created in 1997 through the restoration and conversion of Palazzo Pegna, the old residence of a family of merchants, whose original structure has been kept intact. Porta Faenza was part of the city walls and was situated at the end of what is up till now called Via Faenza. It has been so called not for being placed towards the town in Emilia, but from the name of the Nuns from Faenza, who had their convent in the neighbourhood once. Between 1534 and 1537 Porta Faenza was joined to the Fortezza da Basso without being demolished: by watching attentively you can still distinguish its squared profile in the central bastion towards the city or its arch from the inside of the fortress. The Hotel will make you savour the warm atmosphere of the old-time Florentine houses: the tile floor, the exposed beams, the old tools scattered everywhere, together with all the comforts will make it your ideal home in the old Florence. The Hotel Porta Faenza is centrally located, very close to the main railway station (Santa Maria Novella), to Palazzo dei Congressi (the Conference Centre) and to the Fortezza da Basso. The most interesting monuments and museums in Florence are within easy walking distance. For being situated in a pedestrian precinct, the Hotel is a quiet and pleasant place, the ideal point of departure for you to discover Florence and its artistic and cultural life. ... more   less
