“Tired in Florence”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2012

We chose to stay at the DeRose Palace because the tour we were joining in Florence started there.

The DeRose Palace is a block away from the Arno River, immediately behind the US Consulate. Its in a quiet neighborhood, but still within a reasonable walking distance of the major sights in downtown Florence. For that reason, its not a bad choice.

However - - - to be quite blunt, it's a bit tired. I don't think the building was originally built to be hotel because there doesn't seem to be much consistency among the rooms. It was reasonably clean, but the overall impression was that it had been there for a rather long time and was getting a bit frayed around the edges.

The first three nights we were in a room on the third floor. The room was large enough, but the AC didn't work very well at all. The weather was quite warm, but we were fortunate that we could open a window and get a bit of a breeze. The bath was small but adequate.

The last night we were there we were in a second floor room at the end of the corridor. It was really tiny, and the bath, which featured a jacuzzi, was really tiny. The weather was cooler, so we didn't need the AC - which was good because it wouldn't turn on.

Breakfast is included in the room, and is provided in a tiny breakfast room in the basement. It was adequate, but nothing to get excited about. The one high point is that they offered a good expresso option with breakfast. There is no restaurant although there are a number of very good choices within a few minutes walk of the hotel.

The bed in both rooms was equipped with an unusually firm mattress.

There is a computer in the lobby for guests, and there is wifi in the rooms. The wifi worked reasonably well once you got on, but it often required multiple attempts to get the network to respond.

The staff was pleasant and seemed to care about guests although some had limited English skills.

The price was a bit high for the overall quality, but that may be mainly a function of the location - hotels in Florence tend to be expensive.

We had only 24 hours to spend in Florence; fortunately we ended up at this very charming, romantic boutique hotel that was just a few blocks off the beaten path, yet very close to all the attractions. Very quiet streets, well kept property and very clean. It was almost dark when we came back from dinner and walked behind two little kids just coming home with ice cream cones. It must be a safe neighborhood when the locals are comfortable letting children out in the evening like that. Breakfast was impressive; a large selection of fruit, pastries, eggs, cereals, yogurts, juice, etc. Much more than what we had available in another town. The front desk staff (Carlo and co-workers) were very friendly and helpful in answering our questions and pointing us in the right direction. I don't know her name but the beautiful Sicilian lady at the desk was a sweetheart. Room size was just right, but we traveled light and didn't have a lot of stuff. Everything in the room worked fine. The showers were 50% bigger than the ones we had at another hotel, so we were very happy. Overall, an excellent choice and great price.

Location and price is good. Rooms are tiny, shower was only extremely hot and could not get cooler. Carlo the reception guy was great, the rest very very unfriendly! Stay here ONLY if you're not willing to pay more.

De Rose Palace Hotel can be safely recommended for all who want good service and stay in a hotel in with old fashion and very romantic style. Very nice people at reception and always happy to arrange parking for a car, booking tickets for the galleries, so you do not have to stand for hours in line to buy tickets at art galleries. We got already at the check-in a tourist map and Marco explained what was important to see in Florence and what they could help us with during our stay. Cozy double room with flat screen, minibar, kettle and air conditioning which was included in hotel price. Air conditioning was running all day, so we had a cool hotel room the whole time. Breakfast was good with fresh bread and plenty of toppings. No hot food for breakfast, but we was not missing this. Hotel is located in a quiet street and it was only 10 minutes’ walk to the center of Florence. We stayed at the hotel for a week from 27.07.2012 to 03.08.2012 and will also use this hotel when we shall visit Florence next time.
Thanks to Marco and for all good service during our stay.

I stayed here over the weekend and found the hotel clean and all amenities in good working order.

Other reviews have complained about the size of the rooms, I agree they are small, however I like to see as much of the place I am visiting when I choose to hop on a plane. So this did not bother me in the slightest.

Also people have mentioned the breakfast, it is the normal Italian fare, and thought it was fine, and there was plenty of food when I went for breakfast.

I found the staff spoke good english, and were very helpful.

Personally I have no complaints about the hotel, it is close to everything, yet a little bit quieter than the hotels around the squares, as it's on a side street.

I would definately stay here again, if in Florence. I would also recommend buying the Firenze card if you are planning to go to the major museums, it will possibly save you money, but it's important as you don't have to queue for them. Either buy tickets 2 weeks in advance or buy this card for accademia etc

We stayed at 7 hotels throughout our recent trip to Italy and I was impressed by them all ......except for this one. The one way streets and the directions to the hotel do not match and therefore it took us nearly an hour (after a long drive late at night) to actually park our car outside our hotel. There is very little English spoken by the staff and communication was difficult at times. The staff certainly do not go out of their way to help you. Breakfast is OK and the location is very handy and within easy walking distance of the centre of town and most of the sights. The worst aspect of our stay was that late rooms had wrongly sold us a room to sleep 3 people (Myself, Husband and 8 year old son). This was not the hotels error however, they did absolutely nothing to help us or to rectify the situation and my son was simply expected to sleep on the floor of the room. Disgraceful service to receive and I would certainly never stay at this hotel again!!!!

Dear Ashlynn,
Thanks for taking the time to comment,

Our apologies about the night porter who did not speak fluent English but it was an emergency that night.

Regarding the other hotel facilities, considering what you have written regarding the appropriate breakfast, the quiete location of the hotel and other services in general, why not go back to our hotel and try to book a double if you are two persons or triple if you are three people?
The night porter could not help much in any other way since the hotel was fully booked and could not change the room and assign you a triple room for three people, but please, do not forget that you have booked a double room for two people.

We gladly look forward to next time

sincerely
Osvaldo

If you value charm, this hotel is a little gem. Within easy walking distance of the Ponte Vecchio and Duomo, the hotel is on a quiet street away from major street or foot traffic. The rooms are small but adorable, lovingly appointed with chandeliers of Murano glass. The double bed was comfortable with plenty of sleeping room for two. A typical European breakfast of danish, rolls, yogurt, cheese and fresh fruit was served on china plates. Pots of coffee were fresh. Free internet service seemed to work fine, though log in and log out was a little tedious.
Staff was extremely pleasant and helpful.
Air conditioning was a little weak.
