“Perfect location, excellent rooms and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 19, 2011 via mobile

My wife and i just spent 2 weeks in Florence and stayed at il Guelfo Bianco for all except 4 days of our stay. It is within walking distance of all the major attractions yet is just out of the busiest area of town.

The rooms are clean, bathrooms updated, staff exceptionally friendly and helpful and the breakfast is just what we needed to begin the day. There is a small quiet balcony that overlooks a courtyard that is a great place for a drink or a gelato at the end of the day.

I would highly recommend il Guelfo Bianco for a stay in Florence

This is a lovely slightly quirky hotel - well placed for most of the things you'll need to see in your visit. Staff were welcoming and our room was splendid - loved the angels on the ceiling!! The Bistro attached was very quiet but we were well looked after by very enthusiastic and interested bar tender. Breakfasts were perfect and help with bookings for dinner worked well. All in all a great finish to a special week for us in Tuscany - many thanks.

We found the hotel through Trip Advisor and were not disappointed! It was ideally located for our visit to Florence. It was close to everything we wanted to see. Easy walking distance to the museums, sights and restaurants. We emailed the hotel in advance to arrange dropping off our luggage with our rental car and that went very smoothly. The front desk clerk also gave us excellent directions to the car-rental drop-off.

The staff recommended some excellent restaurants and made reservations when we wanted them. We were very happy with their suggestions, especially 4 Leoni.

Our room was clean, well appointed and very comfortable. We had booked #442 a long time in advance as it had a peekaboo view of the Duomo, though that is probably not important since we were out sightseeing all day. We enjoyed looking at the Duomo at dawn and dusk when we opened the shutters. The room had a good tub/shower, though we must have been doing something wrong as we got water all over the floor when we used the shower. I did enjoy soaking in the tub after walking all day!

The breakfasts were well stocked with the basics like cereal fruit, juice, bread, jams, hard-boiled eggs, Italian ham and some tasty croissants. The server quickly made us a cafe or cappucino to order when we sat down. They started serving at 730 which was good for the early risers heading to the museum openings.

The hotel also kindly booked tickets in advance for our visit to the Accademia and the Uffizi which saved us a lot of time waiting in lines.

San Lorenzo Market and many shops are just around the corner, for shoppers interested in leather goods!

The hotel called us a cab and it was nice to know there is a fixed fee to the airport, which varies by day/weekend. We were pleased with the 25 euro charge, including all our luggage, as we hit morning traffic and it would have cost a lot more at home in Canada.

Service and location could not have been better. Many thanks to Dario, Daniele, Antonella for all their help and for answering my many emails! I have to compliment them on their English too. We would definitely return on our next visit to Florence!

Room Tip: We enjoyed our room #442, but we did have the noise of the smoking room across the hall at night whe...

We found Guelfo Bianco little changed from the last time we stayed there, 11 years ago. For 181 euros a night, we got a quiet, clean and spacious room (#105) overlooking the central courtyard. The restored pensione is just down the street and around the corner from the Accademia and a 15 minute walk from the Uffizi galleries and the Ponte Vecchio. Front-desk staff gives helpful tips about new restaurants, summons cabs and capably manages the morning check-out crush. The breakfast buffet had plenty of variety -- cured meats, cheeses, cereals, yogurt and eggs -- but seems to have limited coffee to one serving. In a nice touch, staff and some of the guests have left desks and chairs around the place well stocked with travel guides, magazines and brochures so there's never a shortage of ideas for what to do next. In short, a good, clean, centrally located place to hang one's hat.

Dear Abettel,

thank very much for your review. You stayed here many years ago of course in the last 11 years we did several changes at our hotel to offer nicer rooms and a better services. We moved the front desk next to the entrance to have more space and offer a better “welcome” and assistance to our customers, we made a reading room available 24 hours for our customers, we made a new breakfast room and we renewed several rooms (with new paintings, new bathrooms). We opened a bistrot restaurant "Il Desco" where we serve lunch every day with express dishes and light snack and tasty homemade cakes with every kind of drink in teh afternoon till 8,00 pm. We added several access point to all floors to offer a free wi fi. My list could be very long….but I do not want to bore the Trip advisors readers….the most important thing you like the news!
I just need to advice you that in the breakfast room coffee is not limited to one serving: you like our espresso or cappuccino or american coffee and like another one you could have it :-)
Thanks and hope to see you again in the future
Bye bye

Stayed 4 nights in August, Amazing stay. Loved the hotel and the room, plenty of character which I particularly liked. Room was quirky - huge space with high wooden beamed ceiling. Staff were amazing and very helpful - Got a free arrival drink voucher which we got a glass of prosecco with and the barman wipped up a two taster plates of homegrown mozzarella and bruscetta (using homegrown tomatoes/olive oil) - I hadn't had dinner and was extremely hungry so this was amazing! Also, my girlfriends birthday was while we were staying and we arrived back to our room to find a present from the staff - wonderful touch. Loved Florence - this hotel couldn't get much closer to the Duomo if it tried and is smack bang in the middle of Florence - also amazing value and was half the price of the hotel we stayed in Venice. I would return here if ever back in Florence - Finally, I would highly recommend trying the food at the Acqua Al 2 restaurant - delicious!

We found the staff in this hotel to be passive and unfriendly until we dropped some euros in the dish at the front desk. Upon arrival, we had to carry our own bags up a flight of stairs to our room (the elevator only goes to the second floor), and down again to leave. The breakfasts were very good and our room was nice enough. The best part was the central location.

Room Tip: If you don't want to climb stairs ask for second floor.

Dear Lynda F.,
when the customers write a short review like yours, starting with a phrase “staff passive and unfriendly” I have only one word to say “sorry”. If you had this feeling about our staff that means we didn’t do a good job and I have to say sorry. At our hotel we always try to do our best to give a smiling “welcome” to our customers and we always try to do our best to be professional, friendly and helpful to guarantee to everbody who is staying with us a pleasant stay. We are not doing this just to have some euros as tips and please trust me it’s never our goal. Of course we are happy when people leave us a tip but it’s not first thought. Luckly we usually do a good job, in fact you can read several reviews where the customers are enthusiastic about the staff, but the point is we were not able to convey this feeling to you. And I have to say “sorry”.
However just give me the opportunity to point out something about the elevator: we do have 4 floors on the main building and two floors on the annexe building (two late 15th century palaces connected). We do have an elevator to get till 4th floor. We do have a mezzanine between first and second floor where we do have three lovely rooms overlooking the garden: to get the mezzanine from first floor you have to climb a stair. We do have also two rooms on the fifth floor and you can get then by elevator till 4th floor and than you have to climb a stair till 5th floor (about 10 steps). We do assign the rooms one day before the arrival (just when we are very busy I do assign the rooms a couple of days in advance) and of course we never know how many luggages the customers will have. However EVERYBODY at the front desk have to be ready to help the customers with the luggages (I am the first one who does even if I am the manager in fact sometimes I joke with the customers telling them I could be a porter if needed ). If the guy didn’t offer to you his help for the luggages I am sorry and I already talk to him and gave him a “red card” for his forgetfulness (I am a very strict referre with my staff about the customer satisfaction) .
I am happy you like our breakfast and also the room you had but please accept once again my apologies and PLEASE come to visit us again do not write our hotel into your “list of bad choices” I do promise you next time we will do our best to guarantee to you a lovely stay.
Best regards.

We had a great 3 day stay at this hotel - the staff was super friendly and helpful - they recommended great restaurants that we loved and also allowed us a late late late check out since our train back to Paris left after dinner. The location was central, the room was large and cool, and the breakfast delicious! We will stay there again when we return to Firenze.
