“Way overpriced....”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2013

We paid 300 euro for one hight here. What a waste of money. The hotel is in a terrible neighborhood. The room was dirty, AC didn't work, and the shower was barely more than a trickle. This is one of the worst cases I've ever seen of a hotel that looked nothing like the website. The staff was rude and dismissive when confronted with probelms. If you are considering booking this hotel, please look elsewhere. We booked it last minute as it seemed like it might have been the last hotel available in town. This is a two star hotel (generously) that charged five star prices.

I stayed here with a large group and they were accommodating, but the rooms were small and not that clean and horrible beds. Not a great location. A friend of mine had her ipad, that was well hidden in her duffle, stolen out of a LOCKED room, so take all valuable items with you for the day or use a safe (I can't remember that safes were even supplied).

We stayed here for 6 nights in April and booked it as it was billed as three star hotel. We were told at booking the room was to be small however not that the three star rating was not applicable. We arrived at the hotel it is basically near the SMN train station which has a series of small very narrow and busy streets. It is very grim during the day however at night is a hive of activity so be aware if you are looking for peace and quiet it is not here!

The staff on the desk are polite and helpful, the bed was made up daily and towels changed. The breakfast is basic. There is in room free wifi which is good.

As for the hotel in general it is seedy. The wallpaper and decor is from the 1980's and has seen no investment since then. This would be fine if it was intact but it is scuffed and patched up with hearts and rectangles filled in with a blue biro!

Our room on the first floor room 105 was not so small it had a big double and a single. The shower was small and was the head was covered in lime scale with little water pressure, there was no plug in the sink, the toilet dripped and the toilet roll holder was broken. The double bed sank in the middle and had metal buttons sticking out. The shelf at the back if the bed was dusty as were the side cabinets surfaces.

We discovered this is a hostel for teenage school children who must be on a course in florence they can be French or Italian and there are around 40 each morning at approx 7am in the lobby and at breakfast so it is noisy++ on the plus side they are really polite. It is noisy location for a hotel, the bins are emptied outside the hotel at 1.30am and the local bar empties its bottles at around 1am into the bin. Ginos bar on the corner is good for a late drink and Zara's in the market square is really good to eat at.

We spent five days in room 105 and have debated whether to give Basilea two or three stars.

On the plus side we found the room big and clean (we have stayed in other cheap Italian hotels and we found that the cleaning standard at the Basilea is truly excellent in comparison) and we were positively surprised that there was wireless internet in the room even though the hotel does not advertise it. Noise does travel through the walls, but there was little noise while we were sleeping because one of us is a light sleeper and would surely have woken up. And while some of the staff were indeed brusque and unsmiling initially, we found that they warmed up a little bit after we smiled at them and made pleasant conversation; and other staff members were friendly from the get-go, including when we asked them for help restarting the router for the wireless internet and lending us forks and knives when we had bought takeout food.

The big problem for us was the poor water pressure in the shower, which meant that I could not wash my long hair and even my boyfriend felt that he couldn't get properly clean.

The breakfast was not great but not terrible either. Again, considering the price we can't complain.

The location is excellent, and if you can live with the poor shower, this hotel is fine (especially if you can sleep through some noise from the hallway and other rooms). Finally, once again we must give kudos for the cleaning standard which was much better than we feared!

(And Basilea: Make sure to update your information to show that there is wireless internet in the room - we almost didn't book this hotel because we didn't know if we could live without it.)

Hotel Basilea is the worst place we have ever stopped! Such a shame for the wonderful City of Florence. Troubles of our stay started from the moment we came there. Unfriendly face of the woman at reception already was a sign of our bad choice, especially that we immediately was informed that there are "Problems with rooms",Manager on telephone asked us if we agree to go to other hotel, which is "a little bit farer away from the center". Usually we planned to stay in Florence just one night, thats why for us was extremely important the central location of the hotel. We booked Basilea 3 months before our visit. After 30 minutes of waiting the manager came and suddenly found two rooms for us but which haven´t been prepared yet, even we arrived after check in time. And then towels were missing and we had to get it ourself.
Anyway the bad luck continued with even more unpolite personal in the nightshift. Also the hot water pressure in the shower has been too less, that it was impossible to wash hair. The class of teenagers made it a loud and short night. Even we had a room at the end of the floor each knocking or closing of doors sounded like it´s next to bed. The last point is poor breakfast in the morning and unfriendly check out of the hotel. Basilea is definetly in our memory as the unfriendliest and unpleasant stay!

This wasn't the hotel we originally chose for our two night stay in Florence as we were asked to move due to the Goldini having issues with hot water.

On our arrival the staff were friendly and we paid out 3 Euros per night city tax each. We walked to our room which was quiet, not quite knowing what to expect not having been able to research.

The room was clean and tidy albeit, dated! There was plenty of space though and our needs were met by way of clean bedding and it was warm and dry. The bathroom was small but adequate.

This was a purely no frills hotel without a hair dryer or any tea making facilities. You got your bed, bath and if you were lucky a TV channel with a bit of music.

Breakfast was basic and comprised bread, small croissants, jam, butter, ham/cheese and cornflakes/muesli. On both mornings we noted that everyone was asking for the food to be replenished.

That said we booked this as an Easyjet city break for £93.00 per person so the proof is in the pudding, realistically we got what we paid for so are not going to grumble.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 222 with no outlook at all, but we were not on the road side so was extremely quie...

We were at the Basilea for 1 night because there were problems with our room at the hotel we'd originally booked (the Ginori al Duomo) and they had arranged alternative accommodation while our room was sorted out. I'm not at all sure how the Basilea got its 3 stars. On the plus side: staff very helpful, hotel nice and quiet, and our room had a nice view of the Duomo over the rooftops. On the negative side: everything else. It's in what seems like quite a rough area on the edge of the Centro Storico, it needs a good general refurbishment, our shower was tiny, the breakfast was really quite poor. And for some reason, we were charged €3 per person per night for the tourist tax, whereas our other hotel only charged €2. There are other better hotels to choose from in Florence, believe me.
