“a hotel non-renovated since... the Renaissance!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2012

When I read other reviews (negative ones) I thought that those people were... a bit mean! Well, they were ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! I stayed in a single room (the 3rd picture of their pics). Well, I felt like Estella in "Great Expectations"!!!! The only nice thing was a small terasse, but it was so dirty! The bathroom smelled very badly and you could have a shower straight on the floor! Besides, you could hear any sounds from any other room. Luckily, there are so many things to see in Florence that you fall asleep fast enough.

The staff were friendly except a guy, maybe the boss (at least in attitude). He was something like this: well, if you don't like it, other 10 (more) tourists will come ANYWAY!!!!

You really can't expect it to be the Ritz for the money (which is great value, it is true), but once when I was a teenager I stayed in a hostel which now really seemed the Ritz comparing to this hotel.

Good parts: location, the value (but do go else where if you afford it!) and the bed was confortable.

Room Tip: Go else where!

If your looking for the Ritz by all means go there. If you want a clean reasonably place in Florence this is a good place. My room was huge and had a bathroom and a tube, bonus when you have done a lot of walking a refrigerator was handy to have. Breakfast was good various rolls, bread, cheese, hard boiled eggs, plenty of choice each floor had a balcony and it was nice to sit out and relax with a glass of wine or having a take out dinner. Staff at the desk very friendly and helpful, Plenty of places to eat in the area and internet places locate nearby, although hotel did have wifi which I did not use. I was very pleased with this hotel esp as I tend to stay in B and B's with no lift and a very small room. Within walking distance of train station and located close to most of the main sites

I was shocked and disappointed when I got transferred (without prior notice) to this hotel by the boutique hotel where I had originally booked. The hotel seemed old and tired but, after spending 3 nights there, I realised that the facilities were quite OK, the staff were all friendly and helpful, and the there was a good and satisfactory selection of choices at breakfast, e.g. prosciutto, cheese, fresh fruit, eggs, (even if the coffee did come out of a dispensing machine). My room was spacious and quiet and the air conditioning worked.

I had initial complaints about the cleanliness of my room and towels upon arrival but the staff immediately made sure that these complaints were addressed.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room when making your booking.

This was a bad surprise. It's true that the town was full and that this was the only available room in town but nothing can justify how bad this experience was. The entrance looks like one of those shabby old places from the 70's but it could be alright if you have a decent room. Our room was old, dirty setted with old beds and loud ! At night there were vespa running down the road. Mosquitos were almost louder than the cars outside. The Breakfast is poor, cappuccino came out from a machine . if you are looking for an italian coffee much better if you take your family to the bar at the corner. the good thing is that you feel great as soon as you leave this place. Bye !

I chose Hotel Basilea as it looked good online and was giving a great price. This place is my only bad experience in the entire trip. When we reached Florence in August it was extremely hot and on getting to this hotel we realized they had no air conditioners. The location of the hotel is indeed good and even the rooms are big,but somehow it gave a very depressing feel. The lights were not sufficient too.If the air conditioner and lighting is improved then i guess it could be a nicer place. We also had to wait for our room to be ready. However one of their staff at the front desk was kind enough to settle us to another nearby hotel.

We booked this hotel at the last minute for an extra night in Florence at a cost of only 28 euros for a double with breakfast.
It is not in the prettiest part of Florence, thats for sure, however is only a 10 minute walk to the station, 5minutes to Accademia and Duomo, and has plenty of cheap eateries on the same road. The chinese TANG DYNASTIA being great value!
The room 218 was a clean, and a good size if a little"worn", small lcd tv with some english speaking channels,MTV being the main one.
Bathroom adequate, although shower on small side.
The room had a small balcony with a view over the rooftops of the duomo itself.
Breakfast was not up to much although there was staff on hand clearing dishes and replenishing items.
Wifi was 7 euros for 24 hours in the room although in the lobby downstairs was free.
Helpful reception staff were on hand 24/7.
