We were looking for a comfortable and reasonable place to stay in Florence and Il Magnifico more than met our expectations. It was a far cry from the bland, basic fare served up by the standard hotel chains.
The accommodation is on the third floor of a grand set of apartments, so you do need to be able to manage stairs. It is a straightforward walk to the centre of Florence, just under 2km to the Duomo, but there are also very regular bus services to all the main venues.
Our room was vast with the remains of the original ceiling frescoes still visible, and equipped with a comfortable king-sized bed. The bathroom was big although a shower curtain would have been useful. A nice touch were the towels tied in a neat bundle with a ribbon and changed regularly. Although advertised as a B&B the beds were made and room cleaned every day.
Then the breakfasts. We never knew that a traditional Florentine breakfast meant fresh cakes and pastries every day. There were also more traditional choices of toast, cereals and yoghurt, but the cakes were something special. One of the highlights for us was the great variety of other guests we met at breakfast. Although there was theoretically access to the kitchen all day, it would probably be a good idea to take along a travel kettle if you want hot drinks at night.
Barbara, her mother and Gran were wonderful hosts, but as our Italian was very basic it was helpful that Barbara could speak enough English to meet all our needs.
If you want an Italian family experience at a reasonable price then we would highly recommend Il Magnifico
