Firstly the good. This is indeed a grand old hotel, and a well-located Florence landmark. The views from the rooftop restaurant are amazing, and the staff are polite and service is generally good. The breakfast buffet included in the room rate is tasty and plentiful.
Now the bad. We got a very good deal for this hotel on a bidding site. I don’t think it was any coincidence that we were put in what must have been one of the worst rooms in the hotel, room 253 on the second floor. The view through the French windows was the ugly, windowless shell of the Majestic, a derelict hotel opposite. To the left was the plaza. (As an aside, given its prime location I wouldn’t expect the Majestic to be derelict for too much longer. If construction were going on, I fear, the room would have been even worse).
The lack of a view was actually no big deal, as we didn’t intend to spend long in the room. A more serious issue was th design flaw of the bathroom. Its peculiar layout meant that there was no place for a shower curtain, and water flowed from the shower onto the sides of the bath and then onto the floor. When I tried to run a bath, the water from the taps didn’t actually flow wholly into the bath – it hit the sides of the bath and much of it ended up on the floor. We used up all the towels to mop the floor on the first day, but our room had not been cleaned and the towels not replaced when we returned to the hotel late that afternoon.
There was a mini bar in the room, but no tea and coffee-making equipment, so you need to either drink your fill at breakfast, bring a travel kettle or use room service.
We only stayed for three nights, and did not complain or ask to switch as we didn’t want the hassle of re-packing. If we were staying for longer, I’d have probably had a word with reception, but for such a short stay we managed to take the inconvenience in good humour.
Overall, I don’t want to be too harsh. We had a great vacation and I would totally recommend this hotel, especially if you can get a good deal. But I suspect that if you get a great deal, you won’t get a great room.
Avoid room 253!

Actually, room 253 is a nice double room facing the square and, this the problem, also a side of the Hotel Majestic. This hotel was closed 5 years ago and up now we still don’t know if it will never open again as a hotel or whatever. You are right when saying that maybe the view is not the best, but unfortunately at this moment nothing can be done to solve this inconvenience. The problem of the bathtub was fixed instead. Just before your stay we provided for a brand new tub in the bathroom and it took a bit of time to understand how manage the flooding water problem occurred, for this please accept my sincerest apologies.
All my team and I wait for the great pleasure of welcoming you again in occasion of a future visit to our beautiful city!
