“Excellent choice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2009

I am a seasoned traveller and difficult to please. The Montebello got a tick from us and will go back again. As with everything the final judgement is a combination of product, service, location and price. Judged on that basis the Montebello is excellent choice.
We booked a classic room bu t the staff upgraded us to a superior upon arrival. The room was great. No particular view but unless you need to work in the room I am sure that is not an issue. Only serious issue for a hotel of this standard was I could not find glasses for drinks apart from the bathroom ones. If they were there I did not find them and then did not bother anymore.
Breakfast is great and great value too. Try it. The lobby and common areas are indeed splendid and get a big tick. Location is very good not too far from the centre and if you like walking you'll enjoy. Overall for the price, the atmosphere and the experience is very good. I would go back with no hesitation.

Only just "very good"
Good points -
Location. Tucked away - blink and you might miss the entrance - but everything you might want to see in Florence is only a few minutes walk away.
Bar - quite pricey for cocktails, but excellently prepared.

Food - didn't eat here in the evening, however breakfast was high quality and frsh. The tables in the outside courtyard are an excellent way to start the day.

Staff knowledge - All very helpful and informative. Full of local knowledge, especially for choices of good restaurants, from the very expensive Michelin types to the lino-on-the-table local eateries (which were all excellent by the way.

Rooms - adequate only. Annoyingly, despite the temperature being over 30 Celcius the air-con was not turned on. Apparantly this is the law in Italy at this time of year (we checke with other hotels!) This made the room uncomfortably hot, especially at night.
Very comfortable bed though.

Mediocre - Service could be a bit slow. It's a little annoying in supposedly good hotels to find uncleared tables in the bar which then take 20 minutes to be cleared after you have asked.

The hotel is in general kept very clean and is in quite good nick, although it may soon be in need of renovation.

I'll happily return, but only when the air-con is on!

Dear Penguin_Family_1,
I’m very pleased to read your positive review about our property and to understand that you enjoyed your stay with us.
Thank you very much for your nice comment about our staff and food and beverage services. Please apologize if for some circumstances the service was a little bit slow on that particular occasion.

Regarding your concern about Aircon/Heating, I’m very sorry and apologize you found your room extremely hot. It’s true that in Italy there is a law that regulate the use of this kind of devices according to the period. Anyway, the Montebello Splendid, since it was recently renovated, is one of the few hotels in Florence offering the opportunity to have aircon and heating together. Last April in particular we activated the aircon when the outside temperature was above 23° C for two consecutive days; I want to underline that the highest temperature registered during the day in April was 25°C and not 30°C as you mentioned. Last April was extremely cold and rainy compared to the average.

On behalf of the whole staff, I’d like to thank you again for staying with us and for posting your review on this website. We do look forward to give you a warm welcome to Florence soon.

Kind regards,

Riccardo Fracassi

I stayed in the hotel for 5 days from 23rd August with my husband and children aged 12 & 15. Right from being dropped off in the taxi from Florence airport (20 euros), the experience was wonderful. The receptionist made us feel very welcome and told us not to hesitate if we needed any information about being a tourist in Florence. She gave us a map, circling the tourist 'must do' things and was very helpful indeed.

We were shown to our rooms which were across the courtyard in an annexe wing. The two rooms were above the conference suite, so we essentially had a wing to ourselves with the 2 rooms off an inner hallway. Our double room was spacious by european city standards with excellent air conditioning, a very comfortable bed and a lovely bathroom with a jacuzzi bath/shower. The children had a HUGE twin room with a very large dressing room area and bathroom. It was really great to have our own bit of the hotel and I would highly recommend this option for families. The view was over residential buildings, but this didn't matter at all as we were going to be going out to get the views.

Breakfast was great. There was a very good selection at the buffet including a self-service orange juicer. The atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly.

Other than breakfast, we didn't eat in the hotel as we were out and about until the evenings each day, but we did sit out in the courtyard area in the evenings to play cards with drinks from the bar. Just to give you a rough guide, 2 enormous gin & tonics plus 2 soft drinks came to about 50 euros, which was a bit steep.

On the map, it looks like the hotel is a bit out of the way, but Florence is a very compact city and everything you need to do is within easy walking distance. As you come out of the hotel and turn left, the river is at the end of the road and you can walk along to the Ponte Vecchio in around 5 minutes. The train station is also in walking distance. We used the train to get to Pisa for a day trip, this cost 40 euros return for the whole family and takes around 45 minutes. A tip though... with the trains, before you get on, you have to validate your ticket in one of the yellow machines or you may get a heavy fine.

All the main tourist things, like Uffizi gallery etc are really easy to get to, so don't worry if it looks like miles and miles on the map, it really isn't.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to friends and would choose to stay there again if we were lucky enough to return to Florence.

I can't say enough about this hotel and the quality of the staff and service. We stayed during the August season and the hotel seemed not very well populated, however the service was impeccable. Brunch was an incredible value at 18 euro per person and bested some of the other brunches at other upscale establishments in Venice and Rome costing nearly twice as much. The fresh squeezed orange juice was a welcome part of our morning.

We also dined at the restaurant and had the 4 course welcome menu. Our waiter was incredibly attentive and exceeded our every expectation. Indeed, I must say the service was superior to other high end hotels we dined at Venice, namely Danieli's and Cipriani. Our waiter was wodnerful and the wine was fantastic.

The service in the hotel was remarkable. The staff were beyond happy to meet our every request and the facilities were top notch. The distance from the city centre was a bit of an inconvenience, compared to other high end establishments; but frankly, we would rather suffer the walk than stay anywhere else.

The location of the hotel is very quiet and accessible. The hotel itself is more a boutique hotel and far from the impersonal chains (however good) all over Europe. The family room is fairly cramped and with one bathroom (downstairs) for four people, gets a bit claustrophic. But the public rooms are great and the staff appear genuinely concerned in your welfare and comfort. Donato is a jewel!

I'd go back.

I'm very glad you noticed the staff commitment to help and assist our guests. I'm as well extremely glad, but not surprised, you also appreciated the service provided by Donato who was recently criticized for being rude and unattentive. I'll share with him your precious feedback and I'm sure he will appreciate.
