“A Florence "must see"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2013

This church charges an admission fee, but it is well worth it. There are works by Botticelli, Bronzino, Brunelleschi, Ghiberti, Filippino Lippi, Masaccio and many others. Plus they have recently expanded and opened the cloisters and catacomb area. Highly recommended.

“gorgeous.”

Gorgeous church. Absolutely striking. To be fair, it's one of so many places that you need to visit when you are in Florence, Italy.

“Lovely Novella”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013

This is a wonderful and spiritual place. Really lovely. It wasn't swarming with crowds and so there was time to really look at the architecture and artwork-- both of which is stunning. There is also a pharmacy (lotions, perfumes) around the corner that has been run by monks since the 1600s. Wonderful products!!

“Well worth a visit”

Some fantastic frescos and generally a much pleasanter atmosphere than S Croche. Relaxed and pleasant cloisters.

“Beautiful church, wonderful art”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2013

What a treasure this church is. Its unusual facade is even more striking when floodlight at night.
This Dominican Order church has some of the most wonderful artworks in Florence - Massaccio's Trinita, the crucifixes of Brunelleschi and Giotto, paintings and frescos by Vasari, Botticelli, Filippino Lippi etc The Spanish chapel is absolutely amazing. The cloisters with faded frescos and tombstones are tranquil and interesting.

I loved this church. The art is stupendous but seeing something like Giotto's crucifix hanging in situ in a church demonstrates so clearly what the role of art in the church was: it is thought-provoking and awe-inspiring.

If you are only going to visit one church in Florence Santa Maria Novella should be it. The structure and artworks are beautiful, but more than this, the church as a very calming and spiritual atmosphere.
