My husband and I are mid-career academics and have been to Florence a number of times. We wanted a deeper experience of the city, particularly religious art, that would bring together our experiences in Florence and our study of it. While other reviews attest that Freya can provide a great introduction to Florence, she can also enrich Florence for those who know the city quite well. She is deeply knowledgable not only in history and art history, but in the politics and personalities that created Florence--in all its layers--and she transmits this knowledge with a great sense of humor and of her audience. She manages to find that balance of giving just enough information to totally captivate you without overwhelming you. We will see much of Florence differently because of Freya. We had a full tour of Santissima Annunziata, San Marco, the Medici chapel and San Lorenzo. Freya brought to life artists like Michelangelo, Pontormo, Fra Angelico, Vasari, Donatello, Michelozzi, Lippi, not to mention the full panoply of Medicis, giving us a sense not only of art and architecture, but of what was going on when and why. When my husband expressed a particular interest in Pontormo, she found a way to show us his tomb. When I became fascinated with the process of creating "stone paintings" in San Lorenzo, she took a quick detour so we could meet traditional stone artists in Florence engaging in processes of stone cutting, gluing, matching, etc. to create seamless masterpieces, processes that were used hundreds of years ago. In addition, when asked, Freya offered helpful tips on everything from leather goods to restaurants to grocery stores!! Freya brings both her knowledge as well as her total love of Florence to her tours. Whether you are visiting Florence for the first time or are a seasoned traveller, you will find that Freya can make any part of Florence come alive for you.
