“Awesome place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 2, 2014

This place is one of the best that you can get to stay in Florence..Just next to the river and very close to all the sight seeing places in Florence..Its a very traditional, classic hotel in line with what Florence is all about.

We stayed there for a long week end. A friend that lived in Milano knew the hotel and recommended us to ask for a room on the top floor. Meanwhile I heard that the whole hotel has been renovated. Our room had a beautyful bathroom and a very nice view, perfekt for a romantic week end! The location is also very convenient, as we visited Florence by walk.

We have stayed in this hotel four times and recommend without reservation. We stayed on the lower levels the first two times. The lower level rooms were sparse but clean. We moved up to the top floor facing the river and found paradise in Florence. The top floor rooms are spacious, have wonderful views, and outside patios with a table for two. The decor is beautiful and the beds were so comfortable. The bathrooms are superior in style -- the white robes a nice touch. Room service is available and very good. We had late night snacks and wine each evening to finish our wonderful day of sightseeing and shopping. The breakfast is worth getting up for no one hurries you out the door. The staff was wonderful and by the end of our stay had our key ready before we asked. The staff ordered tickets, cars, and made reservations at wonderful restaurants -- they even watched our luggage as we ran out for one last thing right before we departed. The staff truly worked to make our stay special. Last year the hotel was being renovated so we stayed down the street. We can't wait to see the improvements early next year -- our post reflects the hotel prior to renovation.

Room Tip: Ask for a river view and stay on the top floor for not only one private patio but a shared huge pati...

We LOVED our stay at Hotel Balestri! We were greeted by friendly staff. The lobby is very dated and the elevators were small. It's worth paying the extra for the deluxe room! They are on the top floor and have been completely redone with semi-private terraces. BEAUTIFUL! The other floors seemed very dark and old looking. We received a bottle of sparkling wine and some fruit upon arrival, congratulating us on our honeymoon. The location was fabulous! Right on the Arno river just a few blocks from the Ponte Vecchio.

Room Tip: upgrade to the deluxe room!!

3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2014

When I finally got around to post I saw that the hotel is going to be closed for renovation for a while, so this may be a little late! But it has more to do with the service and attitudes of the desk staff. The hotel has a great location, very nice breakfast room and in general a very nice hotel but the staff behind the desk were not. Hopefully the staff will be different when it reopens.

We arrived at Hotel Balestri at around 12:30, we were not surprised that the rooms were not ready. Which was fairly normal for that time of day, so we went off to lunch. We had 5 rooms (9 people) for three nights. At around 3:00PM when we returned back from lunch, I was surprised to still see our luggage still in the lobby, I asked why it did not go to the room? NOW we find out they do not have a bellmen until 6PM!! Are you kidding me!! I told them what I thought and how that was the not the case in the past few time we have stayed there. The desk clerk couldn’t care less!! Things certainly have changed. The staff was not accommodating at all! So off we go lugging our luggage to our room on the 4th floor!! They did have an elevator – but of coarse it was very small and took two trips!

This attitude continued the entire time we were there! On our last night we walked in after dinner and headed for the front desk for out keys and information. We saw two ladies standing there trying to get someone to give them their key – they were ringing the desk bell. We asked them if someone was at the desk? They told us they had been waiting for a while but no one had come. I walked behind the desk and into another room yelling “hello”. Finally a woman comes out. I say to her that there are people waiting for their keys. She said that her colleague was busy and he would help us when he is done, it was not her job to do that!! I said REALLY – you couldn’t give us the keys? She was not very happy and very rude but reluctantly gave us all our keys. The ladies thanked us for our help. Her colleague finally arrives. We had questions about ordering a taxi for the 4:30AM departure (part of the group were departing for the airport) and wanted to make sure we had one booked, it would be for 5 people. We have stayed at 8 hotels so far on this trip and they always asked us to book or reserve a taxi for early departures, especially with a larger group. This gentleman would not even raise his eyes or look at us. His tone of voice was condensing saying “No, you check in the morning”. I told him that we had always booked a taxi for the early departures, but his answer was the same “No, you check in the morning”, still not looking or making eye contact with us. Any question I had, his reply was the same “ check in the morning“. Any question I asked seemed to bother him.
I finally told him he should not be working with the public as he has an attitude!! He was down right rude, obnoxious and condensing. This was terrible. Our group did get off in time but the rudeness was certainly not called for. That same morning we were also departing, but later. At around
6:30 am I called the front desk, but there was no answer. I tried at 6:45 no one answer. I let the phone ring and ring – still no answer. I called again at 7:00 and 7:15AM – NO ANSWER. Even on their web site it states “reception / concierge 24h” – really!!

What a downhill slide this hotel has experienced?
Are there new owners? What had happened to a very nice hotel? Maybe it was just the combination of the staff for those few days. Maybe they knew they would be closing and out of a job – so they had “I could care less” attitude. From the moment we walked in the staff was not friendly to any of the group and certainly not very helpful. What a shame – we loved the room on 4th floor with great views over the city. I have sent many people to Hotel Balestri over the years – no more!!

Great location. Within walking distance to major attractions. Rooms are much larger at this hotel than what we experienced at other hotels in Italy. Staff is courteous and helpful. Rooms are clean. Large buffet breakfast.

This hotel needs the renovations it is about to undertake, but the location was fantastic. The housekeeping staff kept the room clean and it was very convenient to get to major attractions.
One thing to consider on the makeover would be an English tv channel that is NOT news.

Room Tip: Ask for a river view!
