"Great location - disappointing hotel"
First impressions as we arrived were not good. This was our first experience with the unhelpful, unfriendly and lazy attitude of Italian accomodation staff supplying overpriced second rate facilities. The people at reception were unhelpful in every way. The only time his eyes lit up was when he was offering his little car parking scam, through one of his mates. 40 euro for 2 days - but there was nowhere else to park, so we had to take it. After that, he gave us a room number and made it clear they had better things to from there. We then took several trips to drag our considerable luggage for a family of 2 adults and 3 teenage girls, up a tiny lift that went half way, and then upanother two flights of stairs and then down one flight of stairs. The hotel was dark and dingy and the paintwork had not been touched in many years. Old carpets and mouldy walls. The room was bare and basic and devoid of colour or character. My wife was immediately very disappointed with her Florence experience and it was not what I wanted after 6 hours travelling by car from Venice. The bed was uncomfortable but the room was cleaned daily and the sheets changed each day.
There were no facilities for email or internet however there was a free wifi.
We took one look at the breakfast and said skip it. Bad coffee, prepackaged dry toast, ham & cheese is not what we were looking for. There were much better cafe options across the street and across the road, that were not much different in price for a proper breakfast with the Italian style we expected.
The location on the other hand is fantastic. You are within 200 Mts of the Florence railway station and bus terminal. All of the main tourist features are well within walking distance, so there is no need for taxis or buses to get around, however we took the hop on hop off bus tours which includes two routes for the price. One tour is a city route that travels around the city, and the other takes you up into the hills. Make sure you do both. Both were spectacular.
Our lasting memory of this hotel is when my wife had a fall in our room and badly bruiesd her ankle, I went down to reception to ask for some ice. I was told that it was nearly the end of his shift ad could I wait for the next person and ask him. I went straight to the kitchen myself and was given ice immediately by a kitchen hand who was very happy to help. Perhaps he should have been on reception instead. These guys have no idea what standards the world (their customers) expects in service and quality. I looked around many similar hotels on our walks but got th feeling, many of these old hotels were similar. From here on we lowered our expectations as we travelled through Italy, and preferred to be occaisionally surprized.
