The cathedral is incredible and is well worth seeing. We shelled out 10 euros to walk to the top of the dome, but the dome was so crowded, it made enjoying it virtually impossible. It was pretty impressive to see the dome's artwork up close though.
This building is huge! I've seen many castles and old buildings now, and this one was just fantastic, right up there in the top 20 across Europe in this trip. Great as the sun goes down. The inside is quite barren, but the outside is ornate.
We were here in late October. It was a 2 hr wait to get inside. Snuck in the other entrance unknowingly with a tour group. The dome inside as well as outside is the best and the only beautiful thing there is. For the paintings visit the Uffizi. Outside the duomo, it's like a street fair 24-7. Very crowded confusing and in the midst of all this, our five year old decide to chase pigeons. Couldn't get inside in the baptistry. Had younger kids so we couldn't climb the Dome. But got the view from up the Boboli gardens.
Meet there for anything you like to do! Is a good central position to start any tour. The square it self is nice, but full of tacky shops!
Just to walk around the square, and around and around is relaxing. If you had the time you could spend days looking, studying, praying and reflecting both outside and inside...
