Recently, the museum has moved many other of Michaelangelo's sculpture in the hallway leading to the David (at least, since my visit last year). This is one of the most recognized symbols of Florence and well worth seeing. There are also other things to see in the museum: magnificent examples of Early Italian Renaissance paintings, in addition to numerous other important works of art. On this visit, there was a reproduction of the David in the courtyard that was done full scale in plastic, with painted pink skin, blue eyes and yellow hair - rather shocking as it looked like the work of a vandal, but it was noteworthy (got in this review!).

I went to Florence with my mother for holiday. We both were so surprised how tall the Statue of David was. The detail of the statue was so amazing. Even if you do not like to look at Art, this is a must see.

Many people don't realize that the statue of David in Piazza della Signoria (where David was originally located) is not the real thing. It is worth the expense and the wait (at least once) to see the Michelangelo's original in the Academia. It is perfectly located under a small cupola and you're able to walk all the way around it and marvel at the genius that created it. As a former world history teacher I have to also add...do the research ahead of time so you can really appreciate what Michelangelo did.

Visited with a friend, and fortunately we were able to book via a tour group which meant avoiding the long queue and getting a guided tour once inside!

Pictures don't do this piece of art any justice! It's simply magnificent when you see David up close!

The attention to detail is unbelievable, and it just amazes the mind just how something so spectacular can be created from stone!
