“Typical Italian Market”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

I like the Mercato Central. I live here, in Florence, and I go often to the market. Certainly there are the vendirs that are more comercial and cater to tourists, but the greater part of the market remains authentic. It is here that I can find the best produce - great seasonela fruit and vegables - and the best fish and meat. Also great local muchrooms and Parmesian cheese, or Prosciuto. A good Tuscan lunch (at Nerbonbe in particular) is possible too. I have lived here a long time, but I am not from Florence, and I still find the Mercato Central the most enjoyable place to find something to eat.

“Open till 2:00 pm only so don't miss this lively food market”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

One must be thankful to the Florentines to have resisted the closing of this food market in 1990. It is a must for locals and tourists alike if you require fresh fruit, veggies, meat or fish of any sort. Prices are lower than in the 'mini-markets' that cater to tourists in the old town and in Oltrarno, no ostensible haggling, you can have sandwiches, snacks or a small lunch, there are several bakeries (try the cantuccini!), a fresh pasta stall, a Südtiroler stall (Alto Adige) selling south-Tyrolian specialities, a coffee bar (caffè normale only EUR 0.80!), and two stalls selling bio products. However, hardly any bio fruit, no bio veggies or bio eggs. There are four entrances to the market and you are sure to lose your way. It's a place worthwhile going back to if you stay for a few days in an apartment (like we do). There is a pay toilet (for those in need - EUR 0.50). All around the market are street vendors with leather goods, textiles, tourist trinkets etc., mostly now from Pakistan, North Africa and some from South America. Beware of the Gypsy kids when walking through the stall - they have very agile fingers.

“A feast for the eyes - Mercato Centrale”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

I don't think there is anything edible not available at this market. Plan to stroll through at a leisurely pace and look at the cases full of beautiful fish, every part of an animal you can imagine, beautiful fruit and vegetables, and a few nice delis where you can be spoiled by choices. What a joy it would be to live in Florence just to shop for food at this market. A food shoppers paradise. And it's a great place to buy olive oil and vinegar and pasta and dried mushrooms to take back home for souvenirs.

“Great Fun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

When you overdose on museums this is a fun place to visit. Located in a great shopping area and surrounded by good restaurants. Many places have meats on display and will slice them for a sandwich that you can make yourself. You chickens, ducks, rabitts and fish, ready to be wrapped and taken home. This is well worth a trip, just to soak up the atmosphere and food smells.

This is a must do for foodie! Lots of great cheese, wine, and oil tastings... great little lunch spot (you can't beat the price).
