A fairly large basilica with plenty of art and frescoes as is the case for Florence. What makes this one special is the tombs and tributes to the likes of Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Galileo etc. It is also not as crowded as it is slightly off the main tourist route. There is an attached leather school where you may get to see them working if you go on a weekday. Otherwise, there is a shop selling their products. Bear in mind that just because it says "school", prices here are not cheap. (700 euro and above for a leather jacket) However, you can rest assured that it was all made here. They had some nice bags but the prices were too steep for us.
P/S: Since you are in the area, I would recommend you drop by Vivoli and Gelateria dei Neri as you head back towards the Duomo. They are located very close to Santa Croce basilica.
