Toured November, 2007. Santa Croce is definitely worth a visit if you have the time in Florence. It's located a little out of the way but still within easy walking distance from the Duomo and other sites. The outside has very similar marble coloring to the Duomo (pink, green and white). When I was there, they were doing some work on the main altar so there was skaffolding up. I also found the ceiling unique. Construction on the Church was begun in 1297.
The church is fairly good size inside and has several notable tombs including those of Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei (father of modern astronomy) and Niccolo Machiavelli (founder of political thought for you political science majors). Lots of history there with those 3 alone. Has several other tombs as well. All art pieces by themselves let alone the people who are buried there.
The church also has some beautiful art and other features as well worth a look. It has an attached courtyard and museum with some beautiful Renaissance art inside. There is a cost to enter (5 euros) but you can take photos. The entry fee apparently goes toward restoration efforts. I believe there is also an additional fee you can pay to get up close to the altar they are restoring. I did not do that so can't comment further.
Definitely worth a visit in Florence.
