“Excellent on all counts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2013

Beautiful hotel, comfortable room, convenient location, delicious food, accommodating service -- who could ask for anything more?

We loved staying at this elegant hotel. Our room and all the common areas of the hotel were decorated tastefully. Our room was well sized and well appointed for a standard room and included a large, comfortable bed, a desk, desk chair, and two armchairs next to a small table. The bathroom was equally comfortable with a double sink separated from a separate room with a toilet, bidet, and large tub with a shower.

The breakfast buffet was exceptional. Along with a variety of breads, pastries, cheese, cold cuts, salmon, and fruit that are common in buffets at high-end hotels, it included extra choices that we don't often see, such as potatoes, vegetables, and a very large variety of juices. The chef manning the buffet's grill prepared eggs to order in any style and even made pancakes and French toast. We appreciated the large variety and high quality of the food and the accommodating staff who went out of their way to satisfy us.

We also had an enjoyable dinner with accommodating service in the bar. The menu included several elaborate salads, but I preferred to start my meal with a simple mixed green salad, which wasn't on the menu. When I asked the waiter if I could have one, he said, "of course," and brought me the best salad that I had during my two weeks in Italy. It was very large and had a large variety of fresh, tasty greens.

We didn't dine in Sesto, the restaurant on the top floor, but we stopped in just to look at the view. With its simple design and floor to ceiling windows, it's a perfect setting to enjoy the stunning 360-degree view of Florence.

The Westin is located in a perfect location to enjoy Florence. It's an easy walk to the train station and many popular sights, but we were never disturbed by noise from traffic or crowds during our weeklong stay. We enjoyed getting lost in the tangle of medieval streets during the day but were grateful that we could easily follow the Arno back to the Westin when we returned each night.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return someday.

Full disclosure -- The Westin was a very good value for us because we received a Starwood employee discount, but we do not stand to gain personally from this review. We are not receiving any compensation for it. We are not Westin employees, nor are our friends or family.

We stayed one night here before heading to Chianti, but wished we stayed more. We didn't have a view, but the room had high ceilings and nice drapes and automatic window coverings on a switch to make the room dark. The room was really big for Europe. We loved the layout. My only two complaints are the shower didn't get very hot and the hair dyer was terrible. If we stayed another night I would have asked for a new hair dryer. The breakfast buffet was excellent! Everything you can imagine. I got free wifi and a gold member and it worked great. Some wifi in hotels can be spotty. The rooftop bar has an amazing view! Drinks are pricey, but what you would expect at a hotel like this and worth going to see the Duomo and Ponte Vecchio lit up at night. The staff was really friendly and helpful. Overall, very enjoyable!

We stayed at the Westin Excelsior Florence at the end of March, over Easter Weekend. A very busy time to be in Florence, this hotel seemed to take it all in stride. This is a beautiful, unique property. Originally a monastery, it became a hotel a century ago. Everything about the hotel speaks of authentic, charming, Italian Palazzo elegance.

Rooms: The high-ceilinged rooms are beautifully appointed. We were a family of four, with two rooms. We booked deluxe rooms and they were lovely. However, the first rooms we were given were on the inner courtyard (really just an airshaft!). Unless you like a very quiet room, I don't recommend these rooms as they are dark. Be specific (I thought we were, but apparently not) and ask for a room on the outside of the hotel. We decided to spend more and upgrade to rooms with views of the Arno. This was an extravagance, but well worth it. What magnificent rooms! Ours was, frankly, palace sized. The ceiling was 17-20 feet high. The furnishings were splendid. We had a Juliet Balcony with a full view of the river. All I can say is, Wow.

Service: I must admit that I was upset that we paid for deluxe rooms and were offered airshaft rooms. Mind you, they were gorgeous rooms. Perhaps we were just not clear enough about our wishes. But, the management ended up being very accommodating and we negotiated a good rate to upgrade the two rooms. Well worth it. Once we received our magnificent rooms, all went smoothly. The service at the Excelsior is courtly. Formal, but not stuffy. We loved it as it speaks of a commitment to an old style of service. You won't find anyone among the hotel staff referring to you by your first name. Or, for that matter, introducing themselves by their first name. How refreshing.

Food, Drink, Restaurant: We ordered in room service for breakfast two out of three mornings. We just couldn't bear to leave that view! The third day we ate in the dining room. The food is excellent, perfectly prepared. The service professional, and again, courtly. The dining room is amazing so I do recommend you splurge on a dining room breakfast at least once during your stay -- just for the experience. We ate at the restaurant at the top of the hotel one night. We began with drinks in their famous roof top bar. Fabulous fabulous views. You MUST go up for drinks at some point during your stay. And, at 7 p.m. they serve complimentary antipasti. Beware of the locusts, though! That food disappeared within two blinks of an eye! The dinner at the restaurant was good, but perhaps the dishes a bit too adventurous. Too many flavors layered upon flavor. Great service. If we were to go to this hotel again I think that we would do the drinks but dine elsewhere.

Lastly, there is another elegant hotel across the square -- the St. Regis. We walked in the lobby and looked around. I cannot comment on it other than to say that it SEEMS what I would describe as more carefully composed -- very trendy and boutiquey. The floral decorations are for me a bit too fashion forward, the decor a little too cool for words. The lobby was obviously totally gutted, so it is lacking some historic charm. It gets amazing reviews so i am sure it is a treat the stay there. But, we are so happy to have chosen the Excelsior. It was expensive but not as much so as the St. Regis. The Westin is authentic and elegant and timeless. If we ever go back to Florence we will surely book the Excelsior.

Room Tip: Unless you crave a quiet room, ask for a room on the OUTSIDE of the hotel.

We spent 3 nights in this beautiful elegant and romantic hotel. We had a beautiful room with a large balcony and a welcome fruit basket and wine. The breakfast served has quality food and very ample. The staff are friendly and professional. Westin Excelsior kept to its impeccable standards. The location of this hotel is fantastic - it is within walking distance to city centre and train station.

We would return to this hotel again, without any hesitation.

We stayed 4 nights and it was wonderful. Walking distance to the train station and the center of Firenze. Greatest breakfast in town. Wonderful balcony to watch "Notte Bianche" performances in the piazza below.

We spent three nights here in a deluxe river view room. We had a beautiful room on the fourth floor with two full length windows and small balconies to step out onto and enjoy the river views. The whole hotel had real charm from the room décor to the public spaces and even the housekeeping service which was faultless. As well as being charming the room was also incredibly comfortable.

The location is excellent and the rooftop bar is a gorgeous place to have an apperatif and enjoy the views over the rooftops. Our only slight disappointment was the breakfast but not enough so to spoil our stay in any way. All in all a fabulous hotel. It is expensive but it is a really lovely way to experience Florence.
