We've stayed at Grand Hotel Villa Medici in August 2012. I must say, that the hotel was not expensive at all for the quality of accomodation provided.
We were welcomed with a glass of Prosecco and given complimentary upgrades for our two rooms, which was an extremely pleasant touch.
The rooms were really large, and the furniture was luxirious to say at least. I've stayed with my family, and they gave us connecting rooms - considering the upgrade, it's even nicer of them. Complimentary bowl of fruit was also very pleasant.
The Air Conditioning was really refreshing and just perfect for sizzling hot temperatures outside.
The hotel boasts a swimming pool - it was very relaxing, the water temperature is great, but the shortage of sunbeds is unacceptable for a hotel of this level. Sometimes we had to put our belongings on grass. The pool staff go out of their way to help you find a place to lounge though.
Breakfast is really great, Prosecco and the quality of fruit are simply unbeatable. I still feel like more than 30 euro for breakfast is a really steep price to pay, because we didn't have a lot of hot dishes to choose from.
There were a lot of waiters at breakfast, but they took an AWFULLY long time to clean our tables. Mostly they were standing near the entrance and chatting. Grand Hotel Villa Medici should do something about it, as the service at breakfast was 3 star at its best.
Concierge people were mostly welcoming and helpful (some of them were extraordinary!), though I feel like some of them were not trying too hard for a 5 star hotel.
One thing that really got on my nerves is the bill problem we had while checking out. We were in a hurry to catch a train to Rome, so we weren't paying much attention to the exact sums we had to pay - when we stay at LHW hotels, we don't expect to see any mistakes in the bill (and we never had any in the other countries)
Later we found out that the prices for rooms in the bill, were, in fact, higher than the prices stated in our booking confirmation. I contacted LHW customer service, and they solved the issue (we were, in fact, charged 30,80 euro extra). I don't care if this was a miscalculation or just an attempt to cheat us, but this isn't LHW level at all. Be careful when checking-out, that's all.
Grand Hotel Villa Medici customer service seems to answer the e-mails only after LHW requests them to. I was expecting a letter of apology at least, and I got one only after contacting LHW.
This whole check-out experience spoiled my very good impression of Grand Hotel Villa Medici. I won't hesitate to stay here again, but only if the price is right.
