The St. Regis Florence is really a very well run establishment. I had high expectations given all of the glowing reviews I read both on Trip Advisor as well as the SPG site (Actually, as a Platinum SPG person - I always have high expectations at Starwood properties.)
The building itself is spectacular. They really did a great job with the renovation - updating the hotel with all of the modern amenities you would expect, and at the same time maintaining the history and elegance of the building. I had stayed at the hotel when it was the Grand - and it was nice, but I usually opted for the Excelsior across the piazza as it was just a notch above. Going forward, it would be difficult to go back to the Excelsior.
The service was also top notch. It was December, so the hotel was fairly quite, but the staff provided all of the service as if it was a full house. The butler service was especially appreciated. Very attentive and willing to help with most any request. (We had asked for help in connecting our iPad with the TV for viewing videos and it took them less then 10 minutes to get us conected!) Also, we had warm drinks most mornings and evenings and the service was prompt and beverages were expertly prepared.
The room itself was very nice. As an SPG Platinum member, I used my Suite Night Upgrades to confirm a Junior Suite prior to checking in. That worked out fine although they had confirmed a suite with a separate living room, but the one we were allocated was just a larger room with a sitting area. (Not a huge issue - in the grand scheme of things - the view was terrific, but I was traveling with my nephew and it would have been nice to have had some separation.)
We took advantage of the evening Champagne ritual each night at 7:00 pm in the Winter Garden. Very nice - excellent nibbles and great bubbly! Great way to prepare for a night out. And the breakfast was excellent! They had a really amazing spread with most everything you could think of - and the service was exceptional.
The only disappointmnet I might mention was a tiny lack of coordination between reservations and the front office. I had communicated with both the reservations team (Italy) as well as with the Starwood Platinum desk with two special requests before my arrival; first to have a room with two separate beds, and second that I was celebrating a milestone birthday. Unfortunately, when I arrived - it seemed like that message was never passed on to the folks at check-in.
Overall it was a great stay. And given the level of service and quality of amenities, I would also say it was an excepional value.
As most foks have commented, request a room with a view!
