“Unbeatable Location - Ensure You Make the Right Room Choice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

For a City Break the location of the hotel is really important and you can't beat this hotel on that score. Virtually everything you want to cover in a 3 or 4 day visit is within easy walking distance. The hotel itself certainly lived up to our expectations and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Bedrooms tend to be a compromise between views and noise levels, as with many city centre hotels.
We were upgraded to a beautiful Royal Junior Suite at no charge with a great view over Piazza Strozzi. Unfortunately we found it on the noisy side at night, there was music coming from somewhere close by that went on till about 1am and the night was punctuated with the noise of groups of people passing by. In the morning the hotel very obligingly moved us with minimum fuss to a suite on the second floor which overlooked the inner courtyard and our remaining nights were blissfully quiet! From our point of view it was well worth sacrificing the view so if noise at night does bother you I would strongly recommend requesting a room facing onto to the hotels inner courtyard.
We only used the restaurant (Bibendum) on the night we arrived but wished we had used it more as it was significantly better than the other restaurants we tried - we tried their taster menu which was pretty good value at 38 euros and a very good standard. If you are looking for a hotel that is traditionally stylish and elegant (as opposed to modern-chic), with friendly service, you won't find much better particularly once you take the location into account.

Room Tip: Go for a room facing the inner courtyard if noise is an issue - it is worth sacrificing the view as...

Thank you for taking the time to tell and write about your recent stay at the Helvetia & Bristol.
We are most obliged to you for bringing to our attention any comments which would help us to build up a still better service to our Guests.
As you have been able to experience, being right in the middle of a tourist city as Florence, it may cause night noise beyond our control. We would like to take this opportunity to inform you that we have notified the local authorities and are starting a legal action.
We also wish to thank you for your comments regarding our hotel restaurant, hoping that your suggestion will encourage other guest to try it! Good quality for good value!

This hotel is absolutely stunning and in a great location. The room was big, the bathroom was very big for European standards and the hotel staff was extremely helpful and nice. I really cannot say anything bad about this hotel. Thank you for a great vacation!

2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

Having stayed here a few years ago and loved it, we decided to return to celebrate a special birthday. On the whole our stay was disappointing and not the standard we expect of a 5* hotel. We were greeted well and had champagne in our room, which was lovely. However, the room smelt overpoweringly of room spray, was only surface clean and the settee had large stains on it. The bathroom was small and the door opened inwards, knocking anyone at the sink, and the toilet directly behind it! Outside in the corridor was a cleaning trolley, which didn't seem to move all the time we were there and made it difficult to access the room. We had little sleep due to the noise from the road outside and the loud music from a club opposite. After an awful night we had high hopes for breakfast, however, the two men serving were surly and couldn't manage a smile. I asked if they had more bread rolls, as much of the food had run out at 9.00. I didn't get the rolls and we didn't see any of the remaining food being replenished. I was disappointed to feel an inconvenience as they were more interested in clearing up. After a second, even noisier night and similar experience at breakfast, I complained to reception. My complaints were listened to and sympathised with, it seemed the noise was well known about. I was asked to write this down for them to bring to the management's attention again, which I did. Next morning the breakfast table was more acceptable and I was given a bag of biscuits to bring home, obviously because I had complained. However, at no time did anyone from the management team actually apologise. I felt sad to spend time on a short break writing down complaints. Even though the main areas of the hotel are nice and we did have a good evening meal, this did not make up for the poor room and l feel the management should try sleeping in their noisy, dusty rooms.

Is it not important to pick a hotel that suits the ambience of its environment? We think it is and on this basis The Bristol is hard to beat in 'Firenze'. Perfectly situated a smart stroll from The Duomo and Ponte Vechio the hotel exudes renaissance charm and authentic Italian class. If you are looking for 21st century cleansed perfection then do not stay here but if you want the comfort of a majestic hotel staffed with charmed professionals The Bristol will help you step back in time.

This 'historical' five star hotel is a really good place, close to most attractions in Florence and definitely one of the best staff I have ever seen. They were always ready to help us in any way possible, even for our day trips to Lucca, Siena and Pisa. The breakfest is great too and the whole hotel gives this feeling of an old mansion, which goes really well with the city of Florence. The rooms are really good, very spacious and luxurious. I just didn't like the restaurant of the Hotel, service is not really good, the manager was in a bad mood and the food was trying to be way too fancy, but that doesn't make our amazing experience any worse.
