“Peaceful Tuscano Retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013

We had a wonderful 4 days at this beautiful resort. Very stylishly decorated with antiques, in comfortably sized rooms by Italian standards. Had trouble finding the location even with GPS but once there never wanted to leave. We took full advantage of the pool area, breakfast on the patio was consistently great food and lunch on the terrace was outstanding and fresh. Everything was clean and new even though the property has history dating back to the 1300's. Highly recommend, only criticism would be that service was not always consistent, half of front desk staff pleasant and efficient, half of wait staff the same way - would not keep us from returning.

Very nice hotel just outside Florence ... Free Shuttle a couple of times a day into town .. Taxi from town takes 15-20 minutes ... Beside a river and a dam .. Nice ducks on river ... Waterwheel at swimming pool .. Large swimming pool .. Restaurant on terrace overlooking river ... Dinner service could be improved ... Excellent and helpful staff at front desk .. Barman extremely pleasant ... Try for a room with view of river .. Rental cars can be delivered to hotel .. Need a GPS to find hotel .. We were very happy there and will return

Room Tip: Try and get a room with a view of river

We recently spent 3 nights at Mulino di Firenze, and we will definitely go back! The only drawback - and it really isn't a drawback - is that you either need to schedule your time in Florence city center around the free shuttle offered by the hotel, or take a cab (approx. 17E each way). But we knew this going in, and we were happy we chose this wonderful place. It is beautifully decorated: the room (we were in a junior Suite) was spacious, decorated, comfortable and all we could ask for; the grounds and common areas were a great combination of old-world antique with modern accents; the bar and restaurant were great.

The food at the restaurant was some of the best we ate in Italy. Breakfast on the outside deck was beautiful and peaceful. The pool area was great for a glass of wine and taking in the sun.

They do have a free shuttle that goes into town a few times in the morning, and return trips are in the afternoon. These times didn't work with our schedule so we opted for cabs. We actually walked into town one morning, but it is a bit of a hike so I wouldn't recommend it unless you are used to walking.

But for a place to get away - especially after a long day in Florence - this place was perfect for us.

My husband and I had the opportunity to stay at this lovely hotel this week. We found the property when we were researching our trip to Italy a few months ago. Our travel agent did not have many specific recommendations for Florence and recommended we investigate trip advisor for some ideas! I am glad we took this suggestion!
We stayed at a hotel in the centre of town for our first few nights and then relocated to this hotel for the final 5 days of our stay in Florence. It was helpful to be downtown for a few nights as we did not rent a car for our stay and that location allowed us to do a lot of sightseeing easily. After 3 days downtown, we were more than ready to leave the city limits for some R&R.
There are many great things to be said about this property, but the calmness and quietness are very high on that list! We were able to relax in a beautiful place, with wonderful and attentive staff. Several staff made our stay even that much more enjoyable-Ray (one of the waiters) and the lovely gentleman who took our order at the restaurant each night we ate there ( I am so sorry I do not remember his name!) I read a review from several days ago about concerns regarding the restaurant and the quality of food, etc. and do not share that concern in the least! We have eaten numerous meals here this week-both lunch and dinner and can only say good things about our experience-the quality of the food and the service was wonderful across the board!
The bathroom was huge and our bed very comfortable! The only minor complaint I might have would be the size of the room-small by Canadian standards, but on par from what I've seen in Europe. No worries though! I just turned one of the chairs around so that I could have another place to open a suitcase on and we were good to go:)
Few things to note-you are on the outskirts of the city, so if you don't have a car, remember this. I clocked the distance on a morning run to closest place to get water/beer and it was approx. 1.5 km. bring a backpack and it's not too bad. They do run regular shuttles daily to the city centre which is brilliant, but the latest returns at 7:30 PM. Book the AM the day before so as to ensure a spot. Also, they have free Wi-fi in the rooms, so if you look at trip advisor, etc. you can get pointed in the direction of the closest eating establishments, etc. The hotel was wonderful booking cabs for us the day before so that we just wandered out the morning of and they were there within several minutes of the time we asked. The average cab ride was approx. 20 euros to and from the city.
Wonderful stay here and would not hesitate to suggest it to others!!!

Tracey and Cory Young
PS-We booked several tours of Florence through Walkabout Florence Tours-fantastic company-can't say enough good things! If you don't have a car and book a tour, factor in a cab ride to and from the meeting place as the times do not mesh with the shuttle service. Regardless, absolutely worth the extra money!

My husband and I had the tremendous fortune of staying at the Mulino for our honeymoon last October. After twenty four hours of continuous travel, we were relieved to finally relax and enjoy this Florentine gem. Every last millimeter of the property and building have been painstakingly renovated... The restoration has captured all the charm and history of not only the Italian Renaissance; but also, the romanticism of he Tuscan countryside. Located directly on the Arno, we had wonderful sunset views and a front row seat to the beautiful rushing river.

We were also welcomed and made to feel like family by the staff... Able to chat with them in passing and partake in wonderful cuisine and filling breakfasts daily. The shuttle ran to and from the city center twice a day; and, as much as we loved Florence, we often wanted to stay at the Mulino for the day instead! You could spend an entire day roaming the property and admiring every last detail. There was also a fantastic private spa including a pristine and well maintained Turkish bath and sauna.

Pros: romantic, friendly and laid back atmosphere, wonderful architecture and rich history, five star staff, five star food, generous rooms with hardwood floors and restored features

Cons: lots of mosquitoes during the time we went, limited television options, shuttle service infrequent in October. None of these things were deal breakers by any means!

arrived at the property, 2 young kids (3 months and 2 years) in tow, exhausted after a long drive. sat down and had lunch (which was ok), and asked to check in only to be told that there was a problem with the suite which we had booked, which could not be rectified. Jaw dropped, but the staff on reception, who were extremely professional and friendly, told me they had already booked us in to villa olmi, their sister hotel, and we would be given their best room and looked after. which we were completely. So 5 stars for customer service to the guys on reception, and maybe one day we may stay at the mulino di firenze!

This is a lovely hotel approximately 4k out of Florence, however, because of the circuitous route around the one way systems on the river Arno, the taxi fare will set you back between €15 - 20 because, despite the hotel having a shuttle service, it actually only operates 3 times in the morning and the same in the afternoon from 5pm, so any eating out in the evening in the city will be accompanied by the additional fare. I wonder if the hotel want a captive audience for their restaurant which truly lets them down. The food is certainly not authentic Italian, i.e., bought in fresh pastas that they dress up with a garnish, other than than, quite basic steaks, the plainest chicken breast I have been served in years, all accompanied by a few steamed vegetables as one might find in an English canteen. The service is the evening isn't very good, partly made worse by the head waiter who is always flustered, however, the breakfasts in the morning are excellent and there is a full buffet of cold & hot fare, as well as good fresh fruits and fruit salads, breads, croissants, etc.

I found that most of the staff were delightful, however, the reception staff were somewhat dour.

Another positive note: the hotel has one of the best fresh water pools I have ever had the pleasure to swim in that is fed from the River Arno that runs alongside, all filtered through reed beds. There are plenty of good quality sun beds and umbrellas and a few hours on the terrace leaves one feeling very relaxed.

The hotel is tastefully decorated and our superior room (one of the more expensive at over €340) was spacious and well appointed, complete with jacuzzi.
