Staying for a month in Florence, we were getting tired of Tuscan food every night and decided to look for an Asian change of pace. Buddakan got good reviews on TripAdvisor so we walked to its location on the street facing Santa Croce on its north. When you enter, you walk through n small, old, formica table-filled room, remeniscent of the cheaper restaurants that can be found in Chinatowns throughout the world. However, when you are seated, you pass through the shabby part and into a nicely furnished dining area with tablecloth-covered tables. It seemed very odd to us, that they would show the public the worst part first-- you don't get a second chance to make a first impression.
They apparently offer Korean, Thai, & Chinese dishes, although we ordered Chinese. Our fried rice, chicken & corn soup, and chicken with hazelnuts were all pretty good- we'd give those dishes a B or B-. Oddly, the dishes did not come to the table together, instead dribbling over to our table one-at-a-time, with about 2 minutes between each. However, the beef with vegetables went horribly wrong! I suppose they actually used pieces of real beef in the dish, but they did something to it that turned into the consistency of small slabs of Jello that has been in the fridge for way too long. My wife spit out her first bite and I swallowed mine because the wiatress approached the table right at that moment, and I didn't want to be rude. We sent the dish back, although the first 2 staff that came to the table didn't understand any English, so they don't really know what was wrong. They did not charge us for the bad dish.
Since we were at Buddakan 2 days ago, we have spoken with a local caffe owner who told us that locals really like the place. But, she said, they specialize in Korean-style beef that is cooked tableside. With all the good restaurants in Florence, it's unlikely we'll go back.
