My daughter and I stayed at Il Grillo for 4 nights in late July/early August 2012. I cannot say enough to endorse the hospitality of the hosts and the comfort of the facilities. The crowds in Firenze cultural sites were heavy and at times trying, but it was easy to remain centered because we knew we would be returning at the end of the day to the comfort of Il Grillo.
The rooms were large and maintained in perfect cleanliness and convenience. The rooms as well as the cheerful breakfast area offered immediate access to a wonderful outside balcony with distant views. Although the bathrooms were shared, they were equally clean and the relatively few guests made it no problem to share with guests in just one other room. The air conditioning also kept the whole place entirely comfortable, despite the hot summer days during our visit.
Although the rooms and facilities are on the 4th floor, a convenient elevator made access no problem for me, though I use a cane and for balance prefer not to use stairs. Entry at the ground floor was controlled, but we were allowed to keep keys and access the place as we chose.
The breakfasts were not palatial, but provided fruits, cereals and milk as well as the usual pastries and biscuits. All with good coffee or alternatives.
Lara, our primary host was unexceptionally friendly and welcoming, and provided extremely helpful guidance regarding bus transport in the city, as well as making tour & cab contacts as needed. She took a real interest in ensuring that we had a good trip -- at departure even fixed a food packet to bring on our too-early train. And she maintains her good humor and effectiveness despite doing virtually all of the work.
The only difficulty at all involved initially finding of the building/address because the building numbers were slightly variant from the numerical order we expected. But an inquiry at a nearby bar provided easy clarification.
Getting to the place from our walking tours was easy once we understood the routes of the two buses that pass it. (Currently #22 and #57, but it would be wise to check in case routes have changed.) The bus stop was less than a block from the B&B.
Fibnally, I considered the rates quite reasonable, and certainly low for the quality of the place, which was certainly better than most hotels that would charge comparable or higher rates.
I recommend Il Grillo without qualification.
