The owner Franco could not have been more friendly and accomodating. His stories about the family and their long association with the hotel were fascinating. The room and bathroom were clean, with a wonderful view over the wooded hillside and plains below, and the supper delicious and excellent value. We were able to take full advantage of the recent arrival of Wi-Fi to the hotel, which was an added plus.

Located about 8/9 kilometres from the Etruscan town on Cortona this family run hotel/restaurant/shop is an excellent find. Run by Franco and his family for many years - Nonna runs the shop and serves panini's to passing motorists and lots of cyclists who must need refreshment after climbing those hills!
Serves good genuine authentic Tuscan cuisine and Franco has a good selection of wines to suit every pocket.
It's also a starting point to walk the old Roman roads which were both fantastic and demanding.

The Albergo Portole is a great find. It is situated in a rural position near the summit of the Apennines.
It has been in the Lunghi family for two generations and has a reputation for hospitality and excellent Tuscan home cooking.
The welcome you will receive from Franco and Mirella is second to none. The rooms are comfortable and the service excellent. There is a large dining room but you can also eat out on the terrace overlooking the Apennines.
The hotel is near to the beautiful Etruscan town of Cortona. that is a centre for art and music.
Although in a rural position, the hotel is near to the market town of Camucia that has excellent transport links to Florence, Rome, Assisi and Arezzo.
During the summer village fetes abound in the area as well as art and music festivals. The most famous of these is the Tuscan Sun Festival that attracts musicians from around the world.

We booked last minute and arrived the day after. We weren't disappointed. The drive up along the winding mountain roads had us humming songs from The Italian Job (especially This is the Self-Preservation Society - you had to be there!!!) Franco and his staff made us really welcome and the view from our room was stunning. We spent the next two days walking and were amazed at the number and different types of butterflies we saw. The most bizarre thing was the plane perched on land across from the Albergo - ask Franco about this! The food was delicious and Franco's mama's pizza was lovely. His friend produces the local wine - and is well worth tasting. Local food made by friends and family, just as it should be. In summary, we stayed three nights and were sorry to leave. Franco even found us another place to stay near San Gimignano and rang ahead to book it for us. We would definitely go back - we slept like logs and were truly relaxed at the end of our stay. Well done to all who made us so welcome.

  • Liked — Real Tuscan hospitality and beautiful surroundings
  • Disliked — The scary hairpin bends!
