“a hike in the Tuscan countryside”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012

We hiked to this beautiful spot from Cortona. Spectacular views of the valley. It was one of the highlights of our stay in gorgeous Cortona. An amazing setting! It would be an awesome site for a wedding.

“Journey back in time with . . . Saint Francis”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

While he is often referred to as Saint Francis of Assisi, Saint Francis actually spent a fair amount of time in Cortona prior to his pilgrimage to Assisi.

You can walk or drive about 5 kilometers from Cortona to the Hermitage delle Celle, a place where Saint Francis lived in 1211, and which has been called le Celle since the time he was there. You can see St Francis' small room (cave) with a stone bed and wood "pillow."

This is an absolutely beautiful place to visit and might even prove inspirational for you.

Le Celle is located at the foot of Mt Sant’Egidio. Saint Francis, along with a few of his followers, built the first nine cells of the hermitage. Before they arrived there were only a few small hermit’s cottages and peasant dwellings, along with a small chapel. It is said that these places had been built during the Longobard invasions and dedicated to the Archangel Michael.

Le Celle is worth the time to visit.

“You should go here!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

I had the fortunate opportunity to visit this peaceful place and highly recommend it to anyone. The grounds are beautiful and well worth walking around. My best experience of Frati Cappuccini happened from Cortona. It was Sunday morning, the fog was thick and I was visiting the Cortona cemetery. All of a sudden it sounded like angels singing in the clouds - it was a magical experience! The singing was from loud speakers at Cappuccini during a worship service.

“A spiritual place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2012

The setting was dramatic but because of its position several miles from Cortona it was extremely peaceful. You can wander through the public areas and take time to look at St Francis's cell as well as the little church and take a walk to an ancient bridge. There is really a feeling of sanctity and timelessness here which, after the touristy areas of Tuscany, is a welcome relief.
