“The view is fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

Nice and clean hotel with perfect view over the town. Very good value for money.

I have been here twice and will probably come back again when lovely Siciliy is the goal. Taormina is still the nicest town and location on this island. This time it was more tourists, but they come usually in the middle of the day, while you might enjoy the beach...
Buss from hotel to the beach is a good value for money. Can be recommended. Some places it was nice to snorkle also.

You will enjoy the atmosphere in the hotel. Very artistic place with soul and balcony that oversees the whole town and even Etna. Ok breakfirst. Possibility for dinner. And terrace bar with the greatest view. Situate din the heart of the city with view to the main street. Still it was quiet to sleep.

Room Tip: As high as possible. Look for the balcony terrace.

We didn't really know what to expect since the reviews have been somewhat mixed. We arrived in a magnificent reception area (on floor 4) with art all over the place. It turns out that the hotel has hosted an art school a long time ago and all kind of ceramic sculptures, paintings and decorations are all over this spectacular hotel! The older man in the reception didn't speak English but it worked out ok and we got our room. The rooms are mainly located on floors 3 and 4 (I believe) and ours was on the same floor as the reception. The reception staff behaviour was kind of mixed, one guy was fantastic and helpful and two others didn't exactly put any effort in helping...

Our room had a wonderful straight out view over the bell tower on Piazza IX Aprile and the Mediterranean sea. The view was limited sideways but that didn't bother us at all. The room was clean and of good size, a good sized bathroom as well but a narrow balcony (which was just fine anyway). The furnitures looked old and worn and the beds were very cheap looking, they were comfortable anyway but not for tall people (we were alright though)! Basically, it was a good functional room and it also had a good sized security box which can fit a laptop for example.

The Wifi didn't work in the rooms but should work in the roof terrace bar and the reception according to the staff. The Internet was very dodgy and the router was probably of the cheapest kind possible.

The restaurant and the breakfast room is located on floor 1. We didn't eat in the restaurant so I don't know how it was. The breakfast was ok and the kitchen staff very helpful. Don't miss the opportunity to go up to the breakfast terrace and sit outside overlooking all of Taormina and Etna, it's wonderful!

The hotel is a giant beast which is a bit hard to figure out how it's built! Essentially it's a U-shaped building with an old city wall cutting straight through running from the bell tower up to the mountain above. It's built in terraces sloping down towards Piazza IX Aprile. There is a backdoor you can use on the 1st floor to get out and in. Much easier than trying to use the steep stairs which is a bit to the sides of the hotel!

And last: don't miss the hotel roof bar! The drinks are very cheap and the 360° panoramic view is amazing!

Room Tip: A warning: try to get a room on the east wing or inside the "U"! The west side can be very...

I did visit this hotel in medio july 6 years ago. Sicilia was not so well known destination in Norway neither none of my friends had been there, so I was pretty excited. Travelled with my mother who got it as a present. The room was small, but nice. Balcony was near the bar below, but we really did enjoy the music in the evenings. We had good service, friendly reception, ok breakfirst and most fabulous view, it tells it all. There were some problems with aircondition, but it was quickly fixed by hotel staff.
What we or at least I remember best of hte hotel was when we did once went to roof terrace bar, that was closed, but entrance was open, and had a bottle of wine in the nighttime - looking at the sea and vulcano Etna and enjoying total calmness of stars and smells of roses... Something You really want to share with a romantic partner.
This year I will return with my partner and I am really looking forward to great Vello dOro as a good old friend. I hope we still will have the door opening two ways- one straight to a lovely stairs and the other to the main entrance. And to revisit lovely Taormina, the wonderful city of the most beautiful view, history, flirting waiters, charming shop owners, italian sicilian real people, the best food, wine and prosecco and last but not least the
fashionably posh italian design. It is like taken from the Fellini movie with a dash of Godfather ( did You ever notice the old big corpulent guy with striped dress and hat and walking stock being kissed on his ring? well i did ;-))

Room Tip: Balcony or terrace! No pool sorry.

Always stayed at the Vello D'Oro when visiting Taormina. The views are simply amazing and the location very central.
Nice breakfast buffet with croissants to die for. Rooms are spacious and clean. The decor is very interesting and artistic with sculptors and paintings all around the hotel.
Will definitely keep going back there.

I have stayed in this hotel twice. Rooms vary in size and decor, but are generally spacious. The building is full of artworks (paintings, sculptures...). Most of the staff are extremely friendly and helpful, but some of the receptionists could be sent to a customer service course. And this had not changed during the four years there was between our visits to the hotel. Waiting staff in the restaurant and breakfast are very friendly.
There is a safety deposit box in the rooms (€1.50/day) and the hotel has also a limited number of fridges to the rooms (€5/day). If you cannot get one, there is also a small fridge in the reception where you can keep your stuff.
Both the rooms and general areas are spotless. However, you might meet some small lizards every now and then, but the staff just greeted them as their mascots :) .
Be aware that soundproofing is not of the highest standards in this property. Especially the music from the bars located right beneath the hotel on the stairs leading to Corso Umberto can be heard very clearly in the rooms until midnight/1 am when the music ends (at least in the rooms facing the sea).
There is a centrally controlled aircondition in the hotel, however, it can be turned off individually in the rooms. The airconditioning equipment in the rooms are ageing and make irritating flapping sound during the night.
Breakfast is a simple continental type breakfast buffet with breadrolls, ham, salami, cheese, cereals, youghurt, jams/marmalades and sweet croissants + juice, water, coffee and tea. The halfboard dinner included daily 3 options for starters and 2 main course options. You'll have to decide your dinner selection by noon.
The hotel has a wonderful roof top terrace where there is also wifi coverage (you can get the access code from the bar, but only when it is open (3 p.m. - midnight). There is no wifi network coverage elsewhere.
All in all would not hesitate to stay here again!

Room Tip: There are different types of rooms: without a balcony; with a balcony and with balcony and sea view...

Simple but clean rooms.
The location is perfect: near the main street Corso Umberto, and with a big roof terrace with great views over Mount Etna, the Ionian Sea and the old Teatro Greco.
Overall, staff was friendly and willing to help. However, communicating in English was somewhat difficult.

Centrally located in the middle of town, with a superb view over the sea, mount Etna and the Greek theater, but very noisy in the evenings due to live music from various surrounding bars (once until after 3:00 in the morning). You will also acoustically "participate" in the toilet "visitations" of all adjacent hotel rooms, and will be woke up by room service preparations in the morning. The breakfast buffet was ok, but it will be closed immediately at 10:00 am; even if guests are still taking food, everything will be immediately removed. We would have been charged to change to a room with better view (20 Euro per day!), so that we stayed in our initial room, which was ok and fairly clean, if you did not look too close. We had to pay additional 50 Euro to park our car in a public parking space - the parking places at the hotel, which were offered online, were simply not available. Taormina is definitely not the place to go, if you are looking for a quiet time - it is totally touristic and noisy. If we ever should be back in Sicily, we will not stay in Taormina again, but chose a place outside the touristic centers along th coast and travel around by car.
