“Beautiful Cliffside hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

We thought this was a charming hotel with ambiance that you don't find in a new hotel. Note about finding it: we were using our GPS to make our way around this cliffside city, and it said we "had arrived" but we saw no sign for the hotel. Turns out Garmin doesn't know up and down! The hotel was below us at the time around a few more curves in the road. We had spectacular views from our room. Mt Etna was erupting, and after sunset we could see the orange glow of the lava coming down the side of the mountain! The 15 minute hike into town was pleasant, and the hotel's recommendation for dinner was close by and one of most economic meals of the trip. The next morning they had no problem with us leaving our car parked on their limited space while we went to visit the splendid Greco-Roman theatre. Even after we checked out, they did not mind us using their computer in the lounge to check on our airplane departure the next day.

Room Tip: We booked early and got a corner suite with views of both the sea and Mt Etna

I think most reviewers did an ample job of describing the pros and cons of this hotel. We stayed here one night, based on a recommendation from a friend, who actually said we should come for the views but should expect a somewhat rundown room. The comment about the views was well placed. We had a lovely weather during our stay (early April), and the views of the sea, brom the balcony next to the room, were magnificent. To see the view towards Etna, which was majestic with the cap of snow still on it, you need to walk around or get a more expensive room. Our room was below the dining room, so it meant carrying the suitcase down (and up) quite a number of stairs, though help was offered. The room turned out to be quite OK, so this was a nice surprise. We actually got wifi in the room, probably because we were very close to the dining room. Breakfast was OK, with the possibility of sitting outside in the veranda. Walking to town was no problem at all. We were in Taormina the day before Good Friday, so one could hear choirs practicing in the churches, which was really pleasant.

Simply Amazing! The moment our family arrived, Carlo treated us as if we were his own family! Our room was beautiful and the the views of the ocean and Mt. Etna were breathtaking. It was picturesque! The gardens on the property were beautiful and we enjoyed stolling around smelling the citrus and floral scents. The breakfast every morning had a wide selection of delicious breakfast items enough to keep us going throughout the day and the caffee lattes were tasty! The staff was warm, friendly, and professional. They were all so attentive making us feel as if we were the only guests! We miss and fell in love with Taormina and look forward to returning. We will definately stay at the Hotel Bel Soggiorno again! Thank you Carlo and staff for a memorable and beautiful experience in Taormina!

We wanted a typical Italian hotel for our mini break in Sicily. This hotel fits the bill quite nicely. It is situated just outside of the centre of Taormina, which is the case with almost all villas and hotels. Thus, be prepare to walk 15 mins or so to get to the centre of Taormina with shops and restaurants. This is not a place for people with problems walking.
The hotel offers only breakfast. Lunch, dinner and snacks are not available. Depending on what time of year you are there, it might be difficult finding a restaurant that is open for lunch or early dinner. Breakfast is OK and served in a very nice big room with an adjoining terrace. Various types of bread, cheese, ham, muesli, cakes, juices and coffee/tea are offered. Wifi is available free of charge, but only in the breakfast room.
Our room was quite large and clean, with a nice balcony with a view of the ocean. The walls were very thin and nothing was insulated, so be prepared to hear people coming and going. These properties are built for hot weather. We visited in March, and although the temperature reached +17 C outside, the room was very cold during afternoons and evenings and we had to sleep with our clothes on and two blankets. The water pressure in the shower was weak and the hot water was only lukewarm, which made it very difficult to wash one's hair for instance.
The last night there was a tremendous storm with heavy rain, wind, thunder and lightning. We woke up the following morning to discover the whole room was flooded with water that had seeped in through the windows. Be careful not to leave clothes or shoes on the floor.
Staff are very friendly and helpful, and will even assist with parking your car, which might come in handy as the the final stretch of road leading to the hotel is very narrow and winding.
The big downside was that when we checked out, we were informed that we needed to pay the city tax in cash only. After having asked the previous day if all expenses could be paid with credit card, we didn't have enough cash left for the tax. Thus, one of us had to run into the city and withdraw cash from the ATM and then run back. This caused a very unnecessary delay in our departure and frustration on our part that could easily have been avoided with clearer information up front.

If this hotel was a person you would say it's charms excuse it's foibles. Yes the continental breakfast is only average and uses tinned fruit, and yes sometimes the air con can get a tad noisy and the mid week dinner they serve is only mediocre. And yet..... the room we stayed in was clean and spacious, the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, and the sea views were to die for. For a relaxed and totally laid back holiday this elegant and charming hotel can't be beaten.

We had a lovely week at the Bel Soggiorno. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and made us most welcome. The situation is wonderful (providing you don't mind the steps) with fantastic views over the Med and Mount Etna. The rooms are simple, ours had a large, shared, terrace and all was very clean. The Hotel has real character, built in 1908, and the reception room and terrace reflect its heritage. Thoroughly recommend the hotel. Excellent value.

Room Tip: Rooms need to be facing the sea with a terrace

Firstly the great things about this hotel. The views from the balcony rooms and the breakfast room are just stunning; when the sun is out and you can see the sea and the top of Mount Etna there's a great temptation not to move all day. The staff, from the owner, through the waiting staff to the cleaning ladies are lovely people - just very friendly and helpful. And the breakfast room and adjoining lounge/bar, with hints of period/art deco style, are a joy. Breakfast itself is a comprehensive continental affair, with, for example, eight different fruit juices on offer. My only criticisms are that we would have liked more fresh fruit and the coffee was not the best I've tasted.

However, if you are looking to stay here, there are some things you should consider which might affect your decision. The hotel itself is some way below the town of Taormina itself and to get there on foot you have to walk up a flight of steps and then into town - about 15 minutes for us (an active 60+ couple). And as the hotel only does breakfast (apart from a weekly dinner and music night - good fun from the owner and one of the waiters!) you can be up and down them at least twice daily to get into Taormina to eat or to catch local buses etc. The hotel itself has no lift so it's stairs again if you happen to be on a different floor than reception.

There are different types of 'balcony' rooms - those with small individual balconies, and then those, like the one we stayed in, which are on a 'communal' balcony where you have either to walk past others to get to your room, or other guests are walking past you. It didn't bother us at all and it helped us to socialise with other guests which added to our holiday enjoyment, but not everyone would want this. I would suggest asking for a specific type of balcony room depending on what you want from your holiday.

Our room was fine - not enormous but certainly more than adequate size. Clean, quiet and air-conditioned; two minor negatives - we found the beds very firm (seems to be standard on the continent) and the shower cubicle was quite small, although very efficient. But the room did overlook the sea and Mount Etna so all was forgiven!

Taormina itself is lovely. The main Corso, lined with shops, bars and cafes, widened out to delightful small squares with plenty of good restaurants, and the higher you went the better the views. If you don't want to walk right into Taormina on a evening to eat, we found the Al Giordano restaurant just opposite the (again, lovely) public park to be very good. You still have to walk up those steps from the hotel, though!

Yes, we loved staying at Bel Soggiorno. If you're reasonably fit and don't mind the daily walk up the steps then it's thoroughly recommended. If not, you'd probably be better closer to the town itself where you might be able to walk in on the flat. Just make sure you get a room with a view!

Room Tip: Go for a sea view room and decide on what type of balcony you want - individual or 'communal'...
