“A beautiful gem, with views to match”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 weeks ago

We got a studio apartment on the second floor for 3 nights. Having been to Positano a couple of months earlier we wanted to explore Taormina and found this via Tripadvisor and Expedia. Initially my wife was a bit put off by the recent review by "weltravelledofSussex" but I insisted we try it out as the majority of reviews were very positive. We were not disappointed and it is clear that one review is biased and not factual:
- stunning views of the sea and Mt Etna
- excellent service by all staff including Maria and Joshua who helped with every request and advice for tourists. Cristian was helpful by phone and email.
- the studio itself is top quality, and any negative comments are uncharitable. I like a new fresh look, and this was it. Fairly new, spotless, spacious split level, and thoughtfully designed.
- housekeeping is again 5 star quality
- great location, near the town center and attractions. The walk is through a pleasant quaint area and many choices for meals.
- It was a treat to wake up every morning to the view and enjoy the same at night. We like to enjoy the room wherever we stay and in the odd occasion when the weather was a bit off we enjoyed the apartment.
- a well appointed kitchenette with all the required crockery and cutlery helped though we only made breakfast one day.
- and some thoughtful touches - welcome sweets from the region, and a rose for my wife on Valentines day!

I cant think of anything that they need to improve except two suggestions: firmer pillows please, and dont change linen every day unless guests ask for it - I would like to promote green living.
The shower and bath is great quality but if possible the location of the shower should not be on the side wall as it is now. But this is not a major issue - just a suggestion.

Be aware (as previous reviews have mentioned) that the hotel is closed during off season (till March) so you only have access to the studio apartments which are self contained. Not an issue for us. This is a town for walking so be prepared for this and you will enjoy a charming town, we certainly loved it.

We will be back as this was a visit and a stay to remember.

Some suggestions on things to do: breakfast, coffee and croissant at Bam Bar, lunch with an awesome view at Granduca, Great pizzas at Mt Etna Pizzeria, quick takeaway or sit down Pizzas at Cristina.

Things to visit or see - walk up the path on Casteltoarmina to the church at the top - great views if you are fit. Dont miss the Teatro Greco, just stunning. The botanical gardens, the beach and Isola Bella. In summer do Mt Etna for sure (we couldnt due to the weather but will be back)

Room Tip: In the studio apartments, the higher the better. They all have the same view and you will love it!

Dear Sir or Madam,

Just a brief word from Hotel Villa Belvedere to thank you kindly for the pleasant surprise engendered by your recent, much appreciated review which puts into a very different light a certain negative and as you say, biased, review, from "weltravelledofSussex", - doubtlessly written for obscure personal reasons and meant to harm. Truly a case of “Truth will prevail”.

Thank you again. I feel that matters have now been set right.

Please rest assured moreover that your constructive criticism concerning ‘green living’ is willingly accepted. We agree with you. We do abide by this creed in many other ways and will try to find a solution for the linen question. Alternative, firmer pillows provided for those who prefer them is not an impossible idea to put into action and we will act on it.

Kindest regards,

Cristian Pècaut.

Beautifully designed modern suite on 8th floor, like an glass aerie in the sky-- with same view as from the renowned Greek Theatre. Convenient to Town, never used our car. Helpful staff with great English skills-- and good recommendations for restaurants.

we spent 3 nights at this lovely hotel with great views of the sea and Mt. Etna. The main hotel was closed and undergoing renovation. We were placed in a beautiful top floor apartment with a large balcony, comfortable bed with quality accessories. The owners were most gracious, helping us carry our bags down the street to the apartment. Since most restaurants are closed in January, and because my wife has a bad back, the owner offered to pick us up in the evening and drive us to his favorite eating place. The hotel is on a one-way street and maneuvering about by rental car not advised. In high season, this would be an ideal location. Would love to go back again.

We were blown away by this hotel. Despite the main building being closed in the off season, the apartments down the road are amazing. Stunning views of the entire town, ocean and Mt Etna, great balcony, modern decor. It's 5 mins from the beautiful town of Taormina. The rooms are a great size, the showers aren't huge and the pillows weren't comfortable, but everything else was perfect.

This is a wonderful hotel and viewed from the road can be a bit misleading as it is built partly into the side of the hill. It is a much more substantial building than first meets the eye.
As with most of Taormina it is in an elevated position with many rooms offering terrific sea views.
It is just a short walk of 5-10 minutes from the centre of the town with its' excellent choice of restaurants and some quite upmarket shops.
Although from a map Taormina appears to be on the coast it is quite a distance from the sea because it is built on top of a hill. The best way down to the sea is by cable car for 3 euros.
Staff at the hotel were friendly, breakfast was good in the Italian way but don't expect the 'full english'. There is no restaurant for evening dining but given the options locally this should not be a problem.
Wifi is good, parking limited, but using a car around the streets of Taormina can be challenging.

Room Tip: Choose a sea view room with balcony.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2015

We spent three nights here in the low season, when the hotel itself was shut,so there was no breakfast service available. We stayed in the so-called suites, a hundred yards down the road. The room itself was quite nice, a split level single space with a large comfortable bed and then a sitting area, giving onto a small balcony with spectacular views of Mount Etna and the sea. The bed was large and comfortable. The room was rather starkly decorated with a somewhat sterile atmosphere, and the bathroom cramped. It was more like an apartment-hotel than a suite. There were some nice touches, like a gift of pannetone when we arrived, and one of those wonderful Italian coffee pots for brewing coffee on the hob in the room - but then there was no coffee or milk provided, a slightly parsimonious approach. Similarly, bottled water was left for us and renewed each day, and then the owner attempted to charge us 2 euros per (small) bottle when we checked out, despite there being no suggestion they were chargeable. The walls are paper thin and we were disturbed late at night, in the early morning and during the daytime by a noisy family next door. Parking is sorted out for you in the hotel's car park or one of their reserved spaces on the street. They charge a stiff 15 euros per day for this, and there is absolutely no way of avoiding it, as the whole town is a resident-only parking area - so again, one felt that the hotel was less than generous. This practice of charging exorbitant fees for unavoidable parking seems standard now in Italy, and is not something to be welcomed. Some small gestures towards customer care would go a long way to improving the experience of staying here. The apartments and the hotel itself are a 15 minute walk from the central street in Taormina, and the walk is dull and mainly on a very narrow pavement - it does get wearing after a while. Overall, there are many good options for staying in Taormina, and this is not one I would recommend, although the main hotel may be a better option.

Dear Madam,

With reference to the review you published today on Trip Advisor – after having previously threatened to do so and to “take up with your credit card company” the difference of €9,50 (less than £7.50) you were charged, having previously been advised and accepted the amount for p&p as the actual stamps used to return the items you forgot at the apartment, amounted to €5,50. Clearly the amount required included time taken for packaging and a member of staff’s taking the parcel to the local Post Office and waiting in the usual queue. Often, indeed usually, however we return forgotten items at no charge to the guest.

When you asked us to return your forgotten items and accepted the charge of €15 for p&p, your email read – quote:

”Dear villa belvedere.
I left your hotel this morning after stayng in one of your lovely apartments. Unfortunately, I have left my iPhone charger and plug in the apartment. Would you be able to send it back to the UK for me, please.? I will of course pay the postage costs if you let me know what they are.
My address is -----------etc.I am very sorry for any inconvenience.
Mrs S-----“

…..followed …..followed on receipt of your parcel by the reply to our email justifying p&p at €15 euros – quote:by – quote:

“I am staggered. The post office is 1/2 mile from villa belvedere ( I looked it up on google maps), hardly a long distance. You sent the Chargers in a Jiffy bag not expensive and easy to seal. I may not live in Italy but in all the times I've visited Italy I've never spent 1 and a half hours queuing to buy stamps or send a parcel. I think your charge is excessive and I will take it up with my credit card company. I shall certainly be reviewing you on Trip Adviser too”.

Therefore it would appear that all the exaggerations in your review were caused by the overall charge, albeit accepted beforehand by you in writing, for returning your mislaid property?

At this point however, we defend ourselves by contradicting the deceptive statements in your review.

Our de-lux, Studio–Apartments, (or “so-called suites” as you call them), are separate from the hotel. They are spacious and the shower/bathrooms are most decidedly not cramped. There is a modern, very functional kitchen area which is always supplied with instant coffee, tea, sugar and fresh milk as well as several other complimentary useful food items, (normally also including Moka espresso coffee but this item only was in fact unavailable during your stay) especially when the hotel is not open.

Bottled water which you used daily but categorically refused to pay for, is normally chargeable in most establishments and in fact the receptionist explained on your arrival that while coffee, tea, etc were complimentary, bottled water cost €2 per bottle..

The sea views are, as you state, stunning and they sweep round to include mighty Mount Etna, from the safe distance of Taormina and the décor is modern, with simple elegance. Decidedly not describable as either ‘stark’, or ‘sterile’

No next-door, noisy family exists, both because all walls are outside walls and moreover all walls are totally sound-proofed – to airport standard! Each apartment occupies an entire floor of a small, private, ultra-modernised, free-standing building. “Paper thin walls” is therefore patently a mendacious description !

To take fifteen minutes to reach the Corso, the main street in Taormina would entail stopping every few seconds en route. It takes most people eight minutes at the most and the town centre can also be reached by way of the delightful public botanic gardens, not only by the roadway.

Kindest regards

Cristian Pècaut.

I'm back from spending 5 nights at this hotel and what a great place to stay it is!

Out of season and the main hotel was closed for updating - which reflects the single-minded focus on quality here - and instead we stayed in a studio in an annex less than 100m away. Third floor, stunning sea views and over neighbouring towns and villages with a brooding Mount Etna in the background.

The room was marvellous, comfortable, modern design with a sitting area, balcony and kitchen facilities. It was great to go and stock the fridge with our favourite drinks and it would be quite possible to do breakfast or a light supper if - hard to imagine - the amazing choice of local restaurants did not have something to offer. An ideal place to stay if you want to do your own thing.

One real advantage too was the free of charge, rock-solid Wi-Fi available in the room

I've no doubt at all that the main hotel would be an excellent place to stay as well.

Thoroughly recommended.
