“Comfortable modern hotel right in the heart of town.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2011

The steep drive has been done to death – we (fairly fit late fifties) found it okay. It’s actually the top part of a path that goes all the way down to the coast. Our taxi dropped us at the top and the driver must have rung the bell since the porter arrived in the blink of an eye and took our bags to the room.
We booked a superior room but in many ways that is the normal room since there are very few standard rooms or suites. The room was on the small side and we found the bed and pillows a bit on the hard side (I’ve got to start bringing my own pillow with me!). The balcony had two wooden chairs (non-reclining) and a table.
Breakfasts were wonderful – fresh fruit and the facility to squeeze your own orange juice; cold cuts, smoked salmon, cheese etc etc and bacon and eggs cooked to order. Good quality coffee dispensed by an espresso machine. Mineral water and prosecco. Very helpful and attentive waiting staff. Lovely view from the restaurant.
The pool man is a legend and, if like us you want shade, as soon as you leave your bed he moves it so that it stays out of the sun. Good size pool and comfortable beds and a good pool-side restaurant.
On the negative side: (1) they still have the stupid rules about no food, drinks or irons in the rooms although I didn’t see anyone carrying water being wrestled to the floor as was the suggestion in reviews of several months back. I suspect the rules are to protect their mini bar, restaurant and ironing service. (2) Our balcony (room ending in 09) was slightly set back from the others and had a concrete scallop shell thingy which greatly restricted our view. In general rooms ending in 11 or less are to the left of the lift tower and will probably have a more restricted view. Rooms ending in 9 – 11 are likely to be set back or have the scallop shell. Best views are probably from rooms ending in 01-08.
All in all no hesitation in recommending the Monte Tauro.

Room Tip: request a room number ending in 08 or lower

We loved every thing about Monte Tauro hotel including location, food , accomodation and the very helpfull friendly staff. We're already planning next year. One of the most significant things we noticed was the number of guests who were on their second or third visit. Roll on 2012!!! Denis

This hotel is beautifully located just on the side of the Mount Tauro overlooking the fabulous bay and Mount Etna. For those who don't know, Taormina itself sits high above the sea but you can get a cable car or bus down to the beaches below. There are some hotels at sea level and if you want a beachside holiday that's where you'd want to be, but this hotel is in the perfect place to enjoy Taormina itself. Restaurants, bars and shops are just a very short hop away. The town is busy, no doubt about that, especially in the evenings, but the hotel itself retains a peaceful atmosphere, whilst being handy for everything. You are within walking distance of the fantastic Greek Theatre and the other historic churches and sites of Taormina. Right next to the hotel are the peaceful and shady public gardens, perfect for an evening stroll, with fab views over the bay.

There are a couple of quieter little restaurants and bars within spitting distance of the hotel which we actually found more peaceful and friendly than the ones in the main town but everything is so close you will be spoilt for choice. There's a little mini mart which is a bit more expensive than the supermarket but very friendly. It sells beer, wine and snacks.

The bus terminus is about a 15 minute steady walk away. You will have to meet here if you join an excursion. The cable car station is further along the same road.

Hotel Monte Tauro is modern and people who prefer a cosier or more traditional feel might find that unappealing. It is clean, well maintained and nicely designed though. Our room was large and the bed was very comfortable. We slept soundly every night, with no noise distrurbances. There's plenty of wardrobe and storage space. Every room has a sea view and the hotel is terraced into the hillside. The balconies are relatively private and furnished with table and chairs. Not all rooms have loungers though and we found the chairs heavy to move around. The views from the balconies are stunning! We got the whole sweep of the bay and a wooded hill to the side.

The towel situation was a little odd. Two large towels were supplied in the room, plus a floor towel. On some days we got a small square face flannel, but not every day. The other "towels" were four very thin pieces of material, more like tablecloths or napkins. They are useful for absolutely nothing as they have no absorbancy. You could really do with more normal (ie terry cloth) towels as in the heat and with swimming and so forth, one tends to want to shower and wash hair more often than usual. I asked for extra towels and was told it wasn't possible. You also only get soap, shampoo and bath foam in the room - no conditioner or shower gel. I always take my own stuff but I know some people do rely on the stuff the hotel supplies.

Breakfast was great and served up until a very sociable 11am, so you don't have to get up and rush if you don't want to. There's a selection of breads and pastries, local cheeses and meats, cereals, eggs and beautiful local fruit. They also serve sparkling wine and fresh orange juice. The only problem with the juice is operating the tricky juicer without spraying yourself in the process. A few of my white T shirts now have permanent orange spots.

The hotel is sort of upside down - the reception, bar and restaurant is at the top and the rooms are below, with the pool area at the lowest level on a terrace, overlooking the sea. The bar was always quiet, but I think that's because people tend to go into town in the evenings. A scenic lift takes you up and down. Some people thought it was slow as it gets too busy, but to be honest, we found it ok. It was used a lot by staff moving stuff around (mattresses, trollies etc) and services, even though there was a service lift. Perhaps if the service lift was used more it'd free up the lift a bit.

The pool is nice. It's big enough to swim even when busy. The pool attendents are superstars and will get you the spot you want - sunny or shady. There can be a shortage of loungers and this seemed to be due to people leaving their stuff behind while they go off and do other things, selfishly reserving their loungers for the whole day. But the attendents are onto this and watch what's going on, so if they see a set of loungers unattended for over an hour they will move the stuff if someone else needs them. Too right!

Staff were generally friendly and helpful and the housekeeping service was excellent. We had a very good stay here. I suppose the biggest drawback is the hill outside the hotel. It's not the longest hill in the world but oh boy...it's steep!! You cannot escape this hill. It will be there every time you want to leave the hotel. The only way is up! In the August heat it was a challenge, even for the relatively fit. To be fair, a lot of the hotels have probably got slopes and as Taormina itself is built into the hill, there are slopes and steps all over town so it's all an inevitable part of staying in Taormina.

In summary, the standard, location and views make this a great choice.

Room Tip: Ask for a high room.

We stayed at the Monte Tauro for one week from 14 Aug until the 21 Aug and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The hotel is built into the hillside with reception at the top on the eighth floor and access to all floors is by a scenic lift.
The staff at reception were, without exception, helpful, friendly and prompt in dealing with all clients. We did have a two-hour wait but when we had it, our air-conditioned room was very nice with everything you would expect in a modern hotel and the maids kept it spotlessly clean during our stay. Each room had a spacious circular balcony providing superb views of the bay and all the beaches below.
Breakfast was a self-service buffet on the seventh floor with a wide range of cold and hot food available from smoked salmon and champagne to eggs and bacon, which was cooked to order.
We didn't take lunch or dinner in the hotel because we decided to eat out at the numerous local restaurants so we can't comment on the quality of the food in the hotel but the restaurant seemed quite busy every night.
The pool area on the ground floor became very busy in the middle of the afternoon but nevertheless the excellent pool attendants tried hard to accommodate everyone's needs.
There was a fairly steep walk up 37 steps from reception to the road. Not a problem for the majority but something to bear in mind if there are issues with mobility.
We were delighted with the hotel and wished we had booked it for two weeks instead of one. I would certainly recommend the Monte Tauro to anyone.

Room Tip: Try and book a high floor. Great views and closer to reception and the restaurant

We loved our 7 night stay in Hotel Monte Tauro. it's a quiet place but actually in the town and a 10 minute walk to the cable car to the beach at Mazarro Bay. Very helpful staff, well equipped bedrooms, lovely pool area and excellent breakfast selection. Only word of caution is the steep incline down to the hotel but you can request transport if necessary. We will definitely return to Monte Tauro!!

We stayed for a week and found this to be a lovely hotel. Good location, splendid views and the staff were all extremely helpful and friendly. We only ate in the restaurant one evening. The meal was very good but with such a wide choice of restaurants in Taormina it's a wasted opportunity if you eat only in the hotel.

Complaints? Only a very minor one and that's that there's only one guest's lift which can mean a long wait at times, particularly around checkout time. There are the stairs of course, but there's an awful lot of them!
